Sadly seems minor and third parties are also getting caught in this annihilation.
An exception is underway in Bradfield, on Sydney's North Shore. Nicolette Boele (IND) leads by 1,830 votes with 77.6% of votes counted. The ABC projects her to win 50.5 tp 49.5 after preferences.

Bradfield used to be an unassailable Liberal seat, and is full of wealthy consumers of Murdoch "news".

Brutal...

  • For the Coalition, Saturday night was like one of those gory horror movies where half the headline cast gets decapitated before the first act is over.
  • -
  • "The Victorian Liberal Party once again continues to find new ways to fail," said former Liberal state director Tony Barry.
  • -
  • Australia has fired Peter Dutton into the sun, taking much of the Liberal Party and its future with him.
  • -
  • Standing in the vapour wake stood a euphoric and unimpeded Anthony Albanese, whose campaign was as devastating, driven and determined as Dutton's was dreadful, deluded and doomed.
  • -
  • Albanese stands atop a dominant and remarkable victory that will surely change the country as profoundly as Bob Hawke and John Howard did in their time.
  • -
  • Australia's political centre has held — as disenchanted Liberal voters continued their drift to new pastures, turning their backs on bunyip Trumpism — paradoxically even as the political core becomes more fractured and diverse.
  • -
  • The Greens saw their own repudiation, with voters rejecting what they regarded as extremism, obstructionism and support for bad causes such as the CFMEU.

EDIT: - To explain the colloquialism “bunyip Trumpism” in the article. In this context “bunyip” means “imposter or pretender”.

All three major English-speaking democracies now have (mildly) "left-of-centre" parties i government.
Certainly, Trump is 3/3 in his 'endorsements' getting the other party elected.

Edit: The UK was always going to vote Labour in 2024 but after reading about this election's intial autopsy, it's quite staggering in both the Canadian and Australian election how far behind both centre-left parties were before pulling these comebacks.

While I'm not a big Albo fan I'd much rather him than the alternative.

Thank you Australia for not going down a similar road to the USA. Now Albo, do not bend the knee to DJT. Give the extortionist nothing.

You’re damn skippy! Dodging a bullet for sure.

I guess Mustangs and Rangers will cost a pretty penny moving forward, but at least things remain the same for a chance to rethink.

Pretty sure we get our Rangers from Thailand, so they'll be safe. If not, South Africa is another option.

No, he's damn Skippy 👇🏾:

Seems like the Everything Trump Touches Dies effect has reached halfway around the world to put paid to Dutton's career. Well done, Australia.

Correct me if I am wrong. But is this the lowest primary vote the LNP has ever received? Are you telling Dutton's nuclear plan that he would never answer any serious questions on and tax breaks for business lunches weren't vote winners?

It’s hardly surprising that the Libs shot themselves in both feet several times, at least it’s not a hung parliament which is a good thing.

What's so bad about a Hung Parliment?

It makes the two major parties actually have to listen to the representatives of the Greens, Minor Parties and Independants and prevent a Two Party System. A two party system mind you that both parties are owned by corrupt fossil fuel corporations (moreso Liberal)

New Zealand has had a Minority Government for the longest time and have a better Government than us (even when NZ Labor won the majority they decided to share power with the cross bench anyway, it was that benefitial).

Our last minority government (pre-Tony Abbott) was better than any majority government we had since then.

I think the lower vote for The Greens was mostly due to discontent sown by Advance Australia and others.

If the LibNats scared people away with the Trump parallels, and people were pushed away from The Greens and Independents by lobbyists, then Labor was the "safe" option for most people to vote in.

Not to mention, from what I've seen the greens actually did relatively well in the primary vote, with the preferential votes swinging the seats more in favour of labour this time around. Liberal votes will always preference labour over the greens if they fail to win the seat. Fewer seats doesn't necessarily mean fewer votes. Certainly not a win but not as much of a loss as certain people would like us to believe, I feel.

EDIT: Oh hey! Just as I said this, the preferential votes have swung back in favour of the greens in my seat!

EDIT 2: that original edit appears to have been a false alarm, the website bugged out :(

I don’t know the implications of this election result yet, but Labor holds the majority.

Huh? I just asked you why a Hung Parliment (and by extend Minority governments) is a bad thing, not what is going to happen. Its clear Labor won the majoroty here

I’m under the impression that a hung parliament is bad because there could be issues with legislation being passed making it take longer or something. My sources of information aren’t giving me the full story either.

You Aussies have such a sophisticated voting system compared to Canada's first-past-the-post system. However, unlike in the UK, the Canadian system actually produces pretty reasonable results This is a consequence of various historical & regional factors ... like having a pretty significant number of seats filled by MPs who don't actually want to be part of Canada at all. 🤔

The success of the Liberals in the Canadian election came mostly at the cost of the (sort of) socialist NDP. Many left-leaning voters abandoned the NDP to vote Liberal to ensure that they didn't split the vote and allow the Conservatives to win. I'm assuming this isn't something that needs to happen in Oz. This has meant that the NDP's charismatic leader Jagmeet Singh lost his seat. Sad, as he was a dynamic presence in Canadian politics and surely, he and his wife, Gurkiran were the most beautiful couple in world politics.

Quite the opposite.

Julia Gillards minority government was the government that passed the most legislation in Australian history: https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2013/jun/28/australia-productive-prime-minister

This due to the fact that she had to make deals with the Greens and other minor parties to hold Government and because of that she also had their full support in the Senate making it done faster.

If only the whole Carbon Tax scare campaign didnt catch on which led to us stuck with a decade of Liberal hell.

That previous Labor government had its issues, but was it for the better? How did it lead to the Liberal hell you described?

No AUKUS, far more backbone against Fossil Fuel industries, far less controversies of politicians looking down us (like Tony Abbot and ScoMo seemed to have done every day of the week.).

What led to the Liberal hell was mostly propaganda with the "Carbon Tax". While a lot of stuff were pretty good albeit not perfect, it was specifically hurting the big corporations and wealthy politicians which is how they farmed the scare campaign and people brought into it and have done a scare campaign against Hung Parliments ever since with stuff like "It doesn't get anything done" or "Minority Governments cause chaos" (even though none of it is true).

Add on top of what was recently exposed the corrupt sexism in Parliment in general which reveals how easy it was to go after Gillard compared to other Politicians even in opposing parties. Not to say Im a Julia Gillard supporter but its pretty stupid how other politicians can get away with much worse when they should put to the standards they put Gillard under (well actually I think every Politician should be put in a higher standard than even that)

The Liberal Party's election loss needs to be studied. How can they LOSE seats? How can Peter Dutton LOSE his seat? How much worse can it get? This is a party in tatters and I have totally lost faith in them. What a shame. Nobody knows what they stand for so they choose Labor instead because they know damn well who they are. Albo's spot as PM is unlikely to be squandered at this rate.

I'm not familiar with Australian politics but judging by the posts on this thread it sounds like people knew exactly what the Liberals stood for. They just didn't want to vote for it. ¯\(ツ)

Doesn't take much thought to realise that the party closest associated with Trump would look really bad by association. (Well I guess Trumpets are closer)

Though their bad policies and fixation on Nuclear Power just to delay to switch to renewables anyway to appease the fossil fuel corporations that own them instead of the citizens is almost like they didn't bother trying to get rid of the stigma they got after Trump. Of course people were going to Pendulum Swing the opposite direction and pick the options that get us furthest away from America as we can.

Liberals were a party that look liked the Republicans but ran their campaign like the Democrats

Absolute failure on their part being the worst of both America parties in their last election.
