Hi all. This is my first post as a member. I have a love/hate relationship with GT5. Mostly HATE. I haven't really loved it since it was brand new and everything was sparkly innocent and rewardingly competitive. However, I just raced my first Endurance event. The 60 laps at Grand Valley Speedway. After 2 hours and 59 laps, with an almost empty tank of gas and bald tires- I was prepared for a challenging last 2 laps. Halfway through the 59th lap the game pops up with a notice offering to download the latest update.. with my car running uncontrollably in the background! I tried pressing the start button to pause the race and deal with this ridiculous message.. which did not work. My car slammed head on into a wall until I declined the update and the race resumed- with me losing my 1:17 lead down to 14 seconds. Having to back up, and start the turn over in 1st gear, 2nd place was on my ass with fresh tires. Needless to say by the end of the last lap, he passes me and I get 2nd place, a measely 70,000 credits and newly punched hole in my wall.

This game is not fun. I have fun perfecting tunings and lap times. I have fun racing competitively. I have fun learning and getting better. I purposely used a Japanese production car (the FT-86 concept) for the race, for fun's sake. All I was rewarded with was a terribly timed glitch, a wasted 2 hours 15 minutes, and a feeling inside me that I'm embarrassed of.

Maybe I'm not hardcore enough, and everybody on this forum will just make fun of me, but this game is not designed to be enjoyable. Why can't we save mid-endurance race? Why can't we practice or even qualify in the championships? Why are credits and good cars so hard to come by? Why do you have to download an update every 2 months for the game to even be playable? Why did they make a game so obviously worse than GT4?

Unless somebody can convince me I'm a pussy, my copy is getting pissed on, covered in spray paint, and thrown at my fat, annoying neighbors..

Forza 4 is worth getting a replacement Fanatec every 2 months.

I know people will rage at this for being a rant, and rage at me too for typing this, but I have to admit I agree with a lot of this...it's like trying to play an FPS on the highest difficulty at times. The game just seems impossible to play and pointless to even try to have fun with it. I mean, take the licenses - I am not some pro wheel user, or a controller driving goddess, and as such I have no chance at completing PD's ridiculous challenges with anything more than a measley bronze and a feeling of utter uselessness....this game actually depresses me, when it decides that I must be the person who can only scrape a bronze.

All I have to say is I salute you for writing this. It feels good to know I'm not alone when this game frustrates the 🤬 out of me. It takes effort to put mine in the console now, and persuasion from friends too...
And I'm considering getting Forza 4 too, since I started Forza 3 again last week

I guess my internet connection sucks worse. I tried downloading the newest update (ironically, the same one it prompted me to download mid-race) and I left it go 12 1/2 hours on tuesday, with it only getting to 25%. I guess this update would have given me the ability to save mid-race. I just HATE HATE HATE everything.

And please, flame on. I'm a NEWB here.

Trust me, I've been annoyed by several things in gt5... The only reason I play it so much is that my xbox died on me and i need a new one to play Forza.

I don't even have GT5 yet but I understand your frustration just fine. We barely even have enough spare bandwidth to be able to download 1GB in one hit, and even if we did it would probably take 24 hours. I want GT5 but really hope I wouldn't have to do that too often and that the game does let you play at least until we have "saved up" enough spare quota near the rollover date. Otherwise that is grossly unfair on so many of us with 20th century internet. :(

The update it is promting me with is 1200 something Meg, so just over 1 GB. It's not the first update either, I've downlaoded a few others. I usually play with my internet disconnected because it asks if I want to sign in or download the update so incessantly.

With a new copy of the game it will take you a week to download all the updates at that internet speed :( All up I think there has been close to 4Gb of updates since launch, and as far as i'm aware they are all unique and each one needs to be downloaded prior to the next one in order to install correctly. The latest update spec 2.0 was 1.2Gb alone.

I'm almost positive it was a GT5 update, but it was the 2nd to last lap of a very important race to me.. so I wasn't paying much attention to that.

edit- I wasn't signed into the network either, so chances are it wasn't psn

As far as I know, GT5 only notices you about updates to the game when you boot it up, not while your playing it.

If you were offline, nothing should have notified you. Even so, I don't recall ever hearing of the update box appearing mid-race... news to me

That's what I thought too. Perhaps it was God himself playing terrible tricks on me. It honestly seemed out of spite, I mean.. who am I to win an endurance race with good planning and no major complications or ****ups as a driver?

I've never heard of this happening, surprised it happened if you weren't even on PSN, which by the way I think is lovely how the game asks you like 3 more times inside minutes if you'd like to sign in after you've said no.

A lot of us can feel you on the "not having fun" part though. Sometimes it's not just the difficulty, but also horrid game design. Like the game not pausing when you go into the XMB, online I understand, but while playing offline, really? Or like when you're recharging your controller, if for some reason the power supply is interrupted it desync's the controller... but GT5 keeps on truckin', while every other game pauses and tells you to reconnect the controller.

Another doozie is how you have a confirmation on when you click on restart race, but nothing if you click on exit...

