Given the interest in this challenge I think it's time for some basic ground rules.

Nurburgring Nordschleife - Practice Mode
100 horsepower (must finish the lap with 100 horsepower or less)
No SRF (this seems a no-brainer, but just in case anybody doesn't already know that)
ABS OK
Any other "aids" are OK but they'll just slow you down.

You can use the same car somebody else has already used, but I will only post times in the same car if they're faster than the previous time.

Please save your ghost replay. I may request you email it to me so I can video it and post it here. Not sure about this at the moment.

I will compile the list of cars and times this evening (hopefully).

Race Hard Tires

Race Soft Tires

Original Post:

This question occurred to me today at work. Would it be possible to break the 8 minute barrier at the Nurburgring Nordschleife with only 100hp?

Now this question is not completely out of the blue, as I have been working on a low hp tune for the 4 hour Nurburgring race.

As it turns out... Yes you can run under 8 minutes with only 100hp. And it was actually no challenge.

No glitches. No SRF. My first lap was 7'49.

I did use racing soft tires, but I think I could have done it with race hard tires. Undoubtedly some could do it on sport tires.

Oh, what car did I use? I bet some have guessed already.

Obviously, it is possible in a Caterham. The interesting question is how quick can you do it in a car that doesn't weigh a little less than Twiggy.

Well I did think of the Fireblade, but I went with the GSXR/4.

I don't think it's possible in any car that's not a tube chassis with some sheet metal around it. But then again, I've seen some people on this forum do things I didn't think were possible...

Sub 8? Are you sure you ran the full 4hour track and not just the north loop?
I'm must try for myself as this would be useful info for my favourite event.

Tried the Swift yesterday with 400PP and something like 198HP. It stands no chance of putting in that kind of lap time. It just doesn't have the guts for it. If you can manage a sub 8 lap in the Swift then my hat comes off to you.

I never said I ran the 4 hour track. I said I was working on a tune for the 4 hour race when I had the idea to try it. I've run 9'04 with the GSXR/4 on the 4 hour track at 120hp, and from there I got to wondering if I could break 8 minutes on the Nordschleife if I tuned it down to 100hp.

Wouldn't be surprised if a good driver couldn't get some of the Kei cars close to if not under 8 minutes with 100hp.
Currently running a challenge in the tuning forum that includes a category for fully tuned Kei cars. To get listed you have to get under 7:35. Fastest time so far is a 7:19 by a Copen, but several different cars have beat the challenge time. If anyone's interested here is the link.

right then...
i cant think of anything other the the suzuki gsx-r or the seven fireblade :S

I suppose those Keis in the Masters Challenge are on Racing Softs? That's incredible, if so.... But with just 100 hp, even taking the turns full-bore might not give you enough of an advantage... A 100 hp Kei won't be able to maintain any amount of speed going uphill... Hmmm... Gotta dig up the Midget to see...

We also have a FF category with a challenge time to beat of 6:35 so far only one driver with a Dodge SRT4 has beat that time. Figured with your user name you might be interested in showing us how its done.:sly:

Back in the Prologue days, when I was online more, I might have had some answer for that. Right now, given the shape I'm in... it'd be embarrassing.

You could think of it as exercise to get back in shape.:sly:
The challenges remain open and new ones will be added as I come up with new categories with good times. Check them out if you get a chance.

I've just added this as a new challenge for my
Wallbanger's Ring Masters Challenge (7/21/11)
Come check it out in the tuning forum. Offering prizes to those who beat the challenges. See the OP there for rules.

As Harvey Wallbanger always says...

I did it in a Lotus Elise'96.

7.59.932

After 2 hours and countless restarts and attempts. No problems getting under 8.10, but those last 10sec's are tough.

when documenting it, i saw that the hp has gone up to 102hp..(brand new car)

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFck

Still, i now know its doable.

transmission: 220kph
racing softs
15mm lower susp
stiffer damper (+3 front and rear)
(this tune is simple and good)

Pretty much "perfect" in my eyes, but some GT5-god could prob shave off 2-3 seconds.

Well I think it is easy, and maybe you can do it with a go cart XD they start of at 33 hp, so you can upgrade them. They are much lighter than Caterhams.

You can't upgrade a go-kart. Try lenghtening out the gear for all the straights but you will still probably be nowhere near.

We read it properly the first time. There's no need to threadjack. Put it in your sig.

Cappachino RM?

I tried it. Not saying it can't be done, but I can't get any speed in a straight line. Especially in the uphill sections.

I did it in a Lotus Elise'96.

I tip my hat to you sir. 👍

I'll call that confirmed on the Elise '96 and the GSXR/4. Possible on the Midget, Fiat 500, Fireblade and Cappuccino RM, but still need somebody to "do the deed" to prove it can be done.

Gave it a go in the G4 and I got SO close. 8'05

This car has so much "monkey motion" that I feel more like I'm herding it than driving it. I did a chassis restoration and chassis stiffening and it helped. But not enough. The car shakes, wiggles, yaws, and just plain misbehaves. And it feels like it needs a touch more speed on Dottinger.

I'm not done with it yet. The gearbox can be optimized and the suspension fine tuned.

I'll try a 111R for this, probably an RM; I'd imagine though on this track the '96 is that bit quicker at 100bhp, due to it weighing 75kg less but this has already been done :p.

I guess this is now my excuse to buy a 7th Elise :p.

got this crazy idea:

pick a "bigger" car with a decent motor with lots of torque (M3? etc) and detune it to 100hp. If the weight can be kept at 1000kg the extra torque might compensate.

I will give this a go.

I like this challenge.

I can take sreenshot of laptime, but how do i verify that the HP is max 100? u cant get screenshot of laptime and egine tuning in same frame.
If someone wants to they can just take 2 separate pic's and lie about the hp used to make the lap under 8min?

Anyways, im keeping it honest. And i hope the rest of you does as well.

nice thread!
how about the old mini, berlinette and such stuff?
I guess I will give it a try this evening...and let you know the results...

7:57.386 with the 111R, so it's quite possible :P. Not taken pictures or anything because honestly I'm not that bothered about 'fame' so to speak, just thought I'd let people know it's possible. Detuned to 100BHP after being RM'd, gearbox set to lowest MPH and then Final ratio'd up to 130MPH.
