I bought it on release day thinking that it was gonna be good, but I was wrong...

The bullet ballistics are not realistic at all. They've taken away one of the few good things away from the last of the series (Dragon Rising). They have also dumbed down the dificulty, as it is possible to fully heal yourself without a medic. The AI, as far as I'm aware, is even worse in this game. Whenever I order my team to flank a position, they always get spotted and get shot in the head because they randomly walk out into the open. The funniest thing is when you tell them to secure a building. They'll go in and just get shot down by 1 person hiding in the corner. It's so funny to watch because they don't watch their corners.

Dragon Rising received a lot of criticism but I decided to keep it, mainly because it is quite realistic and the PC version got a mission editor, which I think is the best thing about it. It kept me entertained for months, making new missions and trying out missions made by other people. They took this feature out in Red River, which I think is a fatal mistake.

I am thinking of returning this game because it is very disappointing. I have already completed the campaign but haven't yet tried co-op or multiplayer.

Although I think that it is unlikely that co-op is going to change my opinion, I will give it a try before deciding whether or not I should return the game. I think that you are already on my friends list so just send me a message when you decide to make the room. Do you just re-play the campaign in co-op mode like in Dragon Rising?

I'm not sure about co-op yet since in needs PSN, interesting what you say about it, so you wont recommend keeping it then. I can change game to something else but Did not have much to choose from, i though this game would be better that SOCOM 4.

It's meant to be a realistic game. But this particular game in the series doesn't have anything realistic about it. Even one of the airstrikes (the JDAM strike I think) is not powerful enough. It's meant to blow a very large crater yet all I saw was some dust being kicked up and that's it.

If you don't look at the game in a realistic way then I guess it's OK, nothing is too bad but nothing really shines either. But then again, you might as well get Battlefield instead.

Have you played the campaign yet by the way? If not, try it. You may like it because it still retains unique features such as bleeding (you will bleed out if you don't patch your wounds).

I have the game, bought it on release day. PSN was already offline at that time so I only did single player campaign and some FTEs. I am really enjoying this game so far. 👍 Is it realistic? Probably not, and the AI needs a patch: sometimes they are brilliant and really surprise you, other times they make you want to shoot them yourself. :lol:
But I still love it, I like the player progress system (though a bit shallow), and there are nice unlocks to be had by playing as a certain class (though I would like to have more ;)), which makes replaying missions with a different class fun. :) The missions are also cool, though the sergeant is a bit annoying. It really makes you feel like you are part of something bigger, especially the missions later on.

As for the story and missions realism: it's about as bad as Dragon Rising. ;) (e.g. you are given missions that make no sense whatsoever) In that sense it's a bit like an 80s action movie: don't judge it for the depth of the plot and the psychological motivation of the characters. :lol:

As for alternatives: the thing that comes closest IMO (and has way better AI) is GRAW2. BF3 is a different beast which I'll probably get too. :D I have played previous SOCOM installments and hated them BTW.

Overall, I'd give this game a 7. If they fix the annoyances (mostly the AI), it could be an 8.

Yes, i just got passed the mission were you keep falling back & defend positions & get picked up by chopper at end of mission.

1 thing i like about operation flashpoint is it's open world combat compared to COD set paths.

I almost forgot about the unlock system in Red River. I do like the system, it encourages you to complete the objectives so that you can get more points for upgrades.

The story is :yuck:. But atleast you can't just steal a Jeep and then just drive away to complete the mission like in Dragon Rising. But anyway, why did they get rid of the "fall back" command, given that it is what you have to do for a pretty large chunk of the campaign???:ouch: Anyway, if the PLA do decide to invade another country, I think that it would be a wise idea to just surrender.

Both games are bad I think, but the mission editor made Dragon Rising a much better game. There was an AI mod which improved AI behaviour by a lot and there was a very good user made mission where you played as the PLA. Red River needs this feature very badly, without it, I will only give it a 6 out of 10.

Yes, that's what I like about it too. You can do the missions your own way and you aren't restricted to do things. I hate all of the rubbish in Call of Duty such as pulling a knife out and throwing at someone. There's none of that rubbish here, it just all open world stuff! 👍👍👍

You just have to complete all of the objectives, including the optional ones.

Bronze: Complete mission;
Silver: Complete mission and all objectives;
Gold: Complete mission and all objectives, and beat the time limit.

Codemasters has released an advanced training manual PDF, which can be downloaded from their site. (Not sure about URL at the moment, will look up).

There's a time limit?

I do, still keep getting silver.
hmmm optional ones.

At the end, you can see if you have completed all of them. It will say like "Defend Position 7/7" if you have completed all of them or something like "5/7" if you failed a few.

Or maybe, you took too long and went past this "time limit" thing.
