I've just read about the new DLC..

Can somebody explain this to me?
"• Now possible to select “Disable collisions” in the [Event Settings] of online races."

I believe it will cause you to "ghost" through other cars when you hit them.

For example if you're behind someone, and you brake later then them, instead of running into them, you'll sail on through as if they weren't there

This setting might actually make public lobbies bearable. Crossing my fingers that the hosts set it up this way.

Interesting, I like it.

I like that feature and I don't like that feature.

Heres Why:

Scenario 1-Drag Racing

You are drag racing at Indy and having a good time. You are waiting in line for your next run. Suddenly, some asshole decides to ram everyone. The whole field gets disrupted and everyone must get back on the strip to drag race again. Obviously you are very pissed.

Scenario 2:-Circuit Racing

You are BEING BATTLED by another player for the lead. He is very close but cannot pass you. Both of you are approaching a slow corner. Both are you are preparing to brake. You hit the brakes at late as you can but your opponet behind you hits them later that you and goes through you due to the "Disable Collissions" feature. He takes the lead and ends up winning the race. You are pissed.

I agree, even with a friend of mine when we were casually racing one time, he acted like a complete **** and rammed me at one corner, then got away and was impossible to catch in the remaining laps, really pissed me off, but with ghosting, he'd just go into the wall, like he deserves, I'll admit this is a good feature.

All it needs to do is to disable collisions when the closing speed is over a certain speed (10 or 20kmh). I know that the penalty system does it sometimes, but not all the time.
Circuit racing with all ghost cars would be rubbish. Can definitely see the benefit for drag and drift people though.

I can see a logic for this in drag, draft and drift rooms, but for circuit racing it's pretty much removing a key component of the racing experience - getting past your opponent. The only circuit based race this setup would suit is one that doesn't exist in GT5, and that's Time Attack.

This about sums it up. However, using this option actually creates a Time Attack mode because that's exactly what a collision-disabled race is - simultaneous time attack competition. I've raced this way a couple times in other games, and while slipstreaming off of someone's dashboard is somewhat amusing for the first few seconds, beyond that this just saps the vast majority of the fun out of racing.

It's main value in circuit racing is that it can enable people who want to race each other but have horrible problems with lag to do so. You can of course also use it to thwart persistent rammers -- but the ability to kick them out makes that unlikely to be necessary unless you're just having "one of those days" with many of them.

Basically it turns online racing into a time trial , sort of.

So its basically like when penalty is on "high" ... if youve noticed that setting, if youre going fast enough youll just ghost right through the other driver rather than colliding with him

I agree this is great for drag racing and the casual side of GT5 online

On the other hand it would absolutely ruin circuit racing. avoiding crashes and passing people is everything. As the poster above me said, it becomes a time trial

But I digress, as this is just going to be a feature, not a mandate.

I can't see too many racing series using that feature. Will be nice in shuffle rooms to, as there is often a lot of rubbing & bumping in those races.

It also may lead to an increase of rallying-esque events if people use their imaginations.

I really don't like the idea of it. It takes the fun in battling with someone like Smuttsy mentioned and it also takes the simulation factor out of it. The more things they keep adding to GT5, the more UN-realistic it has become. I just wish they could keep the game as they advertise and make it an actual simulation game for racing cars, not a simulation game for driving a time trial with transparent cars along side of you. Any lobbies hosted by me won't have this turned on for sure. I'll just use the good old reject button.

Good idea. Would be a bit easier to host rally events without it turning into demolition derby.

I've wanted this option since I saw it in F1 game back in 2007. Same argument back then of simulation vs. arcade. Then GT5 Prologue came out and everybody saw the need for private lobby and eject button because of all the punting. I was like, what about collision disable? I liked it in F1. NO!!!! It's not realistic!! Uh, it's a video game, dude. It's my favorite game, and I race super clean, but I just play for fun in open lobbies. Now we've got private lobbies and eject button (which should have been from launch) and now, finally, collision disable. I think it's great for the Saturday night open lobby guy like me. I'm ready for a full online field of F1s on a fast track and no one getting punted.

