"Obvious shortcomings"..... are you frickin' serious? These complaint threads have just hit a ridiculous new low. Oh yeah...not being able to compare my lap times against the likes of Simon Cowell and Chef Ramsey is just KILLING my enjoyment of GT5! Hey, I like Top Gear, too, but.... really?
It wasn't my intent to start a new complaint thread. Honestly, I was looking for some explanation or rationalization of why some of these things are missing. I got a few (thanks!), but I'm surprised at the overall backlash.
Errrm, maybe this is obvious only to me but if you want to do a a standing start, simply come to a stop just before you cross the start/finish line.... then put your foot down, cross the line and hey presto, the lap timer for that lap starts. 👍
True. But I think that making it a real, properly supported mode/event could make it much better (faster resets, and remembering your previous best, for example).
1) The Liana, Lacetti, and C'eed are not licensed by Top Gear or the BBC.
That's a good point -- of course the cars would have to be licensed from the manufacturers. Still seems like PDI would have tried to get at least ONE of them.
Not to mention have permission to use a celebrities name in the game.
Interesting -- I hadn't considered this angle. I'm not sure how this would play out; can a celebrity really control the use of their name in this way? IANAL, but I would be surprised. Especially after they appeared as guests on the show. But maybe they really did grant a release to the show that covers use only in the context of the show...
4) You... uhm... you can do that. It is called the
interwebs.
Yes, I know the Power Lap times are available on the web, and I could look them up myself. But should I have to? Doesn't this fall along the same lines of people having to maintain their own spreadsheets for best lap times?
And perhaps more to the point, didn't PDI and Top Gear miss an opportunity for strong cross-branding?
The world doesn't revolve around Top Gear. Just get over it. Watch some Best Motoring (International) instead.
Most of your issues revolve around Top Gear, to be honest Top Gear measures very low on many peoples care factor scale. There are bigger and better things in the world of cars and motorsport, things that are not in GT5.
Some IRL friends and I are fans of Top Gear. So sue me. We were all excited before GT5 was released to hear the news about the TG license, and were then similarly disappointed at the limited scope of the tie-in features.
I would think that any other fan of Top Gear would jump at the chance to try and post a lap in the Reasonably-Priced Car in-real-life. And barring that, isn't Gran Turismo the next best thing?
OPer should be banned for coming to GTP to complain about GT5.
At least a tempban. There are too many complaint threads as it is, just pick one of those if you feel the need to complain. We don't need any more complaint threads.
Really? I came to GTP looking for intelligent discussion, insight and answers because this is the largest, most in-the-know GT fan community I've found on-line. It's inconvenient that my interests don't exactly align with yours. No need to ban me, I probably won't post again -- and if I do, I'll use a more appropriate subject to warn you beforehand ("Top Gear / GT Fan Boi GT5 Wish List - Nothing To See Here, Move Along").
As far as leaderboards are concerned, yeah, in theory, they'd be cool, but in reality they'd probably be populated by corner-cutting cheaters in detuned R390s anyway, so I really don't care about that either.
As far as I can recall, the Leaderboards in GT5P were Per-Car-Per-Track. So all of the detuned R390s should be confined to the R390 leaderboards.
