I have no idea why, but iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, anything else I try to play audio on has stopped working. I press play, nothing happens, it stays at 00.00 seconds.

It can't be that, everything else works, & when I load a track into Audacity it works, just not on my media players. The mystery is that I didn't do anything, it just stopped & hasn't worked since.

Ok... well, is it a file? or is you computer just not playing any video at all period?

Try a CD or Dvd?

edit: Oh wait... how did I miss that, you're trying to get music to play.

I'd still try a CD to see if it plays, that way you know it's not the files and it is your computer.

is there an error message or does it just not play at all?

Did you delete or add anything Audio related (software/hardware)?

No error message, it just doesn't play. I've got a 2.1 system installed today, but it was doing this before it was installed.

IIRC you use Vista?

It might be software related, but I suggest reinstalling the sound drivers anyway. Go to the Control Panel > Device Manager, double click on your sound device, then go to the Driver tab. Try the update driver option first and see if it finds anything. If not, uninstall it and reinstall the driver.

I haven't installed any software for the new system, just plug in & go, it's the programs, all other sound works. Yes I use Vista.

Try Windows Media Player Classic. Its just another version of the first Media Player ever made by Windows, which has been revamped in a way. Its straight forward as well, and you can play just about anything on it too. Its not as dumb as some new media players either, and its a small file. It has TONNES of features aswell, which i have never seen in new players  I have it, and it is simply AWESOME 👍

On a vaguely related note (not threadworthy) I used to be able to right-click on a music files and press "Enqueue in Winamp" but that option is gone now and I don't know why. Anyone have any ideas? It was very useful.

It's either not associated anymore with the music file you want to play or enqueued isn't checked in your menu.

I remember this happened to a girl that I knew, when you click on any song in iTunes it stays at 0.00...... its most likely that your soundcard driver has been corrupted.

A simple test (which I did with hers) is to make a new account in windows and install iTunes on it and put some songs on..... if it works there (which it did when I did it) then you have to go back into your normal account and reinstall your soundcard drivers.

Sometimes other programs which use the soundcard which may be causing conflict... this is why it can corrupt. A new account has no other stuff on it so its a great place for testing.

Computer drivers are universal on a system. He's able to hear via Audacity, which should fold that assumption.

Quick questions:

~Is this a prebuilt, or custom?
~When did these problems start occurring?

Also, go to run and type in DXDiag and find what you can under the sounds tab.

No, I meant that something installed on his account in particular could be blocking or have messed up the use of the driver. Yes drivers are universal but on a new account there is nothing installed which could possibly conflict with it so its just a 'fresh copy'....

Ah ok, I get your post now. All settings and options are stored on a user file. If it gets deleted while on another account, say bye bye to most of the things you had.
