Hey how's it goin'?

So I have FINALLY found the GT worldwide community huh... I can honestly say I never gave a solid effort before, but ahh well... I figured I would introduce myself since you guys seem to be a really close-knit positive community, compared to other games (omg im 12 and play halo with my mom's credit card and Im gonna r*** you... that gets old.)

So anywho, I'm Nate (Shadow Hado, Kage no Hadou) 23 yrs. from Southeastern WI. I have been playing Gran Turismo games since the very first one, and I always thought I was pretty good at them (THOUGHT is the keyword), but I knew somewhere out there (HERE) there was a group of people who made me look scrubby.

Well, after a 2 year disappearing act, I have decided to get heavily back into GT. I mean, I have had a Logi DFP wheel for two years and never opened it... But now I have the time and space to have a dedicated cockpit so yay me.

Anywho, now that I've said a bunch of things noone cares about and have finished my ramblings due to sleep deprivation and pain killers...
************************************************

I was wondering if you guys could give me some good places to start for learning how to maximize opportunities in the tuning options of the game. I know you can adjust downforce, ride height, etc etc... and I saw you guys use alot of abbreviations and nicknames for all of this, so I was wondering if there was something I could read to get a better understanding of all of this and somehow learn the lingo so I'm not lost? lol

I mean I understand there's settings other users have put up, but I don't want to take someone else's work unless it's the same end result I come to in the end. Also, I saw you guys talking about lowering power 10% or 20% or increasing things by .4 and such, ummm basically for things like WRS and OLR and the like... I mean I have always had a very general understanding of the game, simulation racing, and the like but you can't be the best if you don't understand the details and change them to meet your style... And I never knew where to start, so I just... Didn't start.

Again I'm not asking for what settings to use, or what car on what track... But some help with the lingo, understanding of the changes made such as gains, losses, benefits and such... So I can learn it all for myself... Then use settings to save time after that. :D:D:D

So if any of you would be so kind as to give me a hand here as a noob to the forums I would greatly appreciate it. Hopefully I will be back in the swing of things by the time GT5 releases... Hell I have plenty of time for that. Thanks!

Welcome to GTP Shadow Hado,

My suggestion would be to read the subforums
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=55
(settings and tuning) and the read the Stickies in all forums/subforums as they contain a wealth of information. 👍

A fair amount of 'acronyms' can be found in the game themselves.
Go in to the tuning shop of any car and just look at the 'upgrades' you can install for a car. They all have acronyms.

I'll take the tyres as an example.
N1-N3, S1-S3, R1-R5, DT and SN
N1 is Normal economy tyre.
S3 is Sports soft
R1 is Racing superhard
R5 is a qualifying tyre
DT and SN are Dirt and Snow tyres.

Just spend lots of time reading the posts and you'll get the hang of it.:sly:

When the Search button hasn't given you the result you were looking for then feel free to ask by preferably posting in an exisiting thread that most matches your query.

AMG.

Welcome to the forums, fellow Wisconsinite! :)

If you're interested in learning more about tuning, like AMG said, you should check out the tuning and settings forum. You don't have to rely on the settings of others, either, as there are several tuning guides (among those stickies he mentioned) that will provide you with the knowledge you need to create your own setups, instead of just "giving you the answers," so to speak.

I'm not a fan of tuning myself, so don't come to me for specific knowledge in that area :scared: , but I'd be glad to help point you to GTP members who do know what they're doing, if you'd like. :)

(Oh, and just to get the usual friendly warnings out of the way, always remember to search before starting a new thread (don't worry, this one is okay), and watch out for Famine ;) )

Welcome to GT Planet

I have just what you need, click on the link below and you will find two GT4 tuning guides that cover all aspects of tuning and what effect they have.

Lots of illustrations and explanations and an example tune to get you started.

They are in .pdf format and are best downloaded and then printed out, have a read and if you have any questions simply post them in the thread in question and I will answer them as soon as I (or another member) can.

As the others have said, read the forum stickies. I would have read this if I were you. Welcome to the forums, personally I think it's one of the best forums around. I am sure you will be well met here.

About the abbreviations: Mostly, when posting suspension-setups, people just post the setting for the front and then the rear, in the order of which they appear in the GT4 Tuning screen - Springs first, then Ride Height, Damper Bound, Damper Rebound, Camber, Toe, Anti-roll bars. BR or BB are common abbreviations for Brake Balance - also just reffered to as "Brakes". Auto (number) refers to the automatic gear-ratios that GT4 can give you. +20% -10% refers to the common tune made in Arcade mode - the maximum increase in power and the maximum decrease in weigth. -10% Weight is common in OLR, because replays can't be checked for weight, so to prevent cheating, everyone has the minimum weight. The power is mostly +0 or +20 percents, just because it's easy to remmember.

