I've raced and raced many times online and every time I would catch a slow car in front of me but instead of him letting me pass he would just block me. Now i am not saying that this is unfair at all mates after all we r fighting for a position.
The problem with blocking is if you do decide to throw your car at me when there's a fast corner approaching, say like, Suzuka for example where there's plenty of those ( :P ), if you brake too early and I too late what happens (I crash into you and then you go bye bye). I've seen this happening many times over and over again, even with GTP members. I think I speak for everyone else in here.

So today I was watching LeMans 24hrs and then I noticed something AMAZING (MIRACLE , for me) that I was like wow, this could end this annoying thing for all of us afterall.....maybe GT should take note on this. Everytime a P1 car would go past say by a GT1 car....the GT1 car would give a signal either to the left or to the right depending where the car on the back was. Now it would be stupid to use turn signals while cornering the car.....(People this isn't real driving, sry) but it would start solving a lot problems when you r trying to pass this slow car and he just don't know whether you will go left or right (VISE-VERSA).

So if the car in the front knows that you are about to pass, he will give you the light (Left or Right) making it easy for you and him. All this means is, no more silly crashes while trying to pass someone and plus clean races since after this new update is hard to find anymore.

People also use this technique on public days on the Nordschleife. It works well, yet, I don't see how this is connected to the game, as there are no blinkers. And even if we'll have blinkers in GT5 (which I would appreciate), how is it going to solve your initial problem? The crashes you were talking about didn't happen because of a misunderstanding, rather than a battle for positions. Or did I get you wrong?

Also noticing how many drivers take pleasure in ramming you, i think they would indicate a certain way then ram you anyway

The majority of players don't know how to use left/right view.
Expecting them to turn blinkers is ridiculous...

Well I respect your opinion but I think they could make this even simpler but assigning 2 buttons on the top or something. There's plenty of default buttons that they don't even use at all. Plus the left and right view even though is a great feature (looking around the car only) doing this online at crazy speeds will either make you lose control of your, miss the timing of the corner or hit someone in front of you.

I was going to say the same thing. But on a side note, in GT we dont have different car class cars racing at the same time and so i highly doubt anyone will give space to another car if they are behind them. I will only leave the inside line open if you are at least on my rear quarter pannel, not if you are behind me. If a driver dive bombs the corner without being next to me going in to the corner i can guaranty there will be contact cause i am not going to look left or right while trying to hit the apex, that is trying to do too much with the limited view we have.

You got it wrong..if your fighting for a position it's fine but sometimes I would rather let him pass by me, not blocking him, which it will either have him get pissed off at me or crashing into me and taking both of us out specially when we are racing against 10 or 14 more people online. Since usually it's 3 laps or more, I think there's plenty of laps for you to make a clean pass.

I confess I was in situations where I was letting people pass, and indicating it would probably have helped. Nevertheless, I consider this one of the smallest problems of online racing, even if it would be a nice touch.

I've appointed myself judge, jury and executioner when it comes to comedy blocks. If someone decides to slam the door on me when I'm in the middle of an overtake or zig-zag in front of me on a straight, I pass them. End of story. Don't look back :trouble:

It's very easy to spot the difference between defending the line and being a pratt. Pratts get passed, simple as that.

Yes it's sad but true. There is a group of people participating in online race events who aren't attempting to simulate race conditions but will simply do whatever the game allows to win and this includes ramming and blocking. I have had situations where I have accidentally hit other people so I have stopped for them to reclaim their position only to have them ram me while I am standing still. So there are some who will do anything to win and others who think the game is about smashing the living daylights out of everything in sight.

Not sure where this light is. How does that work? This must be a feature of GT5 I haven't found yet.
Passing safely is all about choosing the right place to pass and driving accordingly. Just because I normally take a corner faster than the guy in front doesn't give me a licence to ram the guy in front. I slow down and bide my time until I have a chance to make a clean pass (while putting as much pressure on the guy in front as possible, of course). On the other hand, where I am slower than other drivers, I'll try to make room for the other driver to pass cleanly where possible by moving out of the driving line. I am not sure how correct my behaviour is but it is my way of trying to simulate racing conditions. When I am driving I use a view that includes a rear view mirror and try to keep track of where the other cars are with that. I have occassionally used the side views but find it a bit cumbersome and dangerous with eyes off the road ahead.

In GTR2, I have 2 of the quick chat keys set to "<--- Pass on the left" and "Pass on the right ---->", but I only use them when being lapped. (Actually, most of the time I don't use them as I think I make it obvious by my car positioning that I'm going to let them through)

It will be easier to use voice chat when we get it.

