Parents shopping around for new sedan...

My parents' old '96 Caravan is pretty much falling apart. Time after time we take it to the shop, if it's not this error, it's that. Nothing is actually 'fixed' on it, so my parents have decided to look into buying a new sedan.

The question is, which one? They want a medium sized sedan, highest MSRP they're going for is 35k Canadian! *that's around.....20K american.*

I think M5 would have some fun compiling a list of cars for me...:O

A new sedan for under 20k?? Well, you can get a Honda Accord for that, or a Mazda 6. Others to look at are the Mitsubishi Galant and the Nissan Altima.

35K CAD is more like 25K USD. Acronyms rule. According to xe.com $35,000 Canadian is equal to $24,979 American.

For 25K USD, you can get a very well equipped Mazda 6. I'd put that at the top of my list. A Passat might fit into that price range, but it won't be as well eqiupped as the Mazda6.

Get the Mazda 6. Unless your parents want something boring. Then go for the Camry or Accord.

5.0L V8 Power! Right Klos?

Sadly, a 2003 version will only have a 4.6L V8. With an amazing 220 horsepower. It still weighs 2 tons though.

 div you're funny.. hehe

Anyway... I don't think my dad would be interested in getting a Rotary...

Mazda6 sounds good, but is it spacious enough? They want a really comfortable interior...

Have you parents spring for a G35! I just looked it up and a base model would run you $38,000 Canadian. And that I'm sure would have a comfortable interior.

You should offer to pay the extra 3K bucks.

You should go ahead and get a Volkswagen Jetta. For that price you can get a Jetta GLS 1.8T whixh will only give 180hp and either a 5 speed transmission or a six speed automatic tiptronic tranny. For 1 grand more you can upgrade to the VR6 with 200 hp and eitehr a six-speed manual or 6 speed tiptronic tranny, this will either be the GLI or GLX respectively. Now do you want performance or do you want luxury? I wonder if I could help you out possible, I have to look into car sales from Florida to where your at. I can even get you a good deal I believe. Let me look into it for you :D

How bout both? ;-)

No.. it's mostly going to be luxury for them.... for me its performance.... *but hey, it's not my car!* I really don't mind sitting in a stripped down interior..

edit: Just checked vw.com *used canadian part though*

Apparently, it's not 1k to upgrade to the more powerful vr6 engine... its more like.... 7 or 8 k.... :odd:

I would agree that a Mazda 6 is a good one to get, but if they're looking for durability, which I'm sure they are after the problems with the last car, go for a Camry. My mom's b/f put 120,000 miles on it and it still runs without problems.

for a normal customer yeah it is, but you are dealing with the inside here. I work for Volkswagen Halfrace. I see the invoices everyday, it is just a matter of what transporting laws there are between America and Canada.

G35 is luxury AND performance.. AND pricey... :p

Just tell them it's worth it. It's only 3 grand extra. If you're going to be spending 35 grand you may as well go that extra step.

I bet if you looked you could find a used one with with very few miles on it for less than 35K.

You know me too well...

$35,000 Canadian buys a bit more than $20,000 US - in fact, it's almost $25,000. Going strictly on the exact exchange rate - $24,800 - I recommend the following cars in order:

1 2003 Mazda 6s

The 6s starts a just $21,200 ($29,800 CDN), and just $22,100 ($31,100 CDN) with an automatic transmission. It's loaded - 220-horsepower 3.0L V6, traction control, 8-way power drivers' seat, antilock brakes, air-conditioning, power mirrors, windows, and locks, keyless entry, a CD player, and an alarm. I personally recommend leather upholstery since you've got a bit of room with the price - leather knocks the price up to $22,960 ($32,321 CDN) with an automatic. Heated front seats and mirrors are $220 extra on top of that, which is a deal, but it's also worth considering if you want it enough or not. This is the bargain of the group.

2 2002-2003 Nissan Altima 3.5SE

Altima barely fits in to my price range - the 3.5SE manual starts at $22,600 ($31,800 CDN), and the automatic at $23,100 ($32,500 CDN) - but it comes with just about everything standard on the SE model. In addition to the powerful 240-horsepower 3.5L V6, it's got an AM/FM radio, CD player, 8-way power drivers' seat, air-conditioning, keyless entry, power windows, mirrors, and locks, and an alarm. Due to some creative 'trimming' by Nissan, it does not have leather, heated seats, or a 6-disc CD changer all of which are standard on the less-expensive 2.5SL (which comes with a less-powerful 175-horsepower 2.5L 4-cyl. engine). I recommend the T01-level braking and airbag package, which includes four-wheel anti-lock brakes, front-side airbags, and side-curtain airbags, which costs $800 extra - total price $23,900 ($33,644 CDN) with automatic.

3 2003 Honda Accord LX V6

Accord LX V6's are very well-equipped, not to mention distinctly powerful - they come standard with a 240-horsepower 3.0L V6. The V6 is only available on one LX model, which is equipped with anti-lock brakes, a 6-disc CD changer, power windows, locks, and mirrors, an alarm, and keyless entry. Standard LX's as well as base DX's come with an underpowered (compared to the class power leaders) 160-horsepower 2.4L 4-cylinder. LX V6's start at $23,000 ($32,400 CDN) with automatic, the only available transmission for the LX V6.

4 2001-2003 Volkswagen Passat GLS

Passats are recommended by every magazine and they win all the comparisons - I personally don't find them so rewarding, but they're good and my fourth choice. The GLS comes with just a 170-horsepower 1.8L turbocharged 4-cylinder, but it's enough to power the average-size car. GLS's start at $22,900 ($32,200 CDN) with a manual transmission, and $24,000 ($33,700 CDN) with an automatic. They come standard with dual front and front-side airbags as well as side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, air-conditioning, a CD player, keyless entry, power (heated) mirrors, locks, and windows, and a power sunroof. The safety features mean a lot, they have more standard than any other family sedan manufacturer offers even as options.

5 2000-2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT1

The Grand Am is something of an odd choice but I've began recommending them to people because they're competely loaded and fairly cheap. GT1 is the top-of-the-line sedan, starting at $22,900 ($32,300 CDN). It includes a 175-horsepower 3.4L V6, slightly underpowered, a CD player, a power sunroof, a 6-way power driver seat, anti-lock brakes, an automatic transmission, keyless entry, power mirrors, power windows, power locks, air-conditioning, and an alarm. Leather upholstery, which I recommend because it's cheap, bumps the price to $23,500 ($33,000 CDN).

This is a very competitive segment - be sure to choose wisely. The five above are the US favourites, though not in the right order, save for the Camry which I believe is now outclassed and slightly overpriced. It's farily unanimous that Mazda is now the maker of the best car in this segment.

You're mad. Base G35 starts at $27,800, exactly $3000 over what they want to spend. On top of that is any markup above MSRP, which there will be because of the G35's popularity, plus a $545 destination charge. You'd be lucky to get out under $29,500, which is a full $41,500 CDN.

Plus $540 destination charge, plus markup - same story with the G35. No way you could get out under $28,000 US, which is already $4000 more than they want to spend. STICK WITH THE BUDGET!!!! :p

Yeah, if he gave me a budget of 42K, I'd tell him to spend 45K.

I am mad.

Well, today my parents took my sister and I out for a test drive in the Mazda 6.

All I can say is, I have never seen my dad have so much fun in 14 years. He was revving the hell outta the V6. It was SERIOUS fun.

The test drive vehicle had the premium sound, GFX package, and the moonroof *which we didn't use, but what the heck*. The sound - great. Looks - nice. Interior - Very roomy, comfortable and has good looks.
Engine - Sounds great, good torque too!
