No Split Screen Replays, thoughts

For me this is probably going to be a bigger disappointment in terms of my actual use of Gran Turismo than any of the other "omissions", such as tracks and cars/premium cars.

2 player mode is, I think, an important part of Gran Turismo- and being able to watch back your race, to see if a move really was a bit dirty, or just to enjoy the close finish, has always been as entertaining as the actual split-screen racing itself, imo.

I was mildly annoyed when GT5:P did not let the viewers watch the replay with full graphic effect in one (non-split) screen. I was also a little surprised that I could not save the replay.

This will be a serious step backwards for the series, imo, if the information is accurate.

EDIT: PD Got their act together at last! It makes a huge difference to the enjoyment of split-screen two player mode! :)

Thank god there is no replay function in Splitscreen mode. I dont think i ll use that feature. If you like yes thats missing thing.

Personally I won't be using split screen as there will be 4 PS3's with GT5 in my house but yeah it does suck a little.

You say it as if there was something bad about having it? Like not having it is saving you from some horrible fate... is this the case? Is there something about split screen replays that hurt you?

What sucks more is that those 4 PS3s will have to be fighting for your upload bandwidth to PSN since there is apparently no LAN play.... and should your internet go out for a while... nothing...

But who knows... perhaps once you get to level 30 SS replays get unlocked and level 40 LAN play ;)

Another step back indeed. Both GT4 and GT5P were poor for split screen players as well, it's a shame that what was once the foundation of so much fun in GT games has ended up in such a bad way.

I'm really upset about this. Enthusia always gave great replays of 2P races, and I was really hoping I could do the same in GT5. Instead they go backwards and won't even let us watch the replays. These things make me feel even worse because there's little chance that they'll patch this in.

Thank god there is no replay function in Splitscreen mode.
I'm glad you're happy.

Yes am surprised why this was done, I use it alot with friends I do not think that the replay is a function you would unlock later either. I also thought there would be more camera angles this time round for 2P mode. Ah well guess PD must have their reasons.

I don't mind too much, have 50MB fibre optic broaband, also there will be a huge single player game to play when I have no access! Wasn't a problem in GT4 :)

Guess it helps, all in all tonnes of positives massively outweigh negatives so why dwell on them? A depressing way to live!

I love the idea of 8-16 player human races online but I have to agree SS races are a ton of fun too... there is something to be said about having the other person right there with you in the same room and battling it out... even better to have a room full of people taking turns so you get your own spectator crowds!

I remember we used to rock 4 player SS RalliSport Challenge and despite the massive graphical hit, it was AWESOME!!!

I hate you! :P

Haha, spread the love man, look forward to racing online with you :)

The reason for omission is fairly obvious i think. Having a split screen replay would require the console to render two replays at once, when we already know that one replay is pushing the console to it's limits. I agree with the decision to remove this feature ONLY if it means that the graphic quality of the split screen mode is on-par with the single player which is what Amar seems to suggest. Why would you cripple the split screen mode to offer a replay feature that many skip anyway. I enjoy watching replays sometimes but when you play split screen with friends, watching the replay is a rare occurrence.

I was actually secretly hoping that PD would take the route of 4 player battle with GT5 upping it from 2 player with how it is on the PS3 now and everybody jumping on the whole 50" screens. Guess it will be on my wish list. It was great on BLUR the racing game.

Wouldn't it' make sense then to render the SS replays without the additional replay effects? I mean if the game can render two races live on screen for SS play, surely it can do the same again for replay mode, just turn off the fancy effects that chew up resources.

Is that how replays work in Gran Turismo? I assumed it was simply storage of controller inputs.

Despite what Amar says, I'm sure the graphics won't be on a par with the single player experience (hence the no-cockpit view stuff). There's no point in them being so detailed, since by its very nature, each screen is displaying a much lower resolution.

This is a fair point, however the replay mode extras may be deemed necessary by PD to 'cover up' some shortcomings in the graphics engine. Of course i'm only speculating here but it may be the case that while playing you don't notice certain things (eg shadow glitching) that during a replay would stick out much more to the viewer. It is a shame that the split screen replay is gone. Maybe they could have incorporated a replay mode that was of the two player race but was only 1 replay where you could switch between the target cars, rather than two replays at once in split screen

I think there's some confusion here. As far as I know, it's not watching replays split into two parts of the screen that is missing. It's the ability to watch the replay of any split screen race at all. As in, if you race your friend in two player battle, you won't be able to watch the replay. At all.

Please correct me if I am wrong though!

Nope that is 100% correct, no replays in 2P mode at all. Saw this earlier on the stream by TaxiGamer. After they finished the race, screen went blank for abit then went back to normal menu.

So no replay in 2 player split screen at all? That does kinda suck, in previous games IIRC it would focus on whatever car is in the lead, would have though that's not a big pull on resources. Then when one car takes the other, you would obviously see this take place.

This makes me wonder if there is any option to watch a replay of the AI cars, as i've noticed this is becoming less commonplace in driving games nowadays. Always seems a shame as sometimes the AI cars make some huge mistake, but you have no clue what it was.

Can anyone confirm on both of these points? Don't want to read Amar's thread for fear of spoilers, i'm being good :)

I'm not to bothered about not having a replay option in splitscreen, but is it possible to race with a few other AI drivers in splitscreen?

That is also something I wished for this time round but never happened. Not complaining but would have been nice; 4 player split screen + AI + More camera angles.

Although I rarely ever drive split screen, I do feel bad for those users affected. But times are changing, and unfortunately its things like split screen that gets removed from games, so feel grateful that its still here in some form.
