A have some small issues, when it comes to online racing, that maybe one of you have a solution for. We are about to start an online racing league in our local Miata club. We race every Monday night, but until now it has only been training. But next Monday we will start the championship. Some of the drives are having problems with connecting to my lounge, after 30 sec or so they are disconnected from My lounge. Both my connection and the participant’s connection should be fast enough (Tested: 20 m/bit download, 2 m/bit upload and 20 ms ping). We have no idea of why this happen and no solution. I have tried to change the quality of the online game from high to low, but it is the same result.

The next issue is really annoying.

Online qualification. Before each race we have a 30 minutes training/qualification, so we can have a grid order. Of cause everybody is using Free Run to enter the track and everybody stays on track, when they have started the Free Run. No jumping between lobby and track. The setting for the grid is set to fastest first. It works okay, but that is until I enter the track. I am the host of the race and when I enter the track and start qualifying; I get the Pole every time. That is very nice, if I was the fastest, but I am not. So now it is just annoying. The funny thing is that on the leader board in the right side of the HUD, I am listed as the one with the pole time, but not on the other participant’s leader boards!!!!! It is the same issue no matter when I enter Free Run, if I am the first to enter the track or the last. Even though I drive the slowest time in Free Run, when the race starts I am on Pole position. Have any of you had that experience??? And is there a way of solving that issue or is it a bug in GT5???

Thank you for your help.

Regards.

That's funny. I am pretty sure that I have the settings right. But just to be safe. Can you list your online settings as a host?

Thanks.

Make sure they are not using wireless. Wireless sucks for GT5. Going to wired has fixed many peoples issues.

I have never had a problem using wireless. Those people who are having problems with wireless probably have a bad set up at home.

Wifi transmits at 54mbps ... Whilst I don't think anyone will have that kind of internet connection ... So a wifi connection provides more than enough bandwidth.

Did you try to clean up your cache too ? It's under option, networking then clear cache.

Dunno if it change something but can try.

While lot of people's problems are probably due to a bad set up, the speed of wireless isn't really the issue here, with wireless it can be unstable at times as many things can interfere with it, adding to this, I don't think the wireless receiver in the PS3 is very good, mine doesn't even work for instance, one day it just stopped, so I had to switch to a wired connection.

I know what I'm doing :)

Not everyone has the problem. I'm not saying the bandwidth is too small, I'm saying there is a problem with some peoples wireless.

I had the problem. I had 60-90% signal strength. Not ideal, but not terrible.

Downloads were fast. Every other game was flawless.

I now run wireless to my laptop, then cabled from the laptop to the ps3. This fixed all of my online issues with GT5 (and has helped others in other threads experiencing trouble with online).

If you have problems AND you are running wireless, try wired.

If you still have problems, good luck.

If you don't have problems, don't try to disprove this unless you have field tested it.

Ps, I just thought I'd add that setting up any DMZ or port forwarding or any other "special just for GT5" (mtu etc) settings can be experimented with AFTER going to wired if it's still borked.

I made the mistake of doing these tests first, and it took ages and did not help. Plug a cable in, test it.

I was not the host in this case. But i am mostly the host if i play around with friends online. I never really changed anything in the settings except disable driving aids, rounds etc.

I dont think it has something to do with the settings. Because i assume there is no way of cheating, an nothing else would it be if you start in the pole no matter what time you had.

IIRC it's always set on "fastest" as default. Which would be the correct setting. I have no idea why it is not working in your case.

Don't use DMZ! I wish people wouldn't throw this option about so freely I really do!

Port forwarding yes, but try UPnP first as that allows the PS3 to open and close the port(s) it needs itself, it needs to be enabled on the router & on the PS3.

(Never had a problem with wireless and admittedly I don't have the best set up due to where the PC is ... My router is blocked by a wall / sometimes a door / and it sits right next to a printer which all get inbetween the router and the printer and it is fine. (Fine when the PS3 is upstairs aswell))

tourist - Do you have any problems when one of your friends hosts this same racing event?

Well if it a set up like I have the PS3 is wireless & the laptop is wireless and the laptop is linked up with the PS3 and many of you may have the same set up (sometimes without knowing) so it is worth not risking it. Especially now as the PS3 Security has been cracked, who knows what could be possible.

Well yeah if you put your laptop in the dmz then you are foolish. Technology is a dangerous thing for people who either don't know what they are doing, or think they know what they are doing.

Anyway, this is far from Gt5 now.

Did any of this thread help you altid6?

Not all Ferraris travel at 200mph everywhere they go... and not all wireless devices capable of 54 megabits per second are actually transferring at that speed.

Even if your own PC says "connected at 54mbps" that's still only it's max potential.

Still, my own experiment a year ago proved that XBL was playable on a dialup connection (specifically a lag-free evening of Forza 3) so its more likely that the OP's issues are NAT related or are to do with chunking of bandwidth at the modem

Regarding the qualification issue, I and 4 of my friends made a test last night. This is what happened.
We started out like always. I am the room owner in my lounge (possible for others as well to be room owner in my lounge!!!). I made the settings for a race, selected a track and made grid order, fastest first. All of us had headsets, so we could speak to each other and give feedback. We all entered the track and the deal was to drive one counting lap in free run. We did and I made sure to drive 10 sec. slower than the rest. Now on the HUD you have a leader board to the right and a position indicator in the top left corner. After the counting lap, each of us told our lap times and I was number 5, 10 sec of number 4. The first weird thing was that on each of our HUD, the person was shown as the fastest both on the leader board and the position indicator!!!! Well I pushed the start race button and as expected I was in pole position and all the others were placed randomly on the grid. So qualification failed big time.

We drove a couple of laps in the race and then stopped the race. Just for fun, we tried a new qualification in free run. The same settings as before and I would still be 10 sec. behind number 4. We did and told our lap times. But know it was getting weird again, because the leader board and the position indicator showed the right results on all of our HUD’s!!!! I started the race once again and this time every thing was perfect, so the grid was the same as the result of the qualification/Free run. This was a new experience ;o).

We then made one final test to confirm this. I close the lounge and every body jumped out, so we could start from the beginning.

So I join my lounge once again, made the settings and my friends join the room. Now instead of starting of with a free run, like we used to do, I started a Race right away. The race started and I drove a 100 meters and stop the race. Now we started a qualification/Free run like before, making one fast lap and YES the qualifying worked and showed the right leader board and position, compared to our lap times. When we started the race, the grid was the same as the qualifying result.

So if you want to host a race, with a qualifying session, just start and stop a race, before you begin your free run/qualification, then the result should be valid.
