The Ogle SX1000 was introduced in December 1961, and caused a stir in the British motor industry. It was based on an Austin Mini 1000, of which it used the floorpan, inner wings, engine, gearbox, suspension and steering. The body was removed and replaced with a fantastic looking fibreglass bodyshell. It was quite an expensive operation, as the customer had to order a brand new Mini, which was then converted by David Ogle and his team into an SX1000. The conversion did cost as much as the new price of the donor car, and despite the sexy looks only 66 examples were constructed by Ogle Design, and they lost money on each of them.

The appearance of this small sports coupé is fantastic, and fit and finish is of a very high level for a 1962 fibreglass car. Inside there is a nice dashboard fitted with both Smiths and Jaeger gauges, and also the original bucket seats are still in the car. Because of the lightweight body, it is a very nimble car with swift acceleration and great roadholding. It even feels more comfortable then a standard Mini, probably because the lack of weight on the rear wheels.

It is very rare, as only 39 examples are known to still exist today. It is a proper coachbuilt Mini, and much rarer then a Mk1 Mini Cooper S. It can be used for competition, and it is a well accepted entrant for many Concours d'Elegance around the world. It is a beautifully designed car with good proportions for its size, and in fact it needs to be seen in real to fully appreciate the looks. If you want something special and affordable, then this Ogle is something to consider. Don't wait too long, as these cars do rarely come on the public market, and certainly not in this good condition.
