What the hell is up with this? Why can't Nissan put the rear door handle in the door like a normal manufacturer? Take a look:

I mean, sheesh. Sheesh!

That is all.

I checked out all the European Nissan SUVs (X Trail, Terrano, Patrol) and none of them have this stupid door-handle situation.

I don't know about those last two cars, but the Xterra is the worst vehicle every made. Do you see how small the way to get in on the bottom of the rear door is? It's really that small! It's insanely stupid!

As for the Pathfinder, man that thing is a total cow... Horrible power.

I've always kind of liked those door handles. Plus, doesn't it make more sense ergonomically? With normal handles, you have to twist your hand... with those, you raise your hands up without twisting them.

Right?!?

They're SUVs, therefore, they suck for reasons having nothing to do with door-handles.

I do like the styling of the mid-90s Pathfinder you posted.

If door handels were supposed to be ergonomical, they would be with the handle part facing upwards, like a 323 door handle upside down. But that creates problems like water getting in there and stuff.

The Xterra was always pretty poor. It's slow, chunky, and that outward part of the hatch door looks retarted.

If I had to make a wild-ass guess, I'd say it's because the reinforcement and latch hardware required in the jamb would interfere with the upper strut mount if you tried to place the door handle down where you want it.

I very much disagree with your statement about the Xterra, however I take even more offense to the above statement. You clearly haven't taken a ride in a Pathfinder in some time - it puts out 240 horsepower, more than the Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Isuzu Rodeo, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Land Rover Discovery, Mercury Mountaineer, Mitsubishi Montero or Toyota Highlander. It's also relatively light and fairly small.

I thought this was true also, but looking at pictures of the current ('96-present) and previous ('87-'95) Pathfinder as well as the current ('97-present) QX4, it appears as if it shouldn't be a problem. Additionally, no other manufacturer has this problem, and all manufacturers have to have upper strut mounts for the rear suspension, not just Nissan.

The Xterra was always pretty poor. It's slow,

Not only is it slow, it's the most powerful small SUV and one of the quickest.

Where do you people get off dissing Nissan for engine size and acceleration? They have some of the best in both departments.

I think the door handles on my WRX are some of the best. They are the grip-pull type found on some other cars. Just grab and yank. No funky pivoting.

They actually attempted to drag that on all the way until 1995 - wonder how many they sold that year. It wasn't actually the worst of the Nissan trucks at the time, they actually attempted to sell this...

...virtually unchanged for about ten years, ending with 1997 at which point they probably managed to get rid of about six. Interestingly, similar to Toyota's pickup at the time and Mazda's current pickup, Nissan never gave it a name - Canadians dubbed it the Hardbody (though I'm not sure why) but nothing was ever official.

Doug, the Mazda "Truck" still is the B-series. But they differ with engine size, such as the B-2000(a 2L I4) up to B-4000(a 4L V6). So rather than call them all different B and then a number, they just call it the truck, it use to be fully known as the B-series in the US up untill several years ago, and is supposedly going to be scrapped at the end of 2004. It's only been around since what like 1968 in Japan? In the US it was since '76 I think...

eeww what the **** is that first SUV?
In this part of the world, the second SUV, the Pathfinder is one of the better ones in its class, also not bad off road from reports
And the last one looks quite cool. Whats it called? Anyone got a link?
Ill take a Patrol though:D

Alfa Romeos 156 has the same type of door handles as well

The RX-7 has handles at the top too, though more in that Alfa Romero fashion.

I'm not claiming they're different cars, but they now have a different name as before. By the way, don't expect an '04 model from Mazda - the Ranger won't be re-designed at least until 2006, and Zoom-Zoom Mazda won't be holding its breath. Last year Mazda sold just over 20,000 which is an absolute disaster.

The second SUV is called the Nissan Pathfinder in the US also, as is the third SUV (though that was '87-'95 whereas the newer one is '96-present), as has been mentioned. A lightly re-designed Pathfinder will more than likely appear next year, but with Nissan's other two SUVs to supplement it, we probably won't see a new Pathfinder for about three years.

The last vehicle, known as the Pathfinder Armada, will be produced alongside the North America-only Titan pickup at Nissan's new truck factory in Canton, Mississippi. Don't expect it to come to Australia or anywhere else out of North America.

You'll find Alfa Romeo do it as well:

I know this, but from what I understand it's only on the 147 5-door and 156 (the GTV and Spider too if you find those to be the same thing, which I don't, exactly).

Zrow, only the 3rd gens. 1st and 2nd gens had normal Mazda-like doorhandles. Probe's also have side door handels, but they are on the edge of the door, and not on the door frame like the others. And they are fairly awkward to use.