Is there a reason you pointed this out? I mean, I understand I was rambling a little in the beginning of my post, but what are you referring to when you say "I would have read this if I were you?" I'm just curious, that's all... But I would like to give a huge thumbs up on the "don't be a douchebag" on the smart post thread. I support it! That initial post will probably be the only of it's kind... I was also kinda using it to see how it was received in general by the community, but also after reading your thread I'm relieved to see the community treats each other like adults.

Also, thanks everyone for the quick replies! As for reading the sub-forums, I did read quite a bit of this and that, along with the FAQs posted throughout the site, and I also searched through some of the game guides looking for something to help with the understand of abbreviations. Just gotta get more comfortable with the layout and where-to-find-what.

Thanks again!

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure eiriksmil just wanted to point out that thread to you for future reference, not because he found fault with your post at the beginning of this thread. After all, despite his (impressive 👍 ) knowledge of english, he is from Norway, so that sentence may have ended up being worded a little differently than what he intended. :)

Welcome to GTP Nate, all the good advise has already been given. Also remember the site is much bigger than just the Gran Turismo forums, we have forums for cars as well as movies, hobbies, sports and other topics.

I didn't think especially of your language when I referred to the thread, I just wanted you to see what GTP is all about. Also, most new members forget the Search-buttons and that what they're writing is making an impact on the first impressions. I have a good first impression of you, because you said "Hello" to us instead of just posting. It's a good way to become "one of the guys", because we'll notice you.
Many users will be remembered for their first posts. If one start out as an idiot, one will be regarded as an idiot by other members. However, a well start is always a bonus.
The fact that you read the thread I posted, and have read all the tips in this thread tells me that you are going to be a good (maybe quality-badged?) poster.
Again, welcome to the forums! I hope you'll have a nice time here.

Welcome to GTPlanet, Shadow Hado.

I Hope you have a great stay, And remember to read the AUP

Again, Have a great stay.

And in addition to welcoming another new member who sounds intelligent to GTPlanet, I'll also say that you can completely trust anything Scaff says on the subject of tuning. What he knows of the game, he knows very well, and where his results are inconclusive, he's always sure to let you know that also.

Enjoy your stay with us!

Hey shadow, welcome to the best site on the interweb. If you like Pina Cloada and you have half a brain you'll realize the AUP is pretty much common sense, and obviously you're old and mature enough to know that. It seems to be a trend that the younger kids are always egtting in trouble simply because they're young. I haven't outgrown it, I can tell you that!

Anyway, have a good time. It won't take long to get to know many people people here, especially if you carous the more "intimate" threads, like the Pictures of Yourself thread in the Rumble Strip. Sorry, no links so you'll have to learn your way there, which I'm sure you've already done. See ya 'round.

EDIT: And the meme so great it's not really a meme; be careful around Famine. He's British, he's drunk, he's Indigo, and he plays in the NLHL (National Lesbian Hockey League).

Heya again!

Hey no problem at all man I was just a little confused as to what exactly I was focusing on heh, and I do appreciate the compliments so early! :D

Again to everyone else thanks for the warm welcome and I am sure you will be seeing me around the forums here and there. Oooo Oooo! Yes I must agree with everyone, I have read a good portion of Scaff's two-part tuning guide... INCREDIBLE.

Our good friend Duċk is also a trusted authority on tuning.

Anyways, welcome to the 'Planet, and make sure you read, reread, and rereread the links in my signature.

I second that. Don't mess with Famine, or else you'll get a taste of the baanhammer that was stolen from daan.

Well, I ended up becoming premium before I saw your sig... lol

I figure this is a site I am going to spend a long time with, I have no problem fronting the money right from the start. Worse case scenario, I don't use it as much as I can and I still help this board stay alive.

Stop being a premium donna.

Hado, I hope the whole "premium means more important" thing doesn't infect you. :)

Not to take away anything from Duck, because he means well, but I don't like most of his setups. They are pretty much made from a formula, with a lot of calculations and assumptions, but not enough testing either before or after the changes. That approach rarely works well, and it definitely dosen't work well in GT4.

Welcome, Shadow Hado! :) I see you've made yourself Premium already!

Enjoy your stay here, as I'm pretty sure you will. Many people don't leave once they start posting. ;)

And that's fine. I know not everyone likes my settings. However, I do have a high satisfaction rate. :sly:
