Hey guys
Ive been playing GT5 and GTP for about two years and with a wheel for 4 months
I'd like to think im a pretty good driver except for one fundamental

Overtaking
Im absolute trash at it
Im so bad now that to spare other people i back off when im side by side at a corner

Anyways
I wanted to know what the actual methodsof over taking are on corners and anywhere else. I also want to know when, in the middle of a corner or anywhere on the track i should or the person im overtaking should give way

Also any tips on giving way when someone is overtaking you would be cool too

Sorry if a post similar has been written
If so give me a link

Lastly any links to videos or websites to help would be awesome

Thanks

You've been playing GT5 for two years? You should have a pretty major head start on the rest of us.

Normally, what I do is just hold my line. If someone is faster than me, they can overtake on the outside line (or the inside if I go wide). If I'm overtaking, that person isn't just gonna let me by. You have to wait until you can get by without going off and then take the other line. Hope it helps. 👍

GT5 and GT prologue ;)

And Thanks that helps

I also wanted to know kinda like the official standard for overtaking
Cuz i knoe F1 and le mans and stuff have rules when it comes to overtaking

Those are pretty much it. Unless if you are a lot slower you'll be given a blue flag in some cases which instructs you to give the right of way.

I took GTP as being a member of GTPlanet. It was all in good fun, not meant in a hurtful way.

To me it's simple: try to avoid colliding at any time.
I'd rather be 5th and have a clean race than 1st and put someone in the wall, even if it wasn't on purpose.

How I overtake? I try to stick to LeMans rules: faster drivers overtaking will go off the ideal line to overtake. If I use a Peugeot 908 to overtake a Golf GTI, the Golf doesn not have to go off the driving line. It's my job to steer 'around' him as simple as that.

Thats when driving cars with a big hp/speed difference.
If cars and drivers are equally matched, I try to watch how they drive. If they brake late, I try to brake earlier and hit the apex more perfectly thus overtaking them on the next straight with my top speed.
If they brake too early, I try to overtake them by braking later.

9 out of 10 overtakes I do are because my corner exit is better. I hardly ever out-break people because that often results in hitting cars which is a big no-no in my book.

My advice when driving a superior car: you overtake them, they do not have to go off ideal line.
When driving a similar car: watch how they drive, find weak spots and adapt your driving style to exploit those weaknesses.

Charge up behind, sit there, if they don't get out of the way, whack them and spin them off. Easy peasy.

Also, overtaking cleanly often involves an awareness or action by both people, not just the person initiating the move. No matter how good one person is at overtaking there can be a crash if the other person won't play fair or is oblivious. This is why one of the most important things is to find a group of racers you trust to follow etiquette.

A useful way of overcoming the poor visibility in GT5 bumper or cockpit view is to set the map to "fix to car" and zoom it in (I zoom to 2) so you can see at a glance where the other cars are around you. Once you know this you can change your line as and when you need to. 👍

The car attempting a pass is responsible of making the pass clean. The car being passed is responsible of driving predictably (Only change driving line to defend once). The car in front has the right to choose his driving line so no divebombing as the car in front has no way to react. When side by side both cars have to keep their own line, so no pushing the other car out nor cutting on the side of the inside car. Before attempting to pass it's usual in real life to present yourself in the defenders mirrors so he can avoid collision on his part, so don't try to do the pass from too far away (outside of opponent's mirror view).

The most commonly adviced method of passing is to concentrate on corner exit and do the pass on the straight. When trying to outbrake you have to be side by side before the corner entry. If you try to do it from behind that is called divebombing and usually ends up with crashing or if the car in front predicts you, you would probably just end up understeering out of the track and losing your position. (Counterattacking divebombing amateurs can be satisfying :P)

Remember this this, If you do overtake someone online and they end up in the wall/sand or grass because you have given them a nudge, Please do the honorable thing and concede your place back to them.

haha. this.

works.

