Ok, so it seems there is now new news on the PS3. So here were the answers, and the questions.

1:
Q)What will PS3 graphics look like?
A)In-game scenes willl be powered by the Unreal 3 engine, technology that's being created for graphics hardware on par with what NVIDIA is creating for Sony's use in PS3.

2:
Q)Will the PS3 still play DVDs?
A)Yes. In fact, it will play movies/games/music stored on Sony's upcoming Blu-Ray disc format, along with current DVD videos, CD music, and home-burned CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, etc.

3:
Q)How will the graphics compare to the Xbox 2?
A)We're reaching a point where the next-generation consoles will be on a pretty level playing field graphically. PS3 and Xbox 2 should have very similar visual process; it's going to be more about who uses the hardware best and has the best art teams.

4:
Q)Will I be able to play online with the PS3?
A)Definately. Just look at the newer, slim PS2 -- it's ready to go onlineout of the box, as is the PSP. Built-in wireless networking is also a very likely feature to expect.

5:
Q)Should I expect more games to run in High Definition?
A)All PS3 games are being designed with progressive scan TVs in mind. Some will run even higher than 480p. In-game digital surround sound is also part of the spec.

6:
Q)Will it play PS1 and PS2 games?
A)It will most definately play PS2 games, although Sony is still looking into PSone compatibility.

7:
Q)Will the pads be different?
A)Yes, and you can expect them to feature at least 2 new buttons to take advantage of new features Sony will introduce with PS3.

8:
Q)Will the controller ports/memory cards change?
A)It's very likely that the PS3 will stick with only 2 controller ports to ensure seamless backwards compatibility with PS2. PS3 will almost certainly ditch Memory Cards in favor of Memory Sticks, as used by the PSP. The system will retain support for good ol' PS2 memory cards, however.

9:
Q)Yes or No: Will there be a HDD?
A)No. Sony is set on making the Memory Stick format its main storage medium, and will offer capacities large enough to be used for demo downloads, music, movies, and massively-multiplayer online games.

10:
Q)Will I be able to play PSP games on PS3?
A)No. You will be able to connect wirelessly to PS3 using your PS2 for many functions, but UMDs are not supported by PS3.

I see some nice things. And not so nice. Although sharing the same memory deal with the PSP, it seems PSP games will not be able to be played on the PS3. I still don't know, but it looks like you can't use PS3 game info stored on a memory stick and use that same stick to play the same game for the PSP.

This is my main concern, actually. I want to be able to play all PS and PS2 games on the PS3.

Hahaha, srew XBOX, my PS2 games will load faster on the PS3.

Yeah!! PS2 games never loaded on Xbox WTF was that all about... (j/k)

Anyways... I don't think Sony will make PS 1 games work on the PS3 no reason to... A PSone costs the same as a new PS2 game... Why bother?

Because I don't want my room cluttered with 3 different playstation consoles. If I can play everything all in one, it'll be easier/more organized.

We dont want Sony to have another laser problem, right?

I like not having a hdd, it will save money to produce the system. But 2 more buttons on the controller? Hmm. does that mean current buttons will be smaller or will the controller be bigger?

About the Unreal 3 engine, im guesing PS3 will have more than 64 mb or ram

Well from, what Comp. Magazine has said, the Unreal 3 engine is an amazing piece of technology. Mixing that with what Nvidia is making can only mean good things, right?

No, games can be designed to use any game engine, not just the Unreal engine. They can use the Source engine, the Renderware engine, the Quake III engine, the Cry engine, etc., etc., etc.

I'm hoping the PS3 can play all Playstation games(1,2 & 3). If they were able to play PSP games, the feature will help outsell the new xbox and Nintendo even more, but probably will add too much to the cost.

I remember reading somewhere there would be 2 trigger buttons as well as the four shoulder buttons on the new controller, but if it is an all new controller it may be a new configuration as well.

Yeah, the comment about it using the Unreal Engine is really weird. I don't understand what that means. Unless of course the "Unreal Engine" is just so advanced that it has tools to model any style of game. That would totally rock. If the game engine were hard coded in the console ... oh my gosh ... everything would be designed to kick ass.

... a moment of silence ...

WOW!

i really hope they dont change the controller i know i heard they arent going to change it through some site. trigger buttons would be gay we only have so much fingers?

Triggers are different from the top buttons on the DS2. Have you used the XBox S Controller? It's quite nice. I would like the next DualShock to be slightly larger and incorporate such triggers.

i like the x-box S controller. Something like that would be good and yes we do only have so many fingers

i think they were just saying that the unreal engine (just using unreal as an out of the hat example) looks the best that nvidia is capable of producing at the time being.

basically, it is the pinnacle of graphic presentation.

oh, and backwards compatability should NOT be incorporated. you have a ps2. why in the hell would you need ps3 to take the place of it? i think sony needs to concentrate on the future, and leave past games to be played on the consoles they were built for. are they not content with themselves and their previous products?

I've never been an fan of the Playstation controllers. I'd like an Dreamcast style controller, but compact in size like the GameCube controllers.

It's a well-known fact that consoles will fail long before the discs go bad. When my PS2 dies, I'd rather not have to buy another one if I have a perfectly servicable PS3 in my living room.

EDIT:

Going back to the original Q&A... How certain are we that the system will utilize the Unreal 3 engine, or an equivelant, to full potential? I just got done watching the tech-demo vid from E3, and was more than impressed by what the engine is capable of (in a system that's powerful enough, of course).

Sony held a design contest for a new controller over a year ago. They said they were looking for a new design with room for more buttons then what are on the DS2 controllers. They said for contestants to, "Think bigger, and with more features." I never knew what happened or who was the winner. I read that at a Japanese website translated with bablefish.

Oh, and don't worry about the dual laser pickup system. I'm sure Sony learned their lesson with the PS2. The Blu-ray drives can get by on just one simple designed single laser assembly.

Thanks for the info, Solid. I forgot that Playstation controllers are smaller controllers to start with, so I guess it is ok for them to get little bigger.

said that the playstation COULD 2.5MB of on chip memory (512 KB L2 and 8 * 256 KB) and top clock speeds exceeding 4 GHz:scared:

It can, question is if it will.If it's causing too much heat at 4,6 Ghz they will simply reduce the clock speed.

Here are some more renders from EA Games. All of these are made with PS3 workstations so they pretty much represent the quality that we will be seeing in about 3 years time.

I just can't wait to see MGS with gfx like that.Or GT4.It's going to be awesome.

It's gonna be an amazing system. Graphics look great, but I might pass on Resident Evil 5.

What do you mean?Of course it will have new games. It will also be backwards compatible so it will play PS2 games aswell.

For the best picture quality, why not just add a direct VGA output ( like with the Dreamcast ). A lot of people have computer monitors these days ( maybe more than HDTV )
The only reason while I'm waiting to replace my old Sony analog TV is for the release of PS3.
