Ok, where the hell did my disk drive go?

I have a rather serious problem.

My disk drive is gone.

When I go into "My computer", it only has my C: drive, and floppy drive (which I never use anyway, why the hell couldn't that one have dissapeared?!), my Logitech Pictures, and Control Panel. Does anyone have ANY idea where it might've gone? I'm running on Windows ME, with a P4S8X-X mobo if it helps.

I know a bit about the connectng wires and jumping and all that, and I thought it was because I got it rigged alongside a chassis fan, but I put it back to it's old connection and the disk drive was still gone.

Oh, and I've tried Run -> M: and Run -> D: , and my AutoRun doesn't work either.

I take it your OS is running off the C: drive right (because eitherwise windows wouldnt load if it was on the missing HDD) .......and that you have a missing drive, somthing like drive D:, E: etc.....

The only thing that I can think off is that some cables have come loose in your case.......maybe the power supply or the ATA cable to the HDD.

.....or it could be that the swing arm motor has died (the data would still be retreveable im sure).

You could try and install the missing HDD physically into another computer to see if it shows up.....then you will know if its your computer or the drive

......or maybe it could be a windows software issue.....maybe somthing is corrupted.....try system restore to a point when the drive was there......see if it helps.....

It could also be possible that your 'slave' drive ( the missing one ) might need its own bios software, i know my 120gb EIDE drive needs me to install a small bios utility before its shown in windows.
 
do you mean your CD drive? if so try a different IDE cable, or see if you have the jumper set correctly. one of ours only works if you set it as the master, if you put it as slave it throws a hissy fit and wont work. also try a different power connector to the drive, it might have a dud connection somewhere.

if you did indeed mean the HDD then just try the same as above.


Or i just thought of this. boot the PC into the bios and go on 'auto detect drives' or something. it might have been removed from the bootup list or summet, so it still finds the A: and C:, but not the D:. if none of these work then i have no idea mate, sorry
 
Uninstall the drivers for it, restart, and then reinstall the drivers.

Yes, it's my CD drive. I've already checked the cables a few times and everything appears to be there and in working order, but as previously mentioned my chasis fan was sharing joint power with it and it dissapeared after that. So I reconnect my chassis fan to run off the joint power of my HDD instead, which is what it was back when my CD-ROM was still in existence. I'll check it out.


No, check to see if the drive's wire hasn't come out. Do this by opening the tower up.

That could be, but it's in an akward position and somehwta difficult to tell if it's in or not. I'll try that too.

hmm your OS should detect the drive when you start up... and if doesn't detect it, means its not connected...

Obviously you didn't read the whole post.

Just because something doesn't show up doesn't mean that it isn't connected. There could be a problem with the drivers inturn causing it to seem 'invisible'. There could be a problem with the IDE/SATA ribbon causing the drive to not be detected. Or the drive could be dead, which, you guessed it, would cause it not to be detected.
 
sorry to bring this back, but i'm having a similar problem with my USB disk, i put it in, it comes up with all the found new hardware stuff, but i can't access it from my computer, i tried going to run -> E:\\ and that didn't work either, i've tried with my USB disk, and my mp3 player:( i first noticed it when i tried to put music on my mp3 player, but Windows Media Player didn't detect it:(

also, it doesn't come up with the thing that says what action you want to perform:(

i just got Windows reinstalled, and now i'm having this:(

it works fine in the school computers
 
it appears in the device manager, and there are no errors there, it says it is working properly and so are all the host controllers and the root hubs, i tried it in every USB port on my computer, it won't let me access any files on them, but it still detects them, i am using a USB mouse that works fine:confused:
 
there are no drivers to update for the USB root hub, or the USB host controller, it detects all other USB devices, such as a USB mouse, it just doesn't detect USB storage devices, it says "found new hardware" and all tha crap, but i can't access it
 
Well, if it says "Found New Hardware" it is detecting the device. Support for USB-mounted disk drives is native in Windows XP, and you should not need 3rd party drivers. If it's showing up fine (i.e. no exclamation points or crosses) in Device Manager, you should go and have a look in the Disk Administrator. It could just be that you need to configure a mount point for the disk.
