So far the only bad thing I can say about this game is that it's single player. I think it would make a cool multiplayer game. It could even be four player fairly easily without having to divide up the screen.
On to the good stuff!
If you liked the Tomb Raider series, this one will fit your build. Konoko (main character) is a police officer (?) with the TCTF group. She is some kind of genetically enhanced fighter that kicks major butt. As Konoko you go through several missions tracking down the bad guys and eliminating anything that gets in your way - with the exception of civilians and your own troops, who do a fair job of helping you out.
The controls are pretty good. I've been playing with the default setup which is much like Halo, except that jump and crouch are left triggers. Using one thumbstick for torso control and one for look control works very well. Almost every button on the DS2 is used including one that I didn't know existed. Did you guys know the thumbsticks were buttons? You push them down and they click, exactly like the XBox controller. They are refered to as L3 and R3. That's a lot of buttons ...
The graphics are pretty darn good. I don't think they really pushed the PS2's capabilities, but they did make a pretty game. I've only experienced visual lag once or twice in the game, and I was getting jumped by about 15 baddies at the same time with all kinds of explosions going on around me. The visuals really give you a feeling of being in a comic book, which (from what I've heard) is what they were shooting for.
Speaking of shooting, the weapons are pretty neat. There is a pretty good armory of guns with different shot styles and a couple different kinds of ammo. The bigger the gun is the slower you move, and the slower you turn to aim it. With the "Tomb Raider" point of view, they had to come up with a cool way of showing you where your gun is pointed, and I think they were successful. A thin line shoots out from the barrel and puts a small target where you are aiming. There is only a minimal amount of "snap" distance for auto aim (maybe a human body's width ...), unlike Tomb Raider which can be set to full auto aim.
The fighting moves in this game are better than some pure fighting games from the originial Playstation. The throw moves are really cool. There are a few neat combos with punches and jabs too. You can even jump flip through the air and land on your opponent. My favorite thing to do is a punch punch kick combo which knocks them down, then jump flip onto their body to kill them. It's like a humiliation blow (:
The game style is a lot like Obi-Wan for XBox, but it doesn't quite have that level of quality. It's still a really good game, especially for the $20 USD that I paid for it.
Ok, so there are a couple other things about the game that irritate me. It's on a PS2 CD instead of a DVD. That really doesn't make it less of a game, but knowing that it fits on a CD makes me think it's going to end up being a quick win.
I really wish it had a multiplayer fighting mode so I could woop up on my friends. There could be a few different TCTF units, maybe some bad guys, and a few other characters like Konoko to choose from. It'd be pretty cool.
I'm at a stage that is really hard to beat. I start off with three TCTF officers helping me, but they all get shot up really fast by the hoards of enemies that are shooting at us from higher floors. ARRRRR .... maybe I'm just not as good as I thought I was.
Konoko can only carry one weapon at a time, but can carry the ammo for two different kinds of guns. I wish she could at least holster one weapon and pick up another temporarily.
Anyway, tell me what you guys think if you've played it. Oh, and has anyone else played a game that uses L3 and R3?
