Fact is that the steering wheel is better, faster and smoother then the ps3 controller. Some will disagree and will say that Thers no difference here, so, why are (general) 90% of ppl using steering wheel, drive on it instead using ds3 controller!?
Why?!

Why are 99% ppl Drive the TT's on wheel?! When you look the time board, you can't find the ds3 players...

It's silly that someone tells me to practise and will insure me
That my Lack of skill is the"difference"! LOL...
Maybe my lack off skill is like 1/2 seconds slower on a certain track, but not 10secs!!

I woulda like to see that GT separates the servers for wheel drivers and ds3 controller drivers. B'koz, I can't see no point that I'm not competitive when I'm from
The start in disadvantage!

And please don't tell That I need to practise!

I have been a tester for a few FITT Tuning Challenges, one that was based around the BMW Concept Seasonal, and of all of the testers, my lack of skill accounts for a few seconds around the track.

Another thing that I assume about some of the top seasonal drivers is that they use all the driving aids the challenge allows, like SRF. Because of this, I agree that the leaderboard should have options for you to compare to drivers using similar features to your own, wheel or controller and which aids are enabled.

Yes, it is a lot easier to be smoother on a wheel compared to the controller, but there are a lot of people on here that are able to compete with the controller against wheel users and sometimes even be faster in the race. The device used for driving on the game is only as good as the time the user puts in on that device, so yes, if you practice more, then you would improve on the device that you practice on.

A lot of people do use controllers. Just looking at the top TT guys does not justify you saying that 99% of people use wheels, that is BS. And yes, lack of skill can contribute to 10 seconds. It is easier to be smooth with a wheel, but you can be smooth with a controller to, it just takes practice. If you refuse to acknowledge that it takes practice, then there's your problem right there.

To add to what's already been said, a lot of people migrate to the wheel when they reach a certain level, or when they're serious about time trials and racing, that's another reason there aren't so many fast controller users near the top of the leaderboards a lot of the time. They feel the effort they already put in is a good reason for an additional purchase. I did, although I'm rarely that fast.

Even if you bought a magic wheel, you would still need to practice.

At first, you would probably be slower than your DS3...

Look harder, there are tons of DS3 users. You seem to think that DS3 users are at a severe disadvantage. While I do agree that using a wheel will better your times, the performance gap from using a DS3 to using a wheel isn't as great as you make it out to be. All of the top drivers on time trials are where they are because they put the time and practice into doing good laps and are highly invested in the game. I can guarantee that if GT6 disallowed wheels and only allowed DS3s, the same people would still be at the top of those time trials with maybe a very slight difference. I've seen enough great DS3 drivers and awful wheel drivers to know that hardware isn't the issue.

Wheel/DS3 is about 25/75...or at least it was in GT5 when we had stats available. Most aliens drivers use a wheel because most people that are alien skill level are also serious about their equipment and want the best they can afford.

I've even seen people at the top using the control cross instead of the analog sticks on the DS3.

In my opinion proper racing technique accounts for more than anything in sim racers. Proper technique requires a lot of practice and seeking information about it and how to apply it. If you don't want to practice well there's not much that's going to help you no matter what input device you use.

Sark

I don't space for a good wheel set-up for where I live and I'm more than willing to spend that money on things like food. (Don't worry, I'm not poor/struggling, just better spending options than wheel.) I'm not the best at driving, but I've gotten all gold licenses and can drift well with a DS3. If the console comes with a controller, why not save some cash and use it? All you have to do is change the controller set-up. The x and o or square button stuff is crap.

It also might be that using a wheel is a "fit with the group" sort of thing. As in, "oh, everyone I talk to uses a wheel, so then I must too," or else you'll be considered a worse person? Don't think so.

I knew someone who was alien fast, & he used a DS3. He had many top ten times on the TT world leaderboards in GT5 Prologue too. Then he bought a wheel, a DFGT. He was much slower with it & couldn't get used to it at all, even after months of trying. Then he switched to a G27 & was back to his alien pace within just a few weeks.

I was slower when I went from my DF Pro to a G25, took me a few months to get 100% of my pace back. It didn't make me any faster though. Like Johnny says, most serious guys all have wheels simply because their serious, it's not the wheels making them faster.

