Nurburgring Race Series, Week 12
Race Cars 200-350HP

For Voting Results See Post #2
For Race Results See Post #3

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING
THERE’S A
slight TWIST and a BONUS QUESTION!

This week we step up to cars in the 200-350HP category. This includes the JGTC 300 cars as well as most of the rally cars. So there are many fantastic cars available. This week will be the last week a FF cars is offered as there are none above this HP level. I had some difficulty narrowing the field down to just 5 cars so there are 6 on the voting block (the slight twist).

Most of the choices get just an oil change. If the BMW is selected we will boost the HP a little. This is where the bonus question comes in: Would you prefer a NA or TURBO engine upgrade to boost the power? NA3 takes the car from 274 to 343HP. T2 gives a boost to 348HP. So virtually no difference in the final HP value.

This week we’ll also be racing on R2 tires.

That said there will be 4 slots on the ballot. The first 3 will be for the car selections. Your top 3 choices, in order of preference, just like always. The 4th slot is for the engine upgrade, simply vote NA or TURBO.

On to the choices:

BMW 320i Touring Car

ASL ARTA Garaiya

RE Amemiya RX7

Citroen Xsara Rally Car

Renault Clio Race Car
Availability: Renault Dealership: Clio Trophy

Renault 5 Maxi Turbo
This car is slightly above this weeks HP range but too low for next week
Availability: Special Conditions, Normal, George V

No discussion of car selections but feel free to address the issue NA vs Turbo engine upgrades.
Voting deadline is Sunday, January 22, 2006, 9pm GMT (=4pm US EST). Oops. Send votes to me via PM.

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE YOUR OPINION ON NA vs. TURBO ENGINE UPGRADES

3. 11pts - BMW 320i Touring Car
2. 12pts - RE Amemiya RX7
1. 16pts - ASL Arta Garaiya

Not that it matters but the NA upgrade won by a margin of 7 to 2.

There's one car here that I would love to see win, though some folks may find it a bit of a handful on the 'ring. :trouble:

Tee hee, this is going to be interesting.

At least it will teach everyone to be smooth with their inputs. Otherwise you'll end up off the road backwards!

too bad we don't get the RX... that car is fantastic.
eh well... the asl is cute.

haha, I voted for turbo. who else was up for it? :)

I was hoping for a turbocharged Xsara. The Garaiya was my 3rd place pick.

Ohh no :ouch: , sounds like the return of the Lotus Elise motorsport :scared: , I'm still having nightmares about that week  .

I voted #1 for the RX7 but have put in a 2 laps (with R1 tires) with the ASL and really like this car. But I enjoyed the Elise too. Maybe my driving style just suits the MR cars? Which might prove to be a benefit because weeks 15 and 16 will most likely be MR cars...although the Gillette Vertigo will be offered one of those weeks (depending on HP).

I have been "playing" with the Yellowbird a bit...that RR layout certainly makes it a handful. Gotta be smoooooth with that car. Gas and brake modulation are critical. I don't know how you DS2 drivers are gonna get that thing around the track...but then again I have no idea how you're able to competitively get any car around the track with the DS2.

But I'm lookin' too far ahead. I need to figure out the cars for week 13.

ive never even driven the Garaiya, this should be interesting..

Ill probably opt for rear traction over understeer.

hmm.... i just noticed; since this one capped out @ 350hp, does that mean we gave the Altezza touring car a pass? :(

I was the other one hoping for the shhh sound.:) No worries though, should be fun without it.

Quite possibly so. I had thought that the lower level "LM" cars (Altezza, Mitsubishi FTO, RX7, S2000, etc.) were lower 400HP cars but maybe not. In my defense, I did ask if anybody had any favorites they wanted to see on the lists for voting purposes (see thread for Weeks 11 - 16) and did not receive even a single response. If the Altezza fits into the next grouping I'll put it up for voting.

I am tending to work with cars more toward the upper limits of the HP range but there is one for Week 12 that I'm planning to put on the list that will get a HP bump if selected. Week 12 is especially tough as both the DTM and JGTC 500 cars fit into this category. With an oil change we might be slightly above the 500HP upper end of the range (depending on final selection).

