Online Racing - Chill Out

So I finally got connected to PSN and had my firsty run online last night.

I joined a couple of different races, each at the Nurburgring, just to have a bit of casual practice session with non-AI drivers. In every race I joined though, I was smashed off the track by reckless drivers, which was made worse by the fact that with mechanical damage, I had to keep restarting because my car was wrecked.

I even joined races titled "descent drivers only" and "free run only, no race", only to find more reckless drivers. What's the point of having a free practice if you're not going to ackowledge the other drivers on the track? Just do a time trial in arcade mode instead.

Anyway, apart from that online is awesome. I did have one very entertaining drift session at Tsukuba, with some pretty spectacular tandem drifting. This is possibly the biggest improvement from GT4 to GT5 in my opinion.

In finishing, where are all the descent drivers and how do I find you?

In races, nobody attempts to brake AT ALL for me. Its like GT5's AI all over again. If I wanted to be pitted, and then get slammed again by incoming racers, I'll play singleplayer.

The problem with online is that there are a LOT of people who do not understand respectful and decent driving... often people think if they don't drive the wrong way on the track or intentionally tbone you in turns they are driving respectfully. They do not understand that it's not respectful to ride someones quarter panel into a turn on the inside or go 2 wide into a turn but try to hug the apex when you are the guy on the outside.

Pair this with the fact almost every race will have a few laggers causing weird jumpiness in the cars and it gets very hard to have a clean race.

I was doing some NASCAR on ovals the other night and I drive about as clean as you can get using a g27 (which precoludes me from even possibly driving twitchy like you might with a controller). I head lines that were fair, when we went 2 or 3 wide and I was outside I would lose position or grind a wall before smashing into someone on the inside and if I saw someone drafting up behind me fast I wouldn't block, I woud just hold a line to let them pass and avoid a potentially nasty wreck.

Watched the replays and the same people who were saying I was driving poorly were all over the track and taking "rubbin is racing" to the extremes.

THIS! I went to a race in Daytona and everyone was using the 88 C Minolta. I tried to race clean and keep the same line but kept getting bumped into the wall or people would cut down low from the high line, bump into me and spin out.

Then they kicked me out and told me to race clean and stop putting people into the wall.

Ummm pretty sure me keeping my line is clean, you trying to force your way down is not....

The other day I was on the Nurburghring 24h layout. It was dark, rainy and nobody had the chance to switch to Rain tyres. After spinning out on a high speed section, one driver slowed down and drove around me, as I had spun on the racing line. As I was speeding up I got overtaken by another driver in a fairly equivalent car. I overtook him on one corner and we were going down a straight. All I could hear was the driver behind beeping at me. So I moved over to the side of the track thinking he wanted to overtake. He then followed me and continued beeping. Eventually he crashed after not braking and desperately trying to swerve round me.
Then on SSR7 I was having a battle with an identical car. We were slingshotting back and forth and eventually he just slammed me into the wall. This wouldn't have been bad, but it was rainy and rain tyres aren't very durable. I spun and he continued. I was going to finish before him, but I just gave up after that...

I agree...

I hosted my own Super GT room and it was the best racing I had so far. I got killed in every race by a better driver, but it was clean and good racing.

People who joined used the proper cars and setting the HP limits made sure no bums tried to come in and dominate a race with an overpowered car.

Definitely will do that again, it may take some time to get more people into your room but its worth it.

I dont know why people care if others use aides or not. Most of the time they slow you down and some people need them to compete with others. IE not having a wheel setup.

I once had a race online at the Ring, and one of the drivers used his Bugatti Veyron like a tank, and just plowed anyone that was in his way. That wasn't fun. Oh, and I also heard this altercation in one room where two guys were arguing on who hit who. That was pretty amusing to listen in on.

One thing to remember and look forward to is that the GT series is really geared at enthusiasts like us. The Veyron kids and other annoying online presences will die down a month after Christmas. Kids will get bored of the game, or stuck where they don't have to patience to forward their offline progress and move on to Call of Duty or NFS.