Your not a pussy, the best GT5 driver didnt turn the game on and instantly became the dogs proverbials, GT5 has a huge learning curve and an awsome engine, you just got caught out by one of its many inconsistancies (even though ive never seen/heard of that one) which unfortunatly stop a truly great game being epic, what i would say though is GT5s true brilliance doesnt lie in offline mode, you need to play it online and further more if you really want to milk it to get the best from it then join a club/league as open rooms are a lottery, A good League is where GT5 comes alive, there are a lot of leagues out there to join, you shouldnt have trouble finding one in your time zone that suits you and if you find the right one youll have a like minded group of guys racing the kinda stuff you like and youll see what i mean.

I find it both challenging and enjoyable. It's a far cry from arcade racers, but you can still enjoy it like arcade racers.

Why can't we save mid-endurance race?

I was under the impression that mid race saves were implemented in Spec 2.0. I could be wrong, I've very little interest in doing the endurance races, my life style doesn't afford me the time.

Why are credits and good cars so hard to come by?

I find both credits and cars are easy to come by. Use the Seasonal Events to earn Cr. I racked up Cr10mil over the last couple of days grinding the Euro Hot Hatch Event. The final race will grant you Cr400k in a little under 6 minutes. Cars are a little harder to come by, because you're reliant on them turning up in the UCD. However, if the car you're desperately wanting is under Cr1mil, you can always hit the Marketplace on these hallowed pages.

Frankly, I'd rather the game was constantly updated than left to fester.

Why did they make a game so obviously worse than GT4?

Really?? Let's be brutally honest, GT5 is far better than GT4. Fire up your PS2 and play them side by side. You'll see massive differences, all of them in favour of GT5.

Unless somebody can convince me I'm a pussy, my copy is getting pissed on, covered in spray paint, and thrown at my fat, annoying neighbors.

You're not a pussy, you're just pissed off with the game and that's perfectly fine. It happens to all of us at some point. I know I've rage-quit, gone off to shoot some mofos in the face and come back to it a few days later, feeling fresh.

This game is exactly what you make of it, it can be everything or nothing...

Peace out,
{Cy}

If you were not signed into the network, the game cannot let you know when a new update is needed. The game will only update on start up. The scenario you have created is not possible.

Go back to Forza Planet and stop trolling.

I had trouble with the licenses when I first started the game, too. I found that after playing the game for the last year or so, I can now go back and do better on the challenges. The first time through, I used driving aids and these can really slow you down, especially traction control and ASM.

I've since gone back with my DS3 and have been slowly turning my bronzes into golds by doing the license challenges with only ABS set to 1. I've actually now completed all gold in a few of them and every now and then, I just jump in and do a couple more. My main point is that even though they are initially hard, later game patches and trying them with reduced or no driving aids, really helped me do better on the license tests. 👍

Now, those Vettel challenges are a different story. :grumpy:

To the original poster, that is a tough loss. Very strange GT5 update behavior, too. I hope that never happens to me. I'm not sure I'll ever complete all of the A-spec endurances, but I'd hate to drive for almost three hours and then have to do it again. I hope that is the last time that it ever happens to you, too.

I've been playing GT5 everyday since I bought it over a year ago and have yet to be "Pissed off" by it.

Even when connected to the PSN network I have NEVER seen an update message suddenly appear telling me that a update is needed.

The simpleton that wrote the code to pop up a message like that in the middle of a race should be dope slapped. Dumb move, PD.

To everybody who is saying you have to be logged in to be prompted updates, I simply have to argue. Every time I boot up I'm asked to download the 2.0 update, after declining I'm asked twice to login, which I also decline, because it then tells me I have to download the spec 2.0 to login. WITHOUT the spec 2.0 update, you can't login. So I was definately not logged in.

And to all the people that think I'm crazy because this has never happened to them.. they must not be playing with the same network/update situation as I was. It never happened to me before either, but trust me it happened this time.

And may I ask why you declined the Spec II update?

Think about, if someone bought a computer 10 years ago and refused to update it, odds are not every program today will run flawlessly with Windows 95. You need to update whenever possible...

My internet is terrible. I already tried a few times to download it. At 12.5 hours it only reached 25%.

I admit that I should have the internet to the playstation OFF, to avoid these situations and having to constantly deny prompts. I'm sorry about the rant last night, but as you might understand I was overwhelmed with pure rage at a GAME. I didn't know who else to vent to. So, thanks to those that believe me and showed some emotion or sympathy.

Is your PS3 hooked up to the internet via Ethernet or wireless? Ethernet is defiantly faster, so just until the update finishes, use that. Also you could take your PS3 to a friends house to update. Just because you have slow internet doesn't mean you can't update...

There are many new features that come with updates, download them whenever possible 👍

I'm in your corner Snake Whiskers...This same update notice happened to me months ago as I was negotiating some twisty bits in a 4hr Nurburgring race..The window that popped up blocked out almost the whole screen as I crashed wildly into the railings...I too, don't remember the nature of the update as I was deperately trying to shoo it away so that I could continue on with the race...It only cost me 30 or so seconds if I can recall...It was very annoying to say the least..
So there you go Snake Whiskers...I can confirm your experience completely!..👍 :)

Hey! Thank you! I'm glad it didn't screw you up too bad.

I'll try to get the update downloaded at a friends or something. Some of you must not realize how hard it is to find good internet out in the sticks.

I must have something all, all wrong. Euro Hot hatch is a level five amature 2 race event with a payoff of 7,000 CR a race for me. I get 14,000 for doing both races

Not the A-Spec event, the seasonal event, you must be connected to PSN in order to get access to the seasonal's though, so this may not help you if you can't get online