Come in any room either myself or my mates are running and drive like that you will be leaving straight away.
Your the types of people that ruin online racing. Grow up.

I'm not great at passing either. I do always sit right behind their bumper which sometimes gets them nervous enough to make a mistake.
It only happened once where I couldn't stop in time and knocked the player out of the corner so I sent my apologies right after the race

^^ This is spot on IMO.

Most collisions happen as people try stupid late braking moves... which seldom work as everone thinks they can brake late. Much better to hang back a touch and focus on getting a super fast exit... which most times will allow you to drive past them on the next straight.

I use this method but also setting up myself on the inside line for the next 2-3 corners. If we're side by side and I don't have enough track or room to pass, I'll be able to hold the the inside line while they take the outside line. They'll eventually scrub some speed and I can take the pass cleanly. This is one reason why I hate 3-4 lap races since you'll lose 1-2 laps pacing yourself as you learn new driver's driving line and making your move.

Another option if you are having trouble overtaking someone is to pressure them. I did this in a room at The Ring last night. a couple of guys were being really dirty, ramming anyone who came near them. I held my distance and both fell off the track being stupid.

Then I found myself behind a driver that was quite good. i was a little faster but, he was blocking me. Again, I drove well, made no contact and he span off.
The person in front has more to worry about because they have to concentrate more and, keep an eye on you too.

Even though I finished 4th out of 10, it was a wicked race.:sly:

I find that braking early and getting a better exit is the best way, as alot of people just turn in on you on the apex etc.

What I have found particularly effective is latching onto the back of someone, then move into a position where you could overtake, this person normally gets nervous and brakes very late, running wide, leaving me to pass on the racing line.

The only thing to remember is never be in a hurry, if your faster then an opportunity will arise :)

PMSL. More likely a sudden change of mind considering there are several posts that dont condone your behavour. No hint of sarcasm or humour, I was only joking LOL come of it. 👍:)

There is a method that you can use called a "counter-attack."

To do this, you need a S-bend of sorts.

You make a move on the vehicle via THE OUTSIDE of the 1st turn. This will put you on the inside on the next turn. This only works if you are side by side between the turns.

That's pretty much how I always win all my random room online races. :sly:

This for sure, a quick nudge in the rear and off into a nice wall they go :P. Well, if they did a similar trick anyway, I know you shouldn't lower yourself to their level but heck, revenge is pretty sweet.

On a slightly more serious note though, here's what I do in say a 10 lap race (I don't see it as being much of a race if there's not a fair nice amount of laps);
1. If it's early race then just hold back, wait for them to make mistakes, see where said mistakes are and pounce when possible (as stated in #2), if no mistakes made, find where I'm quicker.
2. Beep the horn just incase they're unaware I'm there, be nice and close, closer if I've followed them as I know their braking spots and then pull past when possible, I have no problem pulling past on corners, outbraking or on corner exits, as if I use an outbraking manouver, I'll know how I can push the car and where the limit of the vehicle is.
3. Never hit the other driver, if you do it just shows sloppyness and lack of control.

Really if you're racing in a vehicle, you should know how to drive it, or don't use it. Let's face it, do you look better and do better in a 550pp car you can control, or a 600pp car that's all over the place?

1. Well overtaking on a straightaway is pretty simple and as long as you have enough room to get behind them, draft them, "slingshot" around them, and finally get directly in front of them, then you should have no problem overtaking people on a straight.

2. Overtaking in a corner can sometimes be very risky and challenging for the most part but the biggest thing is to try and take it faster and smoother than
the opponent in front of you and if you have enough momentum take the inside or outside of the corner to overtake them. Once again you must make sure that you are going faster than them and taking the corner more smoothly to guarantee your overtake without slowing you down or causing an accident.

3. Blocking someone without touching them can sometimes be okay but if someone is faster and smoother than you and you know your going to be overtaken, then just stick right behind them and put the "heat" on them until they feel it and make a mistake or crash. :D
