Now I will buy an iPhone

I want a bumper more for comfort than anything. The reception thing really is not such a big deal when you look at the big picture. In all the ways I hold my phone, I have full bars. Only the awkward and uncomfortable deathgrip kills a few bars. I haven't had any drops of service though. The signal is just weakened. My only complaint is the lack of adobe flash support... Or perhaps the proliferation of flash on the web.

Here are some test shots from the iPhone 4.

No editing just rescaled for the forum.

Sweet! The 4 comes with new headphones that have volume controls on it. I didn't know that until today when I took them out of the box after putting my old phone up on ebay.

If anyone wants to buy my 3G, btw, PM me.

Funny you mentioned that - I also discovered the volume controller on the new headphones while preparing my old iPhone for eBay!

The camera on the iPhone4 is quite nice, I will give it that. Better handling of compression to JPEG than my EVO 4G at the moment.

However, when compared to the EVO 4G, the iPhone 4 just feels like a toy now. My room mate has an iPhone 4, and when ever I use it, I am just kind of surprised at how small it is, how cramped the keyboard feels, and how closed the system is. Took me all of 2 minutes to install a Beta of Swype meant for the hTC Droid Incredible onto my EVO, and it greatly speeds typing with one hand. Then you have the lack of dedicated buttons on the iPhone, while I get the Home, Menu, Back, and Search buttons. The Back button is amazing, since it will return you to other programs you were just in, which makes looking at a link from a mobile chat app quite easy.

Then you have the widgets, which make life much easier. And Apple still hasn't addressed the issue of notifications, and frankly, having them pop up over everything is just dated.

I'll finally be ordering an iPhone 4 next week and want to get a good quality front and back screen protector film. I'm considering the InvisibleShield Full Body Maximum Coverage film as I have it for my iPod but it doesn't have a completely smooth surface so I'm not sure I want that on the front of the phone. I've also heard the Power Support Crystal or Anti-Glare films are both good although they are very expensive so would only buy it if it was significantly better than other screen films.

Does anyone have any experience with these or any recommendations for other screen protector films?

Cheers

Neal

I've not had experience with those particular brands, but I have used both types of protective films on the front of my previous iPhones. The "crystal"/"anti-glare" films feel good on your fingertips, but I was really disappointed with the loss of screen clarity as everything gets a slightly grainy look. You won't know if a good clear film is on the screen, but I found it also has drawbacks - namely, the plastic is softer than the glass, and scratched very easily (YMMV with different brands) and had to be replaced often.

When the 3GS introduced the oleophobic screen, I gave up on screen protectors and haven't looked back. The olephobic coating makes it effortless to keep clean with a quick swipe on your shirt, and there's no scratches. With that said, if you're not going to have any other kind of case on your iPhone 4, I would recommend putting a film on the back to protect the glass from any grit it may come into contact with on surfaces that you may lay it down on. I use the Bumper Case, which holds the back of the phone a few millimeters up to prevent that sort of thing from happening. I've been very happy with the Bumper so far.

What is it like sliding the iPhone into your pocket with a bumper on? I'm still planning on getting one of these when I have the funds.

It's not as smooth as I would like, but it's definitely not as bad as a full-bodied silicone case, which I thought I wanted when I got my first-gen iPhone a few years ago until I quickly discovered the "pocket" issue. I had a problem with my 3GS (with just an Elago S2 case) falling slipping out of my short's pockets when sitting down, and now I'm glad I don't have to worry about that any more.

What you've unintentionally done there is found me the perfect new case for my 3G - I've been desperate to find a case that comes with a compatible dock adaptor thing, and you've just dropped one in my lap. Ta for that :p

I'm pretty much in love with my iPhone4 now and not just because it works where my 3G didn't. I haven't the foggiest idea what people where talking about with it dropping calls. The signal strength is quite a bit better on the 4 then it was with my 3G. The Retina display is pretty incredible and I love the camera on the phone too. The LED light on it is an awesome little flashlight too, especially when I'm working on a computer at work and need a light.

My only compliant is that I don't really like the multitasking that much since it will open up like 20 programs and keep them running. I don't need that.

I ended up going with a Griffin Technology's Reveal case for the phone until my free one from Apple gets here sometime in October.

Thanks Jordan. I'll be ordering the apple bumper once I get it although it looks like there may be a 5(ish) week wait on delivery. Maybe I'll just get a cheapo front and back screen protector until that arrives and go "naked" once it turns up although I do have a pathological fear of scratching the screen of something I have bought on a 2 year contract...I definitely need to get out of the habit of dropping my phone as much as I do at the moment!

BTW the invisibleshield films are made out of helicopter tape and is virtually unscratchable, the one on my ipod has been on for a few years and looks the same as when I fitted it. Only problem is it is slightly dimpled, although it's not really noticeable viewed straight on, and feels a bit tacky so probably won't be great great for sliding a finger across the touch screen.

Glad to be of help, other than the phone slipping out of my pocket a few times, it was the perfect case for me and you hardly know it's there. 👍

You don't have to worry too much about them eating up your resources since it's not "true" multitasking. Regardless, don't forget you can hold your finger on top of any app icon in the multitasking window and then tap it again to make sure you kill it.