You have yet to say how long you've played in the GT series overall. I can tell you for sure that creating multiple threads to rant about wheel vs. DS3 and using excessive text speak will bring you quickly to the notice of the mods here, though.

Here's the truth about wheel vs. DS3: Of course wheel/pedal setup can make you faster, with practice and patience. But you have to balance that against the costs and the screwups that happen when applying your setup to a specific game. Many threads exist here that speak to shifters not working properly for certain cars/optional parts added to cars. A clutch application can be troublesome. In game menus bring wheel users more options (like on-the-fly brake balancing) but also problems when certain mapping options conflict with gameplay. Steering ratios have been an age-old bugaboo. Have you seen the cockpit view in most cars? Horribly narrow, vision-blocking, mapped-by-monkeys mess. They choose that mess, so I don't cry for them, and quite frankly am impressed with what they DO finally manage to accomplish after all that money spent. In GT6 the margin is down considerably, though.

Now for the DS3. It takes practice to learn how your twitching thumbs affect those twitching sticks. IF you indeed are new to this game, map your gas/brake to the shoulder triggers NOW! I can't grasp the change, so ask someone or look for threads discussing this to figure out a proper mapping solution. Folks will hold up those like Ed_Night to "prove" DS3's capabilities but he and those like him ARE aliens. But I'll bet you dollars to donuts they're using the triggers and not the right stick. It's called trail- or power-braking and for time, it works. Another trick of the wheel jockeys is E-brake U-turns, which I can't get the hang of as I'm more likely to lock the E-brake than just lightly tap it (maybe another trigger application?). There are tricks, and my guess is some current DS3 superstars learned them from previous wheel experience. For the DS3, all you can do is map things out with care (like knowing that reverse is your triangle button, not DOWN on the right stick) and adjust the steering sensitivity to where the car behaves properly according to your thumb twitches.

If it helps, I'm still, after some 12 years playing, learning things about Nurburgring (been around for 4 years now?) and how to make time there that I thought was settled years ago
.
Yes, a wheel, with proper practice and setup and diligent attention to detail, can be faster (You want someone to say it publicly? There it is:tup:). So can a 60 inch plasma screen and maybe 3-D and maybe surround sound tells a player earlier his back tires are about to break loose. It's up to you to play your game and not worry about how others play theirs. :gtpflag:

This guy just can't come to terms with that fact that he is just outright slow. There have been multiple threads started by this guy and they are all very similar. He refuses to believe it is his huge lack of skill and continues to blame it on the hardware. @iWancheck if you want to improve you have to first be able to realize your mistakes. And considering that you are ten seconds off pace while using skid recovery force vs a lap that didn't suggests you are making a HUGE amount of mistakes. If your that much slower you don't even have the basic fundamentals or you just aren't grasping the physics at all. I would really like you to go out and buy a wheel one of these days. And I hope you post a bunch of threads about your immediate success and how you gained ten seconds instantly! Or maybe you will sell the wheel after a few days because you can't complete a lap of any pace without spinning a few times, then you will probably attribute that to a faulty wheel. Your going to get chewed up here Everytime you ask this. You need to be able to identify your mistakes. You need to practice. That's all.

So, everyone said that driving with wheel is much better and faster then on ds3...soooo, why then so long monologues ppl?!

I playGT series on a first play station till now, and I know the difference as well how it feels drive in a when and on a ds3 controller. So, my conclusion is, and as everyone said that on wheel is better and faster, easy right?!

@roscolove, I dare you and everyone, go on a Nurb and do you're time with an Wieder Raybirg, 6500pp, ds3 stick.

Do you're lap, record it and post it as a proof!

Why are I you so stubborn ppl?! I didn't say that Thers no good players on ds3 controller, my point is that majority wount say"wheel is better"instead "lack of skills", that's stupid and annoying.

And lately I'm driving without SRF, hard tho but better option is ASM OFF SRF ON and TC1.....

And I dare anyone to rave with me with a controller on The Nurb, 650pp, own tune set up....

Range rover TT time board shows another my friend...and Toyota FT-1 as well....and every TT race top 50 (or top200) are wheel drivers...sooooooo...

