Okay...SR is at S rating, but how do I get my DR up?!

As a veteran of GT and online racing in general, I have found the rating system to work very well, in that now having a SR of A, and being matched
to other A rated drivers, the races I've had have been some of the best I've ever seen online (against people you don't know).

There is very little contact if any in the A rated races. The track obviously has some impact on that too, but by and large, people seem to
be looking after their SR rating from what I've seen. That should make the DR a bit easier to improve in the long run, if the races are enjoyable.

I don't how it is calculated for racers who start on pole and finished on pole but in the few races that I've done just to test my theory, it would seems that you just have to finish in a higher position than when you started. For instance, say you start P9, try to make up 2 or 3 spots or if you are confident in your skills go for top 3. Do that consistently in however many races while keeping you SR as high as possible (meaning clean racing) and you'll see it the DR going up quite a bit. That's what I did that when my DR was at a D, in about 5-6 hrs of playing I got it to a B. That being said, what I've noticed is once you reached that B rating for the DR, the progress bar takes a really long time to budge. As I'm typing this right now, mine is little less than a quarter and I've already done close to 70 races at this point...granted I have yet to win one so I'm not sure how that impacts it.

I've been improving my DR by racing close to and beating people with DR A. You don't necessarily need to overtake others. If your qualifying time puts you in front of people with better DR and you don't lose your position during the race, that should improve your DR a bit. Of course winning should be the best way to do it but that's harder.

I'm a whisker away of DR A now. I'm curious to see if I'll be able to progress once I get it because it's hard as hell to win against the aliens.

Im pretty sure penalties have nothing to do with sr. I suck and my sr is an s and constantly rose on the way. I have only ever seen 2 orange sr messages. On that same token I prob have not even finished in the single digits but 2 or 3 races. Tons of off track penalties wild variations in lap times. Dr is a D and that is prob where it will stay as I get matched with Dr a and sr s about every time.

6 races last night. Got 2nd once and never really dropped starting positions except once. Mostly clean racing too (one completely clean race). Zero movement on DR. I'm starting to think the only way to bump DR is coming in 1st. GT Sport is starting to feel like a permanent GT Academy.

what is your DR rating now?

Low B. I got to B very quickly (~10 races) and now I feel like Im stuck there. As all the A/S guys are kicking my butt.

Yeah, I'm basically in the same boat. My progress bar has been the low B's for a little while now and doesn't seem to move move even when I had some pretty good races

By the way, I was in a pretty good group last night with someone who had "cwitr" as their PSN ID, was it you?

It must be largely based on overtakes and manoeuvres then. I usually lead the pack the entire time due to strong qualifying times, so maybe that's why my DR is low.
I think you're right. A few times I started at the back of the grid and made my way up through field overtaking several cars.

Not sure if that is correct. At least for my experience, I started last weekend. When I got into the B tier for Driver Rating. I almost every race I was the TQ and won the race. It just takes forever to progress to A which now I am half way. But for the Sportsmanship Rating, I have driven clean for the most part and I barely just hit A tonight.

A lot of people incorrectly think that DR is something that is meant to progress upwards. It's not meant to do that! Your player level goes up and up, but your driver rating represents your skill compared to the rest of the player population and will eventually reach a stable value.

We don't know the statistical weights of the DR groups, but if they're evenly weighted, then they'll each represent (100/number-of-groups)% of the population:

0-17%: E
17-33%: D
33-50%: C
50-67%: B
67-83%: A
83-100%: S

What that means it that 50% of the players won't make it to B or higher, 67% of the players won't make it to A or higher, and 83% of the players won't make it to S.

DR is comparable to the competitive rank in games like Overwatch or Heroes of the Storm, btw.

The only way to progress your DR is to become significantly better than other drivers out there. Concrete example: if you're in DR C with a full grid of other C players, you'll only progress to B if you're able to consistently win against the C players, proving that you're better than C.

Grinding for hundreds of races isn't going to make a difference to your DR. Even if you get slightly better through lots of practice and manage to improve your lap times, all the other players out there are probably doing the same! So if your rate of skill improvement is average, your DR isn't going to change. It's even possible that your DR will go down because all the other players out there are training harder than you are! I was at DR C in the first few days after release, but I dropped down to D, probably because players are improving more quickly than I am. (Maybe I'm getting too old for this.)

I just took a screenshot of my DR progress bar before and after a 2 races.

