Is the next XBOX going to be the 720??

They can't call it the XBOX 3 because that will make it sound inferior to the next-gen Playstation.

Simplest thing to do is just call it the 720 and hope you come up with a better name for the next one.

They will probably do like Nintendo. Xbox was never Xbox 1. It was just Xbox. This was Xbox 360. For all we know, the third Xbox could be Xbox Next.

Same reason Nintendo hasn't called things by the number. Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Game Cube, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii U.

Or PSP, PSP Go, PSP Vita. Nintendo Game Boy, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo 3DS.

Playstation is the only one with the PS1, PS2, PS3. That is a rare thing to do. So I am not seeing any trend here. Xbox never started with 1 or 2, so I don't see why the doubling of the number.

While I don't remember the exact reason, it was a conscientious decision. Something to do with us, the gamers, and the Xbox itself - hence the "360". If you can find those developer diary videos from early to mid 2005, one of the guys a part of the team explains why.

You can also automatically discount any possibility of the successor being called Xbox 3 as that's entirely redundant.

Call it the XTREMEBOX because its so radical with the latest technology and whatnot .

I am not ready for another console yet and honestly I dont think Microsoft is either. The current 360 has been one of the most unreliable gaming consoles in history. I am in no hurry for the next one at all.

I already have a backlog of at least 15 games for the 360. Some of those are games I have wanted to rent since 2007. And thats not including the games that will be coming out this month which will put my backlog over 20 games. Thats just for the 360. That doesnt include PC games or PS3 games. I dont care if they wait another 10 years for a console because I still wont be finished with my backlog list by then. I am still backlogged on about 200 PS2 games.

According to what I have been seeing such as links like this one, http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Next-Xbox-Will-Likely-Launch-xfoftp-4009385838.html it looks to be coming possibly in 2013. I do think it will be delayed just a bit and get pushed back to early 2014 but they may hurry it up since the Wii U is just around the corner (coming in 2012)

Cant see either device ever looking like that - all the concepts floating about are just self made concepts.

I for one will refuse to buy a PS4 if they continue to use the antique controller design, compared to the ergonomic masterpiece that is the Xbox 360 Controller. Dual Shock 3 that thing is hurrendous to use with FPS games.

I like physical media ! It has resale value as well as feels like you have got something for your money.

Though that sounds pretty cool, XBOX Infinity. To me, it seems like it would be the last one produced. There would be another one after it, but what could top Infinity?

XBOX 720 sounds ridiculous. Something like XBOX 360² would be better. If Kinect continues in a positive direction, and I'm sure it will and new system will focus more on it, I think XBOX Active would be a good name. Just a thought.

There are still a few areas that need improving, mainly in the FPS and anti-aliasing departments.

I also don't see physical media going anywhere since most people have internet caps or it's just plain slow.(maybe the generation after the upcoming one though)

There would be another one after it, but what could top Infinity?

You've got tessellation, ray tracing, advanced MIP mapping, etc, etc, etc. There's a lot of techniques that can't be used this generation that are going to be utilized heavily (or at least so I hope!) in the next.

Take the very best DirectX 9 game you can find, Crysis. Now compare that to, say, Metro 2033 or Crysis 2 in D3D 11 and you'll have a good enough idea of what the next Xbox is already shooting for.

It may even use a superset of D3D 12.
