Paul Ricard, it could be said, was the first circuit purposely built to incorporate two concerns paramount in modern motorsport: safety and commercialization.
It was completely surrounded by then state-of-the-art Armco barriers with more run off area than comparable tracks. It was also built for winter testing and housed a modern hotel right at the track and was built with an adjacent airport, considerations that made it much more commercially modern than similar tracks of the era.