I doubt that....many will get headsets while some wont and personally talking while driving isn't good at all. I like to concentrate in what I am doing and having you speak to the guy go left or right....sry but I just don't see that happening. Plus people will ignore it.

It works well in forza and saying a couple of words in a race to aviod a crash is worth doing.

Oh yeah and I almost forgot about this amazing PC game called "GTR2" thats got this easy option but someone said it all!!! Thanks mate. :P

While I would love headlights and blinkers, things like exhaust-flames and all that stuff, voice chat will be very helpfull to avoid many 'situations'. Lets hope it really comes with the expected update!

They at least should put blinkers as an option just to make sure online gaming will be clean as possible!

Great Idea man. But you can't expect the majority of the hacks online to understand the concept of real racing. I too find the same problem online with passing..It is hard to pass when that person can't seem to get his car through the corners smooth. On the flip side, when I am being slow and someone wants to pass me I usually open up the bottom from them to go by. If I don't do that I get punted 9/10 times...

I do that too.....but still people get so close (too close) bump the side of my car and pushes me into the wall or worse!

i have been online for about 2 weeks now.... and i have run against some very very awesome guys trading positions etc.... awesome.. i have also run against pure dirt balls... only solution is to drive for the other person just as you do in reality.

i have gotten a few break checks lol.... when i drive against someone i know.. we know what the other will do.

One thing I noticed is that, rookies sometimes they feel nervous when they know there's somebody quicker than them. When I started racing online, every time someone would be quicker than me so I just didn't know what to do besides letting him pass me but sometimes that didn't work too well since I would get into him. I am noticing now more than ever, that people gets too nervous and just don't know how to react to that.

Reverse lights, anyone?

Considered that PD has never created simple, working reverse lights, I find it highly doubtful that they would ever include blinkers. But, that's just my own personal cynicism. Maybe it's because I just drove back eight hours back from central Tennessee. Oh, going a bit off topic here.

Anyway, if PD never thought it important to include working reverse lights, blinkers are pretty much out of the question. Also, what would we control them with? The Sixaxis would be a pain if you tried to use turn signals and the left/right looks. Same goes for driving wheels. I just don't see this happening; it's not important to the gameplay. Good racers will recognize when they have lost the line and will concede the corner without having to use signals, and rammers won't bother with the signals and will continue to punt at will.

I think everyone could pass more cleanly if there was a better feel for where the cars around you are. I would be happy if they simply implemented something which provides more peripheral vision. I drive with the G25, and the only two buttons on the wheel itself are difficult to reach, making looking left or right a real pain. They could also do this with audio, by making the sound of the other cars more audible than it currently is.

You have to anticipate the early brake. If they're going into the corner from the middle of the track, you have to know they are gonna brake early and take the corner slower. You have the slip stream advantage, so you don't have to tail gate them into every corner. Back off a bit, let them have that corner, then set up a better pass on the next corner.

BTW I race with the 1 block move rule used in Formula 1. If you're coming up behind me, yeah I'm gonna defend my position. I'm not gonna juke left and right, but I'm gonna make it real hard for you to pass me.

Agree completely - sometimes when I pull out of the way to let another car pass easily (and when there's an idiot driver behind me, to let them past without punting me off), they misunderstand and slow down themselves, which loses time for both of us. This particularly happens with good, patient drivers who aren't inclined to go for any gap available.

But yeah, it's by no means the biggest problem with online racing. The best drivers wouldn't really need it, and with the worst it wouldn't help.

Reverse lights? Why on earth would you need them? You shouldn't be reversing onto a track with cars driving at 100mph+ in the first place, having lights telling people a split second before hitting you is not going to help anything.

Indicators are not needed in my opinion, if you want to concede the place, just slow down a little bit when exiting corners and drive the normal driving line and don't block. This is what they do in real life, especially in F1, because you don't have brake lights or indicators.
I think people are a little too eager sometimes to give the place and end up trying to get out of the way by driving off the driving line, but this can confuse more than anything.

Basically, I think everyone needs to stop complicating the situation and just slow their pace a little and drive normally. You don't need to do anything special.

You missed the point a bit, the "reverse lights" comment from 91hondawagon was more aimed at PD never including something as simple as that in the "real driving simulator", rather than at the situation we're discussing here.

You would think, but racing online has shown me that it's not that simple. Like I said, I sometimes let people pass, for the most different reasons. Unfortunately, in at least 50% of those attempts, the guy behind me doesn't anticipate I let him pass. What this leads to are wild maneuvers of said people to avoid ramming my car, making them spin out or off the track, which I really didn't want to. Therefore, me indicating with my blinkers that I'm actually making way would make a difference.