With so many choices in this category I was honestly intending to stay away from those "LM" cars as they were available in GT3 and where I'm in a pickle about narrowing down the list one criteria that may eliminate a car is if relative to another selection is the car a new one for GT4 compared to a car that was in GT3. And also I try to use "real" cars vs. PD "created" cars. Although I'm not familiar enough with most real life racing series to know which cars are "real" vs. "created" but the "Gran Turismo" slapped on the side vs a real life sponsor seems to be a dead give away.

I actually mapped out most of selections before we re-commenced the series but I'm open to suggestions. This week I've already decided to switch 2 of the 5 cars being offered and I'm not opposed to offering more than 5 cars if there's some input relative to favorites.

I've always wondered what "LM" stood for in the names of the cars. Anybody know?

Session 1. Early splits. These are with a totally stock car. NO oil. NO R2s. TCS/ASM. So these really are meaningless but I'll post them all the same just to get things moving.

T10=6'24.125

Last week the procedure of easing my way into the car's final configuration worked well, I thought. It allowed me to gradually get a feel for the car. Allowed me to easily see progress. And avoided the "wall" I seem to get to where I have 10+ restarts for every clean lap and only see marginal improvement. I think it helps me find the car's limits a little better.

My plans are:
Session 2. NO TCS/ASM
Session 3. Oil Change
Session 4. R2 tires
Session 5. Tranny "Trick". If I have time for 5 sessions. There's been enough discussion about it that I'm curious about it. And it seems that it's not a "cheat".

So far the car's stock settings seem to be OK

Ron,

"LM" stands for Le Mans
much like how an LMP car is a Le Mans Prototype.

oh, and no sweat on the Altezza... the ASL is actually significantly better (about 10 seconds a lap better). I'm amazed at how good that car is.
-----------------------------------------------

To get things going, i figured i'd get into the time game early this week... so here's a target for you:

T1: 41.753
T2: 1'14.293
T3: 1'41.456
T4: 2'29.303
T5: 3'06.244
T6: 3'33.285
T7: 4'20.223
T8: 4'59.497
T9: 5'19.751
T10: 5'58.614

Top end: 166mph

Tips:
Car is sooooo stickey, a good rule of thumb with this car is that you need to have courage on turn entry. Brake late and have faith that the car will take corners about 10mph faster than you think it can.
Also a fun thing is that this is the first car we've driven that can go foot-to-the-floor from bergwerk to the brake zone after klostertal. (aka, go full out until the corner before the karussell).
Another major point comes in the transmission: ignore the red-line and shift light. they're totally wrong. Looking at the peak hp (6k) and the power graph, you can see that it falls off quite quickly after the peak. And this is obvious when going wide open in 5th, then the car seems to stall out at 6700, then if you shift up it starts picking up speed again. So, to make your self much happier with the accelleration, shift @ 6500.
last pointer... the last two corners before the Hohe straight, don't lift... have faith and it will hold it flat-out.

Some very easy to drive settings:
(F/R)
Brakes: 4 / 3

Suspension:
. spring: 12.8 / 13.8
. ride: 85 / 85
. bound: 2 / 3
. rebound: 6 / 7
. camber: 2.4 / 1.0
. toe: 0 / +1
. stabilizer: 4 / 2

Transmission:
. Final 4.10
. Auto 14
. (if you change the final to 4.10 THEN do the auto 14, you'll get the right gearing)

Aids: None

DownForce: MAX

LSD:
. 10
. 60
. 10

(the ring loves a lock-diff, keeps the rear planted over the bouncy stuff, the softer rear sabilizer also helps in that regard)

Well I drove this little peach in the JTC Series 1, so how could I possibly pass up this combo? Sorry Kent, but I'll race until the end of February,a nd then I'll get out fo your space again.

This is a wonderful little car and I dare say that I'll not be able to do it justice.

@Koly, good to see you back. I guess I better go find my "A" game.

@Dr Watson, I thought LM stood for Le Mans but for some reason it didn't seem to make sense with the type of GT3 and GT4 cars that had the abbreviation in their name. I suppose I've always considered cars like the GT40, etc as "Le Mans" cars. But I really don't know squat about Le Mans racing. BTW which course is the real 24hr Le Mans race run on? Isn't it one of the Sarthe tracks (I or II)? Maybe it's not in GT4?

