overclock gone bad

They used explosives.

For one, it's impossible to get a Duron to 4ghz (not to mention boot into Windows) on air cooling. Secondly, the fan on the heatsink isn't spinning...

ok, so what happens when you do overclock a computer too much besides you killing the mobo. Will it pop or melt or anything?

now if someone can get a video of the progression of overclocking, shutting down, smoking and shutting down, maybe even a fire or melting process, something! :)

Here's some smoke from THG :D

9Mb linkage

Anyone got vid of someone going Office space on a computer?!

AMDs are notorious to what some call "magic smoke."

If you OC too high, a little poof will come out, and that's that. Then it's dead.

It really isn't all that exciting.

In regards to the video, no processor on this earth can handle 4V+ of power.

At least they got a new use for the motherboard now. But what new uses does the motherboard have now, it could hold a egg in postion.

MORE! That was awesome! The only thing that worries me now is that I have an AMD athlon XP 3200+ 2.2 ghz...:scared: (tells self to never clock my processor)

Does anyone have anymore bad overclocking results? Say from a video card being overclocked or something else? This is awesome!

Really, it's seldom exciting.

See, when you overclock, you don't go from 2.2 Ghz to 3, you slowely from 2.2 to maybe 2.25 at most.. Run it for a little while, so on so fourth. So, when you processor does finally die (that is, if you take it just too far. You usually can tell when the processor is starting to come to it's limits), it's usually just everything turning off. That's about.

But like I said, it's kind of hard to do that if you're careful with voltage and watch your temps. You really have to be a complete idiot to blow something up.

The same boring rule applies to video cards as well. You go to far, it usually just stops working.

LOL. An AMD cannot handle 4 + ghz, the fan wasn't spinning, and overclocking doesn't make a processor erupt into pieces.
FAKE. 👎

They can. I learned at college that the PSU outputs two voltages. 5v for the eletronics and 12V for the mechanics (cd/dvd/hdd motors).

But the vid is fake. ;)

Common, modern CPUs have a core voltage of a lot less than 4 though...mine (Athlon 2700+) runs at 1.65V I believe. On CPUdatabase, the highest core voltage on a 950 Duron is 2.33V. The vast majority are a lot lower, mostly 1.8-1.9V.

Modern (ish) PSUs will also have a +3.3V output for 3.3V AGP graphics cards too

The heck?

Yes, PSUs output 5V and 12V rails.. For things like your hard drive, optical drive, fans... Many other things. Those rails, however, do not directly make their way into the CPU at full power. Rather, the motherboard controls that.

Plenty of microprocessors use 5 V. Motorola 68HC12 series, for example.
Okay, I was probably a little to bold in my statement.

I'm talking more along the lines of mainstream computer processors. Granted, I probably should've said that, but I figured I was getting the point accross.

Do it in real life, I've done that once. Very fun! :D