1 win (N200)
1second place + fastest lap (Gr.3)

The bar moved 1 pixel (that's what I can see on my HD screen). It will take a lot of time to get to DR S. O.o

I'd also like the matchmaking system to put me on pole a few times on the Gr.3 races. :D I always get second place behind an alien (and I'm on the top10 atm) - Chris or derek - and we usually leave all the field behind with a gap of 20-30 seconds.

I must be the person with more second places in GTS atm lol. Yet, I see people who are slower than me with more wins/poles/fastest laps per races finished. Somehow they're getting matched without people from the top10 more often. Maybe it's only down to schedule. Who knows.

Ran the 10lap Gr.3 race tonight. Started in 13th and finished 8th, and I think my DR actually went down a bit.

Yep, sure was! (Hope I didn't bump you)

No, I don't remember getting bumped at all in that group though I did make a few mistakes here and there :p. Everyone seemed to have really good pace. Hope to see you again on the track. ID - BigBoy209

Haha...good deal. I was battling for 9th and me and another driver swapped paint on several turns. Will be on tonight: PSN: cwitr98

Gotta get my qualifying times down some.

Are you doing the Gr 4 at Kyoto Park or the Gr 3 at Nurb? I'm trying to get a good handle at Kyoto before I jumped into the 10 lap race. Currently seating at 1.45 for my qualifying time but I have yet to have a good race there and my DR is taking a beating.

Gr.3 is the only one I did last night (Wednesday nights are race-with-friends night in private Lobby [you're welcome to join!]). Wanna get Nurburgring GP dialed in before stepping down to Gr.4. The 10 lapper aint bad. Took about 20 minutes...no pitting

I'm at D for DR and B for SR. Haven't had much time to play so I find myself trying one or two online races every time I can get on and skipping the campaign. This weekend I'll try getting my DR rating up. I think with time it should improve.

Cool! Will definitely look into it!

What SR do you start the game with?

When I started, I believe both DR and SR were at E. I don't think those carried over from the demo!

My DR = D my SR = S i`m not the fastest driver but i`m having lots of fun in most races . Need to learn the tracks better to get my DR up more . And i wish they would cycle the daily races more i hate it that there are only 3 races to choose from i feel this needs to be at least 6 .

Probably a crap tonne of races. My DR is still D even though I've won 12 races. My SR is B now.
Id love to know how it works. Ive only run 14 races and im B B. 6 wins, 5 Fastest Laps and 5 Poles. Id guess ive been top 5 in pretty much all bar 1 when I didn't do the warmup and was 5 seconds a lap off the pace.

I climbed from DR D to DR A in about a week, I'm still sitting at low DR A sometimes dipping back into DR B.

I think you get more DR "points" as you beat drivers with a higher DR than you. When I was in DR D I was racing DR C and DR B drivers and finishing in the top 3 almost every race, at that point my DR climbed rapidly.

Ultimately, I wouldn't stress about having a higher DR, if you're a DR B and you're placing 5th, 2nd, 8th, etc you're probably in the right ranking. Right now if you were in DR S, you probably wouldn't have any fun or be competitive.

Edit: Not that I've seen any DR S drivers yet.

As others have said I'm sure DR is about how well you do relative to the rest of the community and not just how many races you run (tend to beat D and C drivers? you'll get to B... but don't consistently win the B races? you'll probably stay there). It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

After hitting DR B last night I tended to start around P3 or P4 among a group of mostly other B's, would usually finish in a similar position and my progress bar didn't seem to be moving. One race I was placed into with all C's and D's, and easily won from pole. I was thinking that was kinda like a check, "ok are we sure this guy is a B? Let's see if these C drivers can mix it up with him... ok no, definitely a B." Not sure that win would gain me anything appreciable towards an A rank though.

I do wonder if the algorithm takes your quali and race lap times into account, or just finishing positions (against other drivers of various ranks). Not that it really matters, eventually it should tend to average out.

I have currently DR B. Progress bar about half full currently. I raced gr4 races with 458 and was competitive against full pack of gtrs and rating went up quite fast. Maybe the game takes into account car disadvantages? I was mostly 1-3 position all day.

Might just be coincidence or it could just be me. But i had the feeling that the first couple races you run of a particular event you get put in a lobby with slightly lower or equal tier drivers. As you do good in those you get paired with higher rated drivers until you stop winning.

Like last time i played i did the 10 lap nurburgring race. I have a B rating myself, the first 3 or 4 races i got paired with B and C drivers. Started and finished top 3 in most of them. Then i got paired with all B's and A's and i had to start 12 and finished 8. There was a top10 player in that race as well.

But this could just be up to the time of day. The last race was around 21h or 22h GMT so probably allot more higher rated player online at that moment as well.
