Maybe the wrong word "Rated" but Over hyped...Considering how much it costs how much it cost when it was new, and how poor it performs on the track....Not to mention it's one of the few cars where the Automatic version is faster than its 6 speed counterpart......I don't doubt the straight line performance of the 2jz-gte..and how much abuse it can take...but it still isn't as impressive as people make it out to be.

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

 oh my goddess...REALLY? :O The Automatic version is actually faster than the manual version? But how is that possible? Plz explain!

Also, does this kinda thing also have something to do with the Supra on the cover of the current Sport Compact magazine of that 9s Supra? Becuz it stated the guy is going to CONVERT his manual into an Automatic...? :odd: :O

Because, like all really good automatic transmissions, the automatic is more intelligent than any driver could ever be shifting manually. Or, to put it differently, the automatic transmission knows the engine better than the driver ever could. It's an engineering feat. Driftster ignorantly says this is bad (why, Driftster?), but it's really a pretty good thing because then you don't have to worry about shifting to achieve peak performance - the transmission does it for you. Off the top of my head I can come up with a few examples of other cars like this: Buick Grand National, 1993-1995 Ford Taurus SHO, and several old muscle cars.

Just from reading you intelligent reply to my question, so when I get my Supra in the next five years...I should get an Automatic instead of a Manual? :odd:

And also, since it is FEW cars that have the Auto version is faster than the Manual version, then why is it that the VAST majority of the counterpart of Automatic is faster? :odd: Srry, I am still a new person in car knowledge.... =(

Depends which you like more. The manual was only marginally slower than the automatic, and with the twin turbo, they were both flat-out cars (0-60 in five seconds). The difference is barely there (whereas in some cars it's crazy - the manual Volvo S60R, for instance, does 0-60 in 5.4 whereas its automatic counterpart does 0-60 in 7.2). Really, if you like shifting gears, go with the manual. Though I seem to recall with the Supra's manual that, when downshifting from sixth (on the track only, of course), I believe I shifted into third instead of fifth every time. It must take practice.

Mainly it's because the automatic is usually not as good as the Supra's, and, on most manuals, the gear ratios are set in a way that lend itself to sportier driving and quicker acceleration. Sometimes automatics have "sport" modes which change the ratios slightly in the favor of quicker acceleration, but only on sporty cars. Many performance cars (all of Mercedes AMG performance line, the Volvo 850 Turbo and T-5 and S70 T-5) have automatics as the only transmission, though, because, like the Supra's they're good automatics.

To MP5Power and Driftster: Just amazing with Automatic Supras....just totally shocked me....VERY badly :O:O Just when I thought I have to learn how to drive a Manual transmission later on to drive Supra and to NOW feel the pain go away that Automatic is slightly faster.... =( thank YOU!!!! :O:O:O

And also, does the year of the Supra matter? like is there a certain year the Supra Auto is faster than Manual?

Skylines! Over rated and overhyped.

Even in mild tune form or minnor mods they are not all conquering. Heck I've owned three including a GTR. While they are quick and for the size of the motor they are fairly powerful but in order to reach the ledgedary status it takes a LOT of money and they just are not fun to drive on the street as a daily car.

Over rated: Any BMW, Mercedes SL, Alfa Romeo GTA (It's still front-wheel-driven), Ferrari Enzo (ugly as ****, when is anyone whos not a footballer going to drive one) and the Evo VIII

Under Rated: MG ZT 260, MG ZS 180, Subaru Legacy (All the power of a WRX in a duller shell), Saab 9-5 HOT Aero

Couldn't agree more. A Maytag has more curves than that ****box on wheels (and the box part is literal this time  )

And Elstro, would you care to explain why the Evo VIII is overrated? It is one of the ultimate autocross cars since it offers great low end acceleration and incredible handling. It also looks great, has gobs of tuning potential, and it is quite affordable. And don't get me started on the Evo MR!

But I think the Ferrari 360 Modena is overrated. It is a very fast car, has godlike handling, and it is one of the best looking cars ever made. On the other hand, it costs as much as a new house. And it has the reliability of a Hyundai Pony. It costs a fortune to fix said mechanical issues too. And if you spend half the money that one 360 costs, you can get a good tuner car, and modify it so that it can outperform a 360 Modena.

Question! :O What are the factors that make your GTR not fun to drive on the street daily? Higher chance than alot of cars of being broken into? :odd:

Cost of repair if someone plows into you, theft, and vandels. It is a fun car don't get me wrong, but people seem to have this misconception that all GTR's are making 1,000,000,000 hp when in fact about only 15% of them world wide are making more than 700 hp. The majority of owners just can not afford to dump $30k into their cars to make them reliable at that power.

I love my R, and it goes well for what it is and the power it makes. However as time goes on and you own one, the constant matinance bills mount up horrificlly. When something needs attention it is $1,000 here $1,000 there. There are a lot of hidden bills people are not aware of, plus the fuel consumption when you do have a bit of fun. Considering it is only 2.6 litres or 159 cid it gets terrible milage when spirited driving is on. Add in high insurance rates and what appears to be a magnet for morons to hassle you in, rid your backside, and cut you off because they know you are not going to argue and risk damaging your car.

Well, the 1996 Supra Turbo didn't actually offer a manual transmission. So 1996 is automatic for sure (assuming you want a Turbo and not the base model). But otherwise any 1993-1997 Supra Turbo should be pretty much identical (though the 1997 15th Anniversary Edition was the reason the manual came back, so that's different, and a minor revision was made to the headlights and tail-lights in 1997 that allows you to tell a 1997 from a 1993-1996, but that's it).

By the way - have you driven a Supra Turbo? Or any turbocharged car? That turbo lag eventually gets to you. In the end you realise why all the muscle car lovers go on about how there's no replacement for displacement.

underrated- Enzo Ferrari
overrated-Mercedes

I wouldnt say that Mercedes cars are overrated, theyre pretty cool....just overpriced.

overrated- McLaren F1
underrated- Enzo Ferrari

WHAT?!

Ferrari is cool just because of the looks, the performance is nearly matched *nearly* by the Ford GT. So if anything it's overated. McLarens are just stupid fast.

icemanshooter23
overrated- McLaren F1
underrated- Enzo Ferrari
overrated-Mercedes

McLaren F1 overated??? - in what way, what could anyone possibly be dissapointed by with it?

Ferrari Enzo underated??? - by who?, i've never read a bad or indifferent review of it. It's a car that is justifiably the top of its class!

Mercedes overated? - possibly in some respects, but they are still the finest engineered and best put together cars on the road.

Yes but Mercs are driven by fat cats, and the E-class is jsut a Taxi - i went to Bavaria on a school exchange and the only E-classes i saw were Taxis!

The Enzo is stupidly overrated - yes its fast, but it's HIDEOUS

Enzo - It might be ugly, but that doesn't make it overated - cars are judged on more factors than esthetics.

Merc E-class - Yes they are used extensively for taxis, but you have to ask why that is... because they are cheap to buy and economical to run? - no. Or because they are big, comfortable, reliable, well built and have good re-sale values? - yes.

I'd rather be sat in the back of an E-class Merc than the back of a 'black cab' or those tatty Avensis and Primeras that pass them selves off as 'mini cabs' any day!
