Official details of the new generation 3-Series Cabriolet has been released. As expected, it switches to the popular retractable hard roof to offer better thermal and noise insulation, plus larger window area unobtainable from fabric roof. The 3-piece electro-hydraulic mechanism opens and closes in 22 seconds. Boot volume is 350 liters and 210 liters when the roof is up and down respectively, which is competitive by class standard.

Five models will be offered: 335i is powered by the new twin-turbo direct-injection 3.0 inline-6 with 306 horsepower. 330i and 325i are powered by the existing magnesium-aluminum block inline-6 with 272hp and 218hp respectively, but they gained direct-injection and deleted Valvetronic. 320i will get a new direct injection 2.0-liter 170hp inline-4 instead of the current 150hp unit. In the diesel side, initially there will be 330d with 231hp 3.0 turbo diesel six. Expect more diesel variants to join.

Well, damn. That looks almost better than the Coupe. And that they managed to get the kink in the quarter window (albeit a small one) despite it being a folding hardtop is brilliant. Also, having the 335Ci's engine makes this a great alternative to the AMG SLK55

Ugh. I hate it. That change from the flat rear deck to the slanted rear window is terrible. So far the only hard top to get it right is the C70.

That's really nice. Heavier, maybe, but totally worth it. I thought the 6-Series coupe would have had a folding hardtop, and I think it would really look nice with it. Nice job, BMW. 👍

I don't know if it's a real alternative to the SLK55, definitely not the Black Edition. If the upcoming M3 has a folding hardtop option, then you've got a SLK55-beater.

That actually looks about as well proportioned as the Volvo/Ford coupe-cabrio platform. Great work from BMW. 👍

I fail to see your logic that adding a hardtop alone makes it a car for females. Yes, I agree the C70 looks better. But why does that make this a girls car? Especially compared to its predecessor?

Those pictures arent very good at showing the proportions of the car that make it a girls car. I might go up the ones that I saw of the bmw after this post.

Basically the cars rear end is super long now, and the car reminds me too much of other girl cars, like every single CC on sale.

Well its a great car, but I'd never buy one as a convertable. Sure, I love convertables, don't get me wrong... But in most instances, it dilutes (sp?) the car to the point where it just isn't as much fun anymore. That would be a big problem with the 3-series.

The certainly is a status car, and it does a good job of fitting that model. They will sell well, particularly to women, and it may push the competition (read Mercedes and Audi) to build their own vario-roof spinoffs of the C-class and the A4.

But IMO, I'd rather save a few dollars and go with a car that was designed to be a convertable in the first place, and IMO, looks better:

(The Eos, and I'd go for the 2.0T and DSG... No need to spend too much money)

I see what you mean, and I agree that it doesn't look right. It doesn't look like a girl's car to me, but my criteria is different for that. To me, anything that looks trendy or cute but doesn't perform is a girl's car. That includes the Beetle, new (and just-previous) Eclipse, new Miata, and, every compact front-drive CC.

The new Volvo C70, however, is definitely a quality design. 👍

Just wondering, but I noticed that the Bentley Continental GTC has just about the same proportions as the new 3 convertible. Do you think of the GTC as a girl's car, too?

...I haven't seen many men driving the Continental GTC, nor would I "expect" it. It screams "Paris Hilton" in so many ways, it is rather silly.

I think the only convertables that are really "acceptable" for most guys are the likes of the Mercedes SL and Jaguar XK, among others of course. Not to say that all four-seater convertables are completely feminine in nature, but they just have that "look" to them.

...If they end up building the 300C convertable, that may be an exception to the (percieved) rule...

Uh, I didn't think the GTC was actually even out to begin with.

What are you talking about? This car's rear end is about as long as my 330Ci. Does that make my BMW a girl's car?

EDIT* In fact, I think my 330Ci is longer.

Like I said, does that make mine a girl's car just because the rear end is "super long"?

Nope the bentley is definatly unisex. I only think the E93 looks like a girl car with the roof up. With it down I think it looks great. But with the roof up, ewwwww:idea:

My comments were regarding the vehicle with the roof up. I love the E46 convertible but it doenst have that long ass look when the roof is up.

girls car 💡

It's not that the back is a "long ass" then, it's only the fact that back has a curved upward design. I still fail to see how that makes it a girl's car.

Because it looks so similiar to other traditional hardtop convertible girl cars, which they dont sell in america.

The 2er will be the modern successor to the e36/e46.

Cant wait for it to be launched :)

I'd take the Beemer over the Volvo anyday.

Tell me I'm driving a womens car and I'll quickly point out I could easily make a replica of the Volvo with lego blocks.