Wuhoo disable collisions is awesome!
My connection is terrible so I'm usually getting whalloped @ 200mph due to lag!

Surely if he hit the brakes later than you did, you could have hit yours later? Otherwise they would be carrying too much speed and over-cook the corner or crash?

I can see the argument in someone going through you rather than around, but disagree about the late braking scenario you've quoted...

This is a FANTASTIC feature for all those nutballs out there who don't really want to race at all!!!!!

This is a FANTASTIC feature for all those turkeys who just want to drive like kooks around the track, going fast from sloppy corner to sloppy corner.

This is a FANTASTIC feature for those jokers who don't like actually "racing" but think people in other cars in online races are "in their way", and really just want a hot lap contest with witnesses.

WHOO-HOO!!!
It's a great idea!!!

But one that I won't be using.

I'd prefer to have it be so that you can switch penalties on, but switch ghosting to off.

Or have an option in addition to "heavy damage" to also have "permanent damage" where the car's damage isn't fixed in the pit, but requires a trip to GT Auto. :D

(They better took more time and improved the "Broken" Penalty system ...)

Could be lots of fun once u get used to it :) .
As untill today u always get completly trown off by cars going into Penalty system Ghost mode waiting to get back Ungostted and hit other cars.

Would this be something that worked all the time, or up to a certain speed like it already is? For example, instead of a car ghosting once you're over a certain speed like it does already, would you be able to drive through a stationary car that isn't ghosted?

I think it's a good idea, but obviously not one for competitive circuit racing.

It's an excellent idea.

Who likes being side swiped by someone when you're trying to pass them?

If you race clean you wouldn't even notice it was switched on.

I'm not sure how I feel about this in drift lobbies either, simply because so many people see drifting online as a form of time attack anyway and feel the need to be the fastest one around the track regardless of how much time was spent actually drifting.

I was always bothered by the ghost issue during the online races.

I'm trying to race clean and fair, not just for pleasure but for the other drivers as well. From time to time IT ALWAYS HAPPENS, an idi%%$/ came, and starts to bumping his car to all of us. And that REALLY piss me off. I drive on saturdays with my father-in-law and some regular friends, we have full damage and tyre degradation, so if some guy come and start to mess around, it gets tricky. Luckily, most of the time those guys just stay for 5 seconds because of the damage, but it's annoying.

Recently, I find out we could really bump our cars into each other, but just by accident. And I thought it was because I set the type of race in competitive. It's really fun, and because we always race with 5 or more laps, the races became glorious sometimes...

So, this option is helpful to some guys. Not for me but is a great thing to have I think.

I think I'm going to like this feature.. So I can finally use my race prepped Midget online without others constantly feeling the need to give me a push on the straights... I drive slow cars because I want to go slow, (going fast in a slow car I find more challenging than going fast in a fast car) I don't need (insert random idiot) to push with his (insert big ass fast car).

But ofcourse for competition racing this is a feature that ruins the whole idea of racing, that's why it's an optional feature :)

If you race clean you wouldn't even notice it was switched on.

Who ever said racing clean means ZERO ACCIDENTS OR RACE INCIDENTS EVER?

Also, do you consider ghost-passing racing clean?
Because I don't.

If you race clean you wouldn't even notice it was switched on.

No, because the idea of 'battling' in a race would be destroyed.

People would just drive through, and there would be no epic tension when getting close in a race!

This. Exactly my point 👍
Adding another thing to that argument with no intention to change the subject, I really hope they improve the damage, visually speaking at least (technically will be welcome too also) to have even MORE tension during races. Racing with full damage and tyre degradation is awesome by the way, if the drivers are the right ones, of course.

I was watching some tests around The Ring last night, and a Corvette slowly hit the back of a Porsche, and the whole section of the car kept dancing the entire race...
But yeah, the idea of battling in a race would be destroyed, so I'm pleased they put the option as, well, an option.

The feature is good for pure time trial lobbies or 'sprint' style events. It's interesting for sure, but an odd feature considering the other things they could be adding, such as.. I don't know... offset/wheel fitment options?
