I had a Taurus and a Lumina for driver's ed cars. And I learned on the family Volvo as well.

Yet I'm a fan of VWs, Benzes and Subarus. Maybe if the car you learn to drive on is rubbish you learn to not like them?
Is it possible to not be a fan of VWs, Benzes and Subarus?

I think you partly misunderstand - they stay with the same marque, they don't necessarily buy a brand new version of the very car they learned in. My Fiesta was bought for around £3.5k, not the £8k ish the car cost brand new. And although my next car won't be a brand new Ford, I am now a fan of the marque whereas I'd been pretty apathetic before. I can see where they're coming from with the 70% figure.

I still don't. You probably bought a Fiesta that was near-identical to the car you learned in, which was a logical decision. They drive pretty much the same, you know where all the controls are, yada yada.

But that's not really the case at the moment. To get anything that feels like a Corsa D, you're gonna have to buy a Corsa D. Corsa Bs and Cs are going to feel totally different to drive (innate cruminess aside), so to me that sounds more like 'I want to buy a Vauxhall Corsa' than 'I want to buy my BSM car'. And my guess is that the Corsa-buying trend will most probably carry on LONG beyond its departure from BSM.

Hell, the AA driving schools have used Ford Foci for years and still seemingly nobody buys one as their first car. My point is, I don't think BSM's figures are entirely accurate - I think they just accentuate already existing trends.

I'd think between learning in a Corsa D and then going out and buying a Corsa C or even B you're not going to feel too much difference. At low speeds at least one bland city car is going to feel much the same as any other. Again, it wouldn't surprise me if someone who learned in a Corsa went out and bought a Corsa, even if they plumped for an older model.

And as I said, I expect the more realistic take on that figure would be that people go out and buy from the same marque rather than an identical car.

By the way - the figures are FIAT's, not BSM's ;)

Perhaps forza2.0 was right about them after all...