You have the perfect mind set for failure. It's better by a couple tenths (maybe since most serious players go to the wheel) . Maybe a second or so around the ring (maybe since the most serious players go to the wheel) Your slow because of You, not because your on a controller. And if you got a wheel you would be slower for a long time. And you probably wouldn't get any faster because you have a huge lack of understanding of the games physics/racing fundamentals. I already ran the car. I beat you quite easily and I haven't used the pad in quite a long time. You have got the answers to the questions you have asked. Many including myself have tried to help you (have you even remapped the buttons yet/stuck to it) but you take nothing from it. Why do you even post here?

I recently tested this "wheel theory" on my PS2. I used a Logitech wheel for about 3/4 hours, to try and get used to it. In the end, it was fun, but I was still a lot slower than with a dualshock, which is what i've been using since 2007.

The wheel is in no way a magic fix. A DS3 is not an excuse, as many use it as. By getting a wheel, you're going to waste a lot of money on something that will make you even slower for a while.

Practice is always the key to being fast. I guarantee that none of the fastest in the world were bad to average on a DS3 and then magically became fantastic by buying fancy equipment.

EDIT - If you're 10 seconds off people, the only thing you're in need of is a huge amount of practice. It's not silly, because if wheel and DS3 users of similar pace can race together, then you being 10 seconds off means skill is the only thing you need to work on.

Please, also, don't think that spending lots of money will turn you into a driving God. It doesn't work like that.

A wheel is EASIER not better or faster. Most of us dislike SRF and TC because they give an unnatural sense of grip and control. I started the series with GT5 so I don't have the experience compared to others, which is why I am slower, but I am learning to become faster. I enjoy using my G27 when I get the chance, I just don't have the space or time for using it enough, but I really enjoy the control I have gained on the DS3, so, I would rather use the DS3 over the G27.

Suggestion, put in hours with SRF and TC off until you are as good as you are with it on, or you could try something that will end up being more rewarding, ABS off. These are just suggestions though, I never said you need to.

All depends on car/aids/equipment/driving style, Having had a wheel and controller back in the GT4 days I know its faster using a wheel it just takes practice, It should also be said I would probably have a wheel now if I had the room for one and the cash for one as I am by no means slow.

I'm the best example I know so I have to use myself, otherwise I would gladly use others. But I ran laps around the ring on a DS3 that were deemed impossible by many accomplished wheel users. You can read about it by searching for the "wheel vs pad" thread (you will also see a lot of information posted about your question) and you can continue your reading by searching for "ringmasters challenge" thread since the first one got closed. At that time I didn't even own my own PS3 or a copy of gran turismo. I played at a friends house mostly on the weekends. At first I sucked and wondered how people were so much faster. I practiced and practiced and eventually I got to the point where I would never lose. I never met anyone that could run those times. It's not because I'm the best or anything. I just practiced. And that's all you need to do.

My experience with a wheel has actually put me off buying one for GT6. I thought that I may have some more pace in me with one, but when you weigh it up, 7 years of practice with one thing will far outweigh any benefit of buying brand new fancy gear.

That experience, and doing very well on the first time trial I ever put effort into led me to believe it would be worth investing in a wheel and possibly going to finals in GT Academy. I became serious about the game and got a wheel. That's how most people do things when they are good at something. They eliminate as many variable as they can that will cause failure. For serious GT players that's buying a wheel. That's why most of us own a wheel. That's why most of the top times are done on wheels. Not because a wheel is that
much faster, but because that's what most serious people or ones even capable of doing top times use.
We are beating this into you. Why won't you just accept that you are slow. You don't "understand" GT games. And that you are the reason for the large gaps in lap times. I promise you if you got a full motion setup and the best wheel in the world with all the coolest gadgets. You would still have the same question in your head. But it wouldn't be wheel vs pad anymore. It would be them vs me. It it going to take a potential waste of hundreds of dollars for you to realize that?

So y'all wanna say that the lap times with an ds3 controller can be reached with good skil and equal ure self with an wheel driver?!?!

LOL!

Yes, because this "10 second" time gap you're stating is crap. Do you actually think that you will get good by spending £200 over actually bothering to get good?

The fact that DS3 users can be the fastest in the world completely invalidates your statements. By your logic, if you gave the fastest DS3 driver in the world a wheel, would he then be 10 seconds faster than everyone else?

Your reasoning is staggering. So is your grammar. Not in a good way.