The real Le Mans 24hr (24 Heures du mans) is run on the Sarthe circuit in the town of Le Mans and is indeed in GT4, its the one with the Kinks in the main straight (Sarthe circuit 1 i think) the one without the kinks is how the circuit used to be when the LMPs that we use in GT4 were racing there....

I like doing that, too. I get the car and take it right to the track for 50-80 miles before doing the oil and tire change. Then I drive some more before going back for any other upgrades.

Picked up my Toca Race Driver 3 PS2 Demo Disc last night (free with a reserve on the game at Gamestop) and haven't had a chance to take it out of the wrapper yet :grumpy: and probably won't be able to until this weekend (hopefully).

Athough *cough*, *hack*, *wheez*, *sneeze* I am begining to feel a little sick...maybe I won't be able to make it into work tomorrow....

Yep Sarthe 1 is the current configuration of the 24hr circuit, GT4 cars that would have raced on the current (Sarthe 1) would be the likes of the Bentley Speed 8, Audi R8, Pescys, etc. Basically any LMP car from 1990 onwards, as 1990 was the year the chicanes were added to the Mulsanne Straight (actually the correct name is the Hunaudieres Straight, Mulsanne is the name of the kink and corner at the end of the straight). Minor changes were made in 2001, and its the 2001 circuit that actually apears in GT4 as Sarthe 1.

The Sarthe 2 circuit in GT4 is a version that has never existed, as it simply the current circuit without the chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight. It is however closest to the track layout used between 1987 and 1989.

For more info on the various layouts go to Racingcircuits.net and do a search for Circuit de la Sarthe, you can then see all the layouts across the years. Its also a great site for track layouts of just about any circuit in the world, ever. Worth a bookmark.

Sorry for the off-topic

Ahhh coincidence :)

I'm just doing my last endurance race on Sarthe 1, about 16 hours in, done about 3 hours myself and Speccy has handled the rest, nice lead he's cruising around on 2 and pulling away 👍.

Yes that "straight" is crazed, never forget seeing the Merc lift off there and head up into the trees very scary stuff, brown trouser time indeed.

Steve

wasn't that CLR so unstable they flipped 3 of them that weekend? (2 in practice iirc)

Session 2: T10 = 6'22.405 (-1.720), NO TCS/ASM, 92 miles
Session 3: T10 = 6'20.174 (-2.231), Oil Change, 106 miles
Session 4: w/ R2s

Didn't push to the limit...I don't need to "learn" bad habits (wrong braking points, etc). Looks like I need to find about 12s somewhere to maintain about a 10s differential to Dr Watson (which is usually where I finish). I can't imagine the R2s will make that much difference? Still running stock settings. I will probably give the good doctor's a go and see what I think.

EDIT:
Session 4: T10 = 6'09.364 (-10.810), w/ R2s, 185 miles

Wow. The tires make a signficant difference but I also put more time in with this configuration and I'm close to my limit. Now I get to try Dr Watson's setup and the tranny thing. I love this car. Can't believe I've never driven it before this event. Maybe MR cars really do suit my driving style?

EDIT 2:
Session 5: T10 = 6'07.578 (-1.786), Dr Watson's settings, 294 miles

I tried the tranny thing too but Dr Watson's settings were superior 👍 . Maybe I didn't find the final drive "sweet spot"? I'm "well chuffed" that I found that 12s I was hoping for to maintain my normal differential to Dr Watson...of course he's probably trimmed a few seconds off his time? Regardless, I'm done for the week. Now I can mess with TOCA Race Driver 3 (Demo) a bit :) .

I have a few minutes to read the posts, and i commend Dr Watson on his early T time.

I managed 1 lap on this combo this week so far, with no obvious signs of getting more time to improve.

As Dr said, the trick is in lengthening the gearbox, and trusting the car round the turns...

I havent had the guts to take angstkurve flat though, something to do with driving so many cars on N2's recently.... but i did manage this after a small amount of tuning, and 1 complete lap:

T10: 5'59.702

Loox like ill have to go back to it if i want to be in the top three.

Good luck everyone, and hopefully i'll see you in the boards again soon.

Once again Dave, thanx for that dvd!

:irked:👍
