Obvious shortcomings in GT5 (even after 2.0)

Can anyone explain (or at least try to rationalize) why the following features aren't included in GT5? They all seem like no-brainers to me...and...GUH...I keep hoping they'll materialize in some update, but of course they never do.

1. Any of the Reasonably-Priced Cars from Top Gear. They have the Top Gear partership / content license -- where's my Liana, Lacetti, or C'eed?

2. Standing starts on the Top Gear Test Track. All of the events on Top Gear are always standing starts. Some of the GT5 License Tests are standing start (so, obviously they have the "Standing Start Technology"). Why can't I drive a timed, standing-start lap around the Test Track?

3. Celebrity Leaderboards from Top Gear. If you combine 1 and 2, and let us drive the Reasonably-Priced Cars in timed, standing-start laps on the Test Track, then it would be cool to see how we ranked against the "Stars" who have appeared on the show. Am I faster than Jay Kay, or only the "Well-Spoken Man"?

4. The Stig's Power-Lap Times. Similar to #3, it would be nice to drive a standing-start lap in an exotic car, and see how that time stacked up against the Power-Lap rankings.

And lastly (this one's not Top Gear related)...

5. On-line leaderboards for Time Trial lap times. Prologue had this, where did it go? Did the volume of storage become too much, since the number of cars and tracks in GT5 is vastly greater than that in GTP? But isn't storage cheap now anyway?

1000 cars
71 tracks
1000 times per car/track combination
50 bytes per record

1000 * 71 * 1000 * 50 = 3.5 GB. This isn't anywhere near the database size limit of either MSSQLServer (524 Petabytes) or PostgreSQL (32 TB for one table).

Has anyone else been missing these things? Are these not obvious to everyone else? Has anyone heard a reason why these things aren't included?

I'm so with you on point 5! I didn't have to do an excel for my practice times-_-

Talk about beating a dead horse.

Top Gear is finished. Forget about it. Andy wilman and Jezza are in the forza camp courtesy of MS Cash. Polyphony can't do anything about it. It's gone. Time to move on

1 - Went to Forza.

2 - Same with other tracks.

3 - Would only work in UK

4 - See Forza

5 - Join the club of people asking...

Huh???

Not fussed over the top gear stuff you mentioned and have no clue why it has been left out but i do miss the leaderboards from Prologue!

I don't see how 1, 3 or 4 are "obvious shortcomings." Complaining about #1 in particular based on the reasoning you gave just shows that you don't know what having the Top Gear licence entails/entailed.

The other two I'd agree with, though. #5 particularly, because that is an advertised feature for the game that still hasn't been implemented.

No.3 would work with anyone who's vaguely familiar with top gear. If you don't get that, then you don't get the test track...

Because Top Gear isn't the arbiter of all things car-related. Celebrity power laps and the Stig times aren't important enough.

Sorry if this has been well hashed out in the forums before -- a quick search for "standing start" and "leaderboards" didn't return anything obvious.

Sure, I don't know what exactly having the Top Gear license entails -- but to me, having the Test Track present in the game at all *implies* 1 - 4.

I'll admit to ignoring the Forza world for the most part. I checked in around FM2, and wasn't impressed. Besides, I'm invested in the GT world with a PS3 and G25. And while I also have an X360, I'm not about to bother with a compatible wheel -- and I'm not very good driving with my thumbs.

I might have heard some rumblings about Top Gear related to the Forza franchise, but didn't expect that meant the death of their involvement with GT5. If that's the case, then that's too bad, 'cause I think the partnership was never given a proper chance to get off the ground and yield good dividends for the parties involved. :(

PD could do Star in a Reasonably Priced Car events with the Top Gear licence, but they would still need to get a licence for the cars themselves from the manufacturers.

There are alot more important things wrong with GT5 than to worry what PD should/could have done with said licences.

I was intrigued by the title but then laughed at the post.

For Polyphony Digital and Sony, there’s more to worry about than technical capabilities.

Im very familiar with top gear (bbcamerica). But i think a leaderboard with online top times would work a lot better.

1. Forza
2. Forza
3. Forza
4. Forza
5. Leaderboards aren't there because PD can't fix track glitches thus we have seasonal Time Trails

I know this is a stupid dead horse, and I don't know why I am responding, but....

1) The Liana, Lacetti, and C'eed are not licensed by Top Gear or the BBC. As everyone else has pointed out, Top Gear has moved on to a product that appears to be catering more to the driver than to the paint chip sniffing Kaz fanbois.

2) You can do standing starts. I do them all the time. There are actually several different ways to do it. I just run a one-lap race so I can save the replay.

3) Wow. Really?

4) You... uhm... you can do that. It is called the interwebs.

5) I have no idea what you are on about. There are seasonal time trails that have online leaderboards. You can see everyone, or you can filter it just by people on your friend list.

Really? You know that the BBC has violated the terms of their license? That is huge news. How come it is not all over the papers?

Not to mention have permission to use a celebrities name in the game.

Can anyone really see Tom Cruise's lawyers letting PD use his name without permission?

No Grid lines I guess.

The updates were free none of things you mentioned are required, may be leaderboards. I think they will provide more support for GT5 though but don't expect much.

Didnt Forza buy out the exclusive rights of all things Top Gear?

unless I'm mistakin', dont even think about it. But we'll be fine either way 👍

Most of your issues revolve around Top Gear, to be honest Top Gear measures very low on many peoples care factor scale. There are bigger and better things in the world of cars and motorsport, things that are not in GT5.

Is that also a reason standing starts are not in? NO. So get them in PD!

forget the lack of KIA in GT5, the most obvious shortcoming for me of spec 2, was being able to get rid of that damn annoying red gear change indicator and remove all the HUD clutter WITHOUT removing the speedo and rev counter.

Pleeeease Kaz Pleeease !

These aren't even shortcomings. You can drive any car in the game on top gear. You even get a lap timer.

Everyone gets to compete in brand new seasonal time trials every week. You and all your friends can set a lap with whatever cars are interesting and see how they measure up. Why are people asking for something already there? A "leader board" with no regulations for a static course is meaningless. Fastest car is fastest car. 20 kilo springs at all four corners always wins. Who cares?

OPer should be banned for coming to GTP to complain about GT5.

Seasonal time trials are no good because tuning is allowed. Apart from the top gear SLS one, which they has to pull because of cutters

Errrm, maybe this is obvious only to me but if you want to do a a standing start, simply come to a stop just before you cross the start/finish line.... then put your foot down, cross the line and hey presto, the lap timer for that lap starts. 👍
