I've noticed that there have been some posts and threads in here that hate on the GT-R, accusations that the developers made it better than it actually is, blah, de, blah.

Anyway, there may well be a reason it's as good as it is in the game. And that's because it's s**t hot and deadly IRL. Sadly I'm going to have to watch it again on catch-up, as my Virgin box took a nose dive during the broadcast.

Top Gear put the latest iteration of the GT-R around the Test Track last night, you can find the times in the link below. Even the older version posted a frankly superb time.

1:17.8..!!

PS – I know it’s far from being 'scientific', but look at the company it's keeping…

Personally, I love the GT-R. My fave car ever to come out of Japan, after the Supra.

Awesome car. I've only driven them stock in the game. (IRL) I got hounded out of the fast lane on the way home at the weekend by a bright orange GT-R. I soon realised why he wanted me to get out of the way, he was being tailed by a 370Z. I wound the windows down before I let them pass. The pair of them made a glorious sound, as they disappeared off into the sunset.

I understand some people think they're a bit OTT in the game, and maybe they are. But the figures suggest that this car is faster than just about all but the super expensive or superlight...

It is impressive to say the least. I just actually bought a V Spec yesterday in game. I was fairly impressed but it felt a bit bland. Just no real trait which stands out at all. Neutral is a good way to describe it. As a car I think it has been realistically modeled though. Unlike the MP4-12C which is nothing like it's real life counterpart. I did some test laps in the stock MP4 and V Spec GTR and the GTR was 3 seconds faster a lap on Trail Mountain.

But if we are using the TG power lap times as sort of evidence, this is a bit off. Surely the MP4 should be faster?

Still, i am warming to this car, going to make a fully tuned monster version for the ***** and giggles.

Certainly is a fast car. Probably faster than it "should" be. I do think it is a bit overhyped at times though. It puts down very fast times, but it also puts down times like other cars. A lot of tests put it on par with the R8, 911 Turbo, Corvette, etc.

One thing about Top Gear's track is that they use a standing start, so cars that are really great off the line get a small advantage. I kind of wish that they would do a standing start, rolling start, and rival runs where similar cars are driven on the same day.

As for being too fast in GT5, I think the GT5 version is alright, though 4WD in general seems a little strong (not really too much understeer with power). GT5P's version was ridiculous.

All in all, an impressive car, though I think I would take the R-34 Z Tune over it. I still can't forgive the car for being so heavy, and the old ones looked better for what that's worth.

i have to agree with you!

+1 for heavy and 34 and 32 looking better, (33 is driven by idiots, and looks ****)

topgear is by no means scientific test lol, they love to "boost" British cars, and the biggest factor in their leaderboard is probably the tyres on each car ;)

MP4-12C's handling is actually correct in GT5 as in RL.
Check the Fifth Gear's MP4-12C vs 458 Italia test, Plato even spun it.
It's quite a dissapointing car, not worthy of McLaren badge imo.

I've seen that episode of Fifth Gear mate and I wasn't so impressed with the MP4 but The Stig's lap in it was a totally different ball game in comparison to tiff and plato's test. It's an odd one to say the least. Lets hope any new McLaren models down the line are a bit better.

I like the car as it is a McLaren, and they make fantastic cars, I just don't feel it drives as well as it should. I might try to match the TG lap times just to see how far I am off with the GTR and the MP4.

Some official times: on the Nurburgring:

20,600 m (67,600 ft)

If you see the cars around there, the GTR must be a fantastic car to be able to drive this fast.

I realized that when I watched the Lotus Elise vs. Ford Mustang.:ouch:

Nissan GT-R Nurburgring 7:24:22

The lap starts from about 3 minutes into the video.

At the end there's an external shot of the car going through the Karousel that looks good.

Can't say for certain, but they usually turn off aids for the hot laps. They did show the difference last night by dragging the GT-R against the current fast Jag. All a bit embarrassing for the Jag as the GT-R disappeared down the runway without the slightest hint of tyre smoke.

Again, not sure about tyres. They usually pass comment if there's a specific type of tyre being used, such as semi-race-ubër-sticky ones. However, you're quite correct, tyre type and weather conditions do play a factor.

Not sure if you're insinuating that they're bias toward British cars, because the Jag got panned last night. This is Top Gear we're talking about though, so a small bucket of salt is required for anything that dribbles outta Jeremy's mouth..!!

This thread lead me on a multi hour Youtube adventure of Speed and Grins. Thank you OP.

My pleasure. I've been on several of those sorts of adventures after reading threads here :trouble:

I'm not a fan of the GT-R at all. I think it's a little over rated. But I don't care about that.

What bothers me the most is how people drive them in GT5. They drive it like it's a big heavy tank. At the start, they zoom up to the front with their AWD, force 3-4 wide into turn 1. Then clog everyone up for a couple laps. In the mean time, the one person lucky enough to excape the nonsense, has ran away with a 10 second lead.

Where's all the hate? I personally like it and thought it was widely praised.

I'm just talking about in-game, and you'll find your answer below ;)

Thank you for informing me, I didn't realise I was an idiot, sorry.

The 1:17.8 is the new 2012 GTR. The older model sits at 1:19.7- still as fast the the Ferrari 430 Scuderia and only a few tenth of a second slower than the 458 Italia and Enzo (though a tenth faster than the 599GTO).

I have to disagree with those in favor of the R34 and R32 when it comes to cosmetic. The great thing about the R35 is that even in race car forms- look at the GT500 (Super GT) version and the FIA GT1 version (and now the GT3 version as well)- they look great. The R34 is kinda "meh" in racing outfit.

Here's the TG review (of couse this will be off in a few minutes or so):

No surprise, but the GT-R is my favorite Nissan from the last few years. I think it looks great, and I don't feel like it was made better for GT5. It just has a bunch of versions.

I think what a lot of people miss when talking about the GT-R is that for the price, nothing else can touch it and it destroys cars that cost twice as much.

Not sure what British cars Top Gear 'boost', the Jag got torn apart at the weekend and the Astons often get slated for being all the same.

But if we are using the TG power lap times as sort of evidence, this is a bit off. Surely the MP4 should be faster?

Don't forget that the MP4 was partly developed at Dunsfold - where TG is filmed. It's just conjecture on my part, but this may have something to do with it?

What makes this car a damn lot more respectable is that as well as its performance, it costs a lot less than most of the cars whose lap times it is compared with. Not bad at all.

Nissan GTR is like a Logitech G27 - amazing piece of engeneering for a "cheap" price.

Well, its the 2012 model. Nevertheless, a great car, eventhough Im not a big fan of it. I never liked its look. Well, I never warmed up to the look of any japanese car so far. A GTR costs about 80K euros here in germany. Sounds like a good deal. Costs lest then those R8/M3/SLS and destroys those cars easily (and it seems like its very driver friendly).

And looks awesome too. Still, my favorite non-Ferrari/Lambo high performance vehicle is a ZR1 ;)

Impossible to live with ZR1 crappy interior. :indiff:

Personally, I'm not a fan of the GT-R. I get no emotion from it. It's never been pretty, and now it looks fat. It doesn't sound very nice. I do drive GT-R's occasionally in Gran Turismo 5, but I only use them for drag racing. But I really don't care for the GT-R. If I had the money for the GT-R, I wouldn't buy one. I'd rather have a nice Camaro and save some money.
