I Renown I
I'm not much of a network guy here, so, I'm hoping someone here is...

My internet connection is wireless and all connections communicate through a Gateway and I'm looking to connect my 360 to Live, or at least have the option of connecting on a 24/7 basis, as in I could connect anytime I want without me having to disable the phone (crossing both the internet and phone lines effectively disabling the phone signal and having no calls getting through), and I'm wondering if I could purchase a router or something that could connect to the gateway from my room upstairs (the main connection is downstairs) using wireless connectivity - the only wire I'm looking to use is the RJ-45 for the 360.

Help is appreciated as always.

When you say that your internet connection is wireless, so you mean Muni-Fi?

No. I should have explained it better, there's wireless connectivity but the internet connection itself is very much wired. I'm using Verizon and I'm not 100% sure whether or not their service is municipal or not. My PC is connecting through a wireless USB adapter and the one downstairs is hard-wired to the Gateway, and I don't really feel like purchasing a 50 or 100ft ethernet cable that will trail all over the floor and the steps, and I'm not buying that glorified and overpriced adapter that Microsoft sells.

Your best option is Homeplug. It uses the electrical ring main in your house to send the network signal around it. It's cheap, fast (up to 200mbs) and you simply place one plug next to your router and then connect with a network cable. This then sends the signal throughout the ring main. You then plug another homeplug upstairs next to your 360 and run a network cable from the plug to your 360.

I've ordered a pair (one to go next to router and one for my 360) for £35 from the BT shop.

In theory you can use as many as you want all over the house. Bear in mind that you may lose some performance when plugging them into an extension lead, but nothing you'll notice if you only using it for gaming and surfing. You should also avoid plugging them into surge protected extension leads as the filters can interrupt the signal.

Anything more within my home field? :p

Better yet, is there anything similar to that (or exactly that) here in the States?

I think that would be better than using the electrical wiring of your house. My networking teachers won't even talk about electrical networking because its not entirely proven to be effective over the long term from what they tell me.

Well the homeplug technology is very good from the reviews that I have read. People are using it for streaming HD video content between computers and it works very well. You also don't have the problem of security unless your ring main is shared within the building (very unlikely). If your also into gaming having a wireless connection can be problematic.

What did your teacher tell you about electrical networking? I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be "effective in the long term".

He said it tends to be very dependent on the area's electrical grid's stability (whatever that means lol)

But yea I think it could be useful. I shouldn't say someone should not use (yes I know its a double negative) to use it because I've not used it.

But I use my PC as a gaming computer and its wireless two stories about my router and it usually has 40-60ms pings on most servers.
