Yeah, posting a thread with this kind of title and not explaining what happened is kinda rude.

Yer I would explain what happened but I dont know exactly. I'll start from the beginning.

About 30 minutes after instalation of the 2.02 update GT5 froze, I tried to quite the game but it didn't work, so I just turned it all off. Turned it on again & no games would load, look in my saved data & had a corrupt file (dont know what from) since then i've been going through files trying to figure out what happened. Then I noticed in Game Data Utility that the 2.02 file was corrupt. It seems to have done something & corrupt a few other files.

I see what you mean.

But it's really strange that it messed up non GT related files.

You should never turn your PS3 off using the power switch, you are supposed to eject the disc and then insert it again, if that doesn't work then you use the power button, that should work in pretty much all instances. Then booth the PS3 back up and it should tell you that it was shut down improperly and will proceed to do a file restore and then reboot and you should be on your way. PS3 is just like a PC, it has a shut down sequence that you should follow, always shut down through the software and not the hardware power off.

^ This.

Hopefully if you uninstall the GT5 game data, and download everything again (I know, it'll take forever and day) it'll install itself properly, usually that's the reason why those files show up corrupt, and your other games will work too.

It sounds like it was not finished installing when you shut the power off. It is also possible that the download got corrupted somehow, but I would think that there would be a file check in place to verify the integrity of the downloaded file before it tried to install it.

I do hope you get it sorted.

However, if V2.02 was ruining HDDs, this forum, Sony's forum, and PD's forum, would be flooded with at least a million complaints by now. ;)

^This is a good idea to try. Hopefully, just deleting the GT Data folder and re-installing will fix it.

I know O_o

Also does anyone know how I can back up my BF3 data? I'm gonna wipe my hard drive but cant put BF3 onto a USB?

Oh no it downloaded & installed, I was sorting out my cars when it froze.

You typed a bunch of messages while I was so i edited and took back my reply.

sucks to hear about the BF3 save data

Misleading thread title, isn't it?

EDIT: Nice, you edited it! 👍

I would try that but there's still corrupt data on the hard drive I cant access & the only way of deleting them (from what I know) is to wipe my hard drive clean.

Here's hoping that corrupt data in your save file wasn't anything important. :indiff: Like your GT5 save, unless you're ok with starting over. Did you have a backup of your stuff on an external HDD? That's always a good idea, matter of fact I have to update my backup since I installed a couple games recently.

Yer I have a GT5 save on my USB from a few days ago :)

A bit more detail?

You can put the PS3 into SAFE MODE & there is an option to recover corrupt data BUT it cant fix it & I dont know how to delete it?

The rebuild database one?
There's a second one: restore file system

I've no idea what exactly it does, because I've never used it. But I think you won't lose your savegames with it. Google it first!

The restore file one trys to fix any corrupt data.
The rebuild database Deletes messages, playlists, changes made on [Information] screens, trimming information for pictures in [Photo], video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information.

The only way to sort this is to RESTORE my PS3 system or see what sony can do but they will charge me. I would wipe my hard drive clean but because I cant back up my BF3 data I dont want to :(

Ouch, that is weird.

Don't forget to update the thread when you get it sorted, so maybe it will help the next person with this issue. 👍

Good info to know.

I had the same problem as the OP last night. Playstation is a 1 year old slim. I've had a couple freezes since 2.02 and didn't know about the disc removal/replace and eventually had to power button it off, came back on with no problems those times.

Then last night I was playing GT5 and some friends were running it and then we switched games to mw3 and got the massive lock up and had to power switch it off again when turned back on it said it had corrupted data and it went through a process with a loading bar saying "recovering and fixing" I believe and when it was done all was good.......or so I hope.

we don't have a bunch of crap on this PS3, we only run Gt5, mw3 and previously black ops.

I would recommend doing this \/

- To remove dust just simply get any household hoover & run it along all the vents on your PS3. You can also try the PS3's auto clean feature, to do this just disconnect all the leads from your PS3. Then hold down the disc eject button & plug the power leads back in. The cooling fan will blow most of the dust out the back vent on the PS3. (WARNING: I recommend only doing this once every 2 months as it puts a lot of stress on the cooling fan.)

Its a paragraph from here \/

UPDATE

Ok I can fix my corrupt hard drive BUT it means I lose ALL my OFFLINE data, trophies, movies brought on PS store. I will still have my online ranks & data but offline campaigns etc will be lost :(

SOOOOO A VOTE IS IN HAND!

Just comment either YES to do it or NO its not worth it.

Well I won't tell you yay or nay on this one, but it will make your games NEW again so to speak. I started replaying GT5 on a new psn and it has been fun, even better now that I'm on a wheel and all these upgrades that are there now that were not in the beginning.

If you have PS+ you might be able to copy BF3 to the cloud. I don't have BF3 yet, so I can't confirm this.

Wait, eject the disc and put it back in, and a froze game should work? I always shut it off when it freezes...