It's not. It's really, really, really not.

It's neither curvacious, original, muscular, cominating, cute or cuddly or even shockingly bad looking.

It's just, bland.

I disagree. I think the c70 will stand out from the crowd much more than the beemer as every one and their dog has a 3 series in the UK and im sure it will be the same story for the E93. I reckon once they release some sport bodykits for it I will warm up to the car, but as it stands now I would have the Volvo.

The beemer only looks great with the roof down.

I don't understand where the "girl's car" thing comes in.

The new 3-series coupe cabrio has really good, balanced proportions, and avoids the "big butt" syndrome that affects other hardtops and convertibles (dishonorable mention: 206cc, 350Z roadster, then new Volvo/Ford C70/Focus converts).

If that's a girl's car, with its balanced front and rear dimensions (hell, the rear end doesn't even look as flabby as in the four door!), then I wonder what you'd consider a guy's car?

I'm a Ford fan, myself, but no way is the C70 as balanced as that design. They need to move the A-pillar back half-a-foot to balance it (c'mon, sacrifice a little trunk space... people don't buy those things to go grocery shopping!)... although I do think the C70 is nice, and not as horribly compromised a design as the new Brera Cabrio... yes, I love the headlights and the shape, but dear god are the overhangs hideous!

Uh... C70, stand out? When it looks nearly exactly the same as the Focus Cabrio?

You think the C70 looks good because it's more excelusive? Err, what?

What you've basically done is confused your 'need to be different' with what you think is good looking.

Are you guys telling me that when you see this you think "mmmm what a nice looking car, I really like the way that looks"

3er_Cab_4.jpg

To me it looks like just another BMW, nothing to give more than two looks. The volvo however, and the alfa you think, hey thats a volvo/alfa, thats pretty nice.

Because there are so many goddamn bmws in london they are nothing special anymore. Just run of the mill. If 30% of girls all looked like kate moss I doubt people would double take on her looks either, but the thing about the BMW is that it never was a beatuty in sedan or coupe form.

Again, you're very confusing, and contradictory.

First you say that all BMWs look the same, hence 👎, but that all Alfas and Volvos are instantly recognisable as Alfas and Volvos but are 👍?

I am quite a fan of BMW styling. Though I do find the 5 series abit nasty and the Z8 hideous (I know some of you love it). And yes, despite the automotive poverty that is South Wales, I do see alot of BMWs around. But I also see alot of Volvos and more than a handful of Alfas. I've given BMWs second glances ("Was that a new M5!?", only once I've been able to say, yes.) and I've looked twice at Alfas (Alfa GT anyone?), but never, ever at a Volvo. Yes the T5s are fast, but they're not lookers.

P.s. The only reason I'd couble take Kate Moss is because she's famous. Not because she's particulary hot.

Well, fyi, we don't all live in London, so I still fail to see how this car is a girl's car because of the rear. In the states, that's backwards. People see a Volvo, they say, "Meh, a Volvo conv.". They see BMW, they like it.

Oh btw, we feel the same thing about the Volvo. It's just a Volvo, nothing more than a run of the mill Volvo, conv. or not.

I'm beginning to get annoyed at your experiences with cars in London being disclosed as facts for everyone.

Watch out, girls car coming through!
b35820ja2.jpg
Oldschool. Nice. 👍

I'd take the Bimmer over C70 in a heartbeat. This "girl car" thing, I don't get. Sounds like personal issue(I don't mean anything by this).

I'd take McLaren's Bimmer over all of the above. :D

So far, I like the way it looks with the top down. With the top up, however, I'm going to have to get used to those gaps where the roof folds. It just doesn't hide its convertible-ness as well as an SL. :indiff:

Pshaw. I'd vote for the VW Cabrio or the Eos before that thing. :sly:

Regardless, I'd still watch out if I saw one of those headed my way. The brakes could fail at any moment under the stress of a 10-ton car like that.

Hmmm. This car has me split. Some angles it looks pretty good, like this one.
norm_2_orig.jpg

But unfortuntly I have to agree with Poverty with this rear-quarter view with the top up.

attachmentqh1.jpg

That's just a mess of lines. And is very, very, ugly.

^Thanks finally someone sees were im coming from. Like I have said before with the top down its gret, but with the roof up I find it kinda ugly and girl car like.

Funily enough on another forum I go on thats all about german cars, we had a poll about the C70 vs the E93 with the roof up and the bmw just about won, on a forum thats has alot of hardcore BMW members. Most people agreed that the back end of the E93 just doesnt look right.

someone photoshopped the c70 roofline to the E93
