Maybe it's just my TV (Sony 52" Bravia LCD), but on any of the night tracks, everything appears to be very "grainy." Not sure how else to describe it, anybody else get this sense?

Same here.

Does your Monaco tunnel look pixelated and grainy too?

I'll have to check when I get home, then post up my results.

It's not that bad sitting on the couch away from the TV, but when I'm using my wheel and very close to the TV it's quite apparent.

yup, looks the same here

panasonic 37" 100hz 1080p

All dark areas are like that, no idea what's going on.

same here , im playin in a full hd samsung

I had this problem also on GT5 Prologue... It's like an horrible noise filter. I'm playing GT5 on a SONY KDL-32EX500 with the PS3 video output at 1080p. For me is a graphic glitch of the game or my/our PlayStation are going to die. :nervous: I tried also to set 576p or 720p but nothing changed.

This is probably the best way to describe it.

Seems we are not at all alone. Other games don't have this problem during night/dark scenes, so I'm thinking it's something specific to GT5.

Again same here...had the same problem with GT Prologue...it appears everywhere that is black or dark, i.e. instrument panel, dashboard, tunnels, night etc. Again all other games are fine and I'm using a HDMI cable

Can anyone try the HDMI full-limited options and see if anything changes? (Not on my PS3 atm).

My 80GB fat PS3 is set to Limited because my TV does not support 0-255 RGB range. GT5 is the only game that shows this video problem.

glad im not alone...night races arent too terrible, but the tunnel at monaco looks horrible!

Yeah it looks pretty bad for me too. Night races are very grainy. 32" Sony Bravia at 720p

i have this too, but weird enough not in Toscana!

Yes, very pixelated. I thought it was my tv..guess not.

It looks like noise from a digital camera set at a high iso. It's not your screen, I'm using an ultra-wide gamut monitor that is normally used for motion picture production and I get the noise as well.

Long time, but ive had to register because this problem is really really annoying. In all dark places inside cockpit and the night sky, there is noise everywhere, like dancing fuzzy pixels. I cant stand driving at night because of it.

Im using a BenQ G2420HD Monitor, ive tried all the combinations of Full RGB/Limited RBG, Super White on/off and Deep Colour Auto/Off. Playing at 1080p, only races are affected.

At home on my Pioneer 42" 4280XD, i play in 720p, but it must be removing the noise (more powerful processing), as i havent noticed it.

Not much info around on this and PD should really take notice.

Yes. I'm on a 22" Samsung T220HD. Night races and the dark areas of cockpits seem to have a graininess shifting around in those areas.

If you own a sony Bravia, and this is happening, turn off all post prossesors, eg, the cinema effects, the contrast enhancer, and the mpeg noise reduction and turn the Sharpness level to "off".......

that should make the picture of your preferred games alot smoother and aliviate some of the issues with grainy looking images (especially on bluray and games)

I noticed this, too, and it is definitely in the game and not a technical problem. To me, it looks like some kind of dither effect they use to generate the desired level of darkness.

That is how would have described is as well. I was thinking bad CC Camera feed...
But yeah it is rather annoying and it is definitely the game and not our TV's. I already messed with my post processing in my TV's settings to see if it was the cause, it's not.

And judging by the range of TV's mentioned here just solidifies the fact it is the game.

I mean I am running a rather old now LG 42" Full HD(was never a strong TV to begin with) So I had chocked it up to that.

Thanks Hermanvongerman. Your suggestions helped a lot. Also, my in-game brightness was set to a negative value as I think GT5 is a little bright. I changed the brightness to 0, and readjusted my TV's own brightness/contrast settings to compensate, and the grain is almost completely gone. It's very strange that this only happens with GT5 and GT5 Prologue.

Here's my guess:

GT5 uses dynamic brightness. You notice it best when you exit a tunnel and your 'virtual eyes' have to readjust to the changed outdoor light conditions. When you enter a dark area, it probably does the reverse thing and artificially readjusts the sensitivity of your virtual eyes to the darkness - much like a high-ISO setting on a digital camera does (it basically amplifies the video signal, also amplifying any noise). Hence a similar digital grain effect as on a digital camera in darkness.

I'm guessing the reason they do this is because they want to simulate the dynamic sensitivity of the human eyes, which behaves differently from the dynamic range of a TV in normal conditions.

So basically it's normal? I'm really surprised any developer could release a game like that, let alone PD.

I know there are a couple of guys in this forum who know about 3D graphic design and probably can shed some light on this.

I found this on the net, but I'm not sure whether they're talking about the effect we all see:

Secondly, we have the issue of rendering more transparencies with regards to the game’s foliage. Trees and surrounding plants are all made up of subtle transparent elements which can take up a lot of memory bandwidth when using traditional alpha coverage. So instead, the developers have mitigated this somewhat by rendering all foliage in the game using the cheaper alpha-to-coverage technique. A2C works by rendering transparencies in a half-res, interlaced style manner, and the result is that all foliage in the game features a subtle screen door effect.

You can see this clearly above. Looking at the trees we can notice what appears to be a dithered look to things – the screen door effect, a common trait of A2C. Thankfully, at regular viewing distances (say 5 to 6 feet from a 32” screen) the effect isn’t noticeable at all. Instead, you can only see it when going slightly closer to the screen. And even then, it isn’t a big deal.

oh man this is awesome, I was driving at night on the ring, must've changed my bravias settings since posted this a year ago....anyways am all like WTH man how do I stop the graininess of this BS at night..... so googled it....and low and behold answered my own question ....thank you sir you're a genius:crazy:

You MUST set the tv settings like this
SHARPNESS : 0!!! did it work?

It seems it started happening after the last big update.