I'm hoping that PD will be patching/update the online experience with more room controls (like passwords, private rooms, etc), so that these kids/trolls can be more easily avoided.

I really only use the my lobby now. You can find people you have added to you friends list and race with them and others of like mind. It's been great. I'm pretty new to GT although I can finish 1st sometimes unusually end up middle of the pack. Speaking for myself if I am racing you and you think I did something wrong it wasn't intentional. I'm just new and still figuring out the lines and where I'm supposed to be. If someone faster is coming up I let them by. If we are headinging into the turn at the same time and I think they are more experiences then me I will move over and slow down. But atbthe same time I want to get better and I want to win so sometimes I wont back down but if I hit somebody I usually apologize. For the most part if you get with a group that is better than you but not to the extreme they understand mistake are mistakes. I even warn them sometimes. Last week i said I'm am using MT for the 1st time so watch out I may be all over the place trying to watch when to shift and the turn coming up. They laugh but understand. Online is great if you find a good group.

But I can tell you nomatter how good the group sometimes that first turn is a mess.

I dont know why people care if others use aides or not. Most of the time they slow you down and some people need them to compete with others. IE not having a wheel setup.

The only thing I have against aids being on is people who don't realize what having them off does... in the afore mentioned NASCAR oval race I was in, I was using racing soft and TC0 and almost everyone else was using racing hard (WTF?) and TC5... this means our cars performed very differently, which is fine but I think they had no idea what the differences were and so didn't drive appropriately for someone who would corner faster than they would and get spun out easily...

I think in truth there is some wonky netcode that makes it possible that you both hit each other... in other words on one players screen it was clearly not his fault but on the other players it was clearly the other guys fault... I saw some pileups that I cleanly made it through (like drove under a car flipping through the air) and 3 car lengths later I take a huge amount of damage and start spinning...

This is one reason why I don't race online. I am a single player kind of guy. But when I do go on, its very sparingly. The problem with going online with GT5 is that the game is still fairly new and you have all these newcomers that are trying to see what all the game can do. Whether its actually dirty racing to win or just checking out the damage system. Wait several months once things die down and you will start seeing cleaner racers more than likely.

I had an exceptionally fun race last night. Hit Autumn Ring Mini, pull out my Silvia RM and beat them. Then I pull out a full tuned Fiat 500 SS vs. a GT-R, Mine's GT-R and a Celica WRC. They're lie "look at the GTP dude" and we took off, and they all gave me credit on how I actually kept up. Then I pulled out a Karmann Ghia, whooped them again, and left. Best Online experience yet. 👍

I would love to have a race with just me and a group of guys from here, all on Nurburgring, all with stock GT-R's ('07), race medium tires. No other modifications.

5 laps at least. That would be awesome. I keep trying to find something like that online but it's just a slamming, pitting, cheating hack-fest.

Too true... not everybody out on the roads drives nicely that being said, I believe that as room host you have a responsibility to kick players who are driving backwards or intentionally trying to wreck other players, it helps out alot.

Seriously though, I refuse to race in rooms where some fool is running a 700hp limit with all aids turned off. You think you are super cool and hardcore, but most of the time your races degenerate into crash-punt fests. The chicane at Monza and the first couple of turns on the Nurburgring stand out as being especially bad in this regard.

The difference is that in reality very few people can afford to be a bad driver for long and even if they can, their body injuries probably won't let them

Actually, I know quite a few people who employ the buy a new car, get full coverage, drive like a crazy person until they crash, get excellent credit from having said car paid off, and then buy a new one. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I've only been online once so far, a quick race at Monza. I got as far as the second chicane (having gone from 4th to 1st at the first chicane, without hitting anybody) before somebody simply didn't brake and slammed into me from behind. If that's the way it is out there then I won't be bothering again.

Forza 3 was usually ok-ish online. There were a lot of idiots but they tended to get booted quite quickly

online isn't that bad, just looks for rooms with hp restrictions and avoid tracks like daytona and SS7. lol If you must race in a room full of noobs, stay in the rear of the grid, they usually wipe themselves out in the first corner anyways.
