As I mentioned in the GT4 Race Reports Forum, very occasionally it seems that some threads would be better ordered based on the last editing time of the posts, rather than the posting time of the posts.

Has any Forum software ever offered an option for this?

One approach would be to allow users to view the thread with either ordering, but that might seem to reduce the tangibility of the threads.

So another approach might be to allow moderators to set a special option for one or two "special" threads where it is intended that posters make updates to their original posting. One could even envision the software preventing multiple posts by each user in such a thread.

So, has any of this ever been done? Is it ever likely to occur in future gtplanet incarnations?

It occurred to me later that perhaps such "threads" should really be forums. I.e. rather than a poster having a "personal post" in a thread, they should simply have a "personal thread" in a forum. Although that still wouldn't automatically bring, say, an edited table posting back to the top so others can see recent changes. ("Up" postings could be used, but that could add unnecessary fluff to everyone's thread).

I've never heard of anything like this, but I can imagine that its very limited (and slightly confusing) application would prevent it from ever being implemented in forum software or here on the site.

The ability to order posts by last editing date rather than last posting date, e.g. when doing a search returning posts, could help Admins detect malicious editing of old posts. (One extreme case, which has occured before, is where reference information is in actual thread posts, and someone gets mad and wants to "take it away").
