They're way, way down on the realism scale, especially towards the end, but I can't help loving the chase scenes in 'The Blues Brothers'. Every time I start watching one, I find that I have to sit down and watch it all, and end up watching the rest of the movie. :)👍

I have to agree, and also add the chase in Blues Brothers 2000. No, the movie wasn't very good, but the car chase in it was hilarious. Near the end of the chase, they jump the neo-Blues Mobile over a construction site. A couple of cop cars crash into it, and a progressively larger pile-up occurs. About a minute after that, they just started shooting cop cars into the pile for the sake of doing so, the hell with realism.

^ That scene is awesome. There really isn't any point to it all, and yet you can't stop laughing as the P71s stack up. Although Blues Brothers 2000 is by no means any kind of "real" successor to the origional, it was a pretty decent movie. At least the music was good, you do have to admit that (I'm thinking of the end sequence with the Voodoo Erica Badu [sp?])...

But, yes, The Blues Brothers certainly deserves a nod. I love watching the closing chase scene...

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses...

Awesome ending to a great movie. I guess the camera car that they used got up to 150 MPH when they were filming in downtown Chicago, particularly in the parts under the L-Train. I always thought it was great that you could follow the chase scene in your own car, one of the many things you can do that is freakin' awesome in Chicago.

Chicago reminded me. Driven(yeah, I know I know), the chase between two CART/F1-like race cars through the streets of Chicago. That was a blast. 👍

Now while not a chase scene I feel that the opening piece from "The Driver" does deserve a special mention. Firstly because is a great demonstration of how to rip every part off a car without wreaking it, and because its been copied so many times before, both in films and in the original Driver game as well.

Fun thread, and a favorite movie theme of mine.

Most of all the great classic car chases are already mentioned (like; Bullitt; French Connection; The Italian Job; Le Casse; Vanishing Point; Gone in Sixty Seconds; etc), as well some of the best modern car chases (like; Ronin, To Live and Die in L.A.; The Bourne Identity/Supremacy; BMW's The Driver series; etc)

But I was shocked no one has mentioned any of the Smokey and the Bandit movies... especially part 3. ;) (100% kidding of course)

Some other noteworthy modern car chases:
  • Terminator 2
  • Matrix Reloaded (extra credit for the amazing stunt coordination!)
  • The Crimson Rivers
  • The Transporter (too many edits, but the stunt driving was quite spectacular)
  • Batman Begins (yes, some CGI was used, but most of the action was all real... and quite impressive)
  • Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Honorable mention has to go out to the great car chases in Nick Park's Wallace & Gromit films. 👍

As far as longest, I suppose you could give it to Speilberg's 1971 cult classic Duel. :D

Although the movie really doesn't include a "chase sequence" in the general definition of it all, I think American Graffiti deserves a nod as well. It definitely depicts what was awesome about America in the early '60s (1962 I believe), and if we would want to do a bit of a time-warp to 1976, Dazed and Confused kinda does the same thing, albeit not always about the driving.

There's a show on FOX that looks to be quite promising called Drive with an illegal car race across America for a $32 million prize, but none of the contestants know who else is in the event.

Defaintely soudns interesting for car chases.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but does anyone have a certain clip of the movie Harold and Maude where he leaves the hospital and drive the Jaguar E type hears to it's limits then off of a clip? I've seen the clip before, but I can no longer locate it!
