PD sacrificed excitement for performance stability.

Please note that this is about single player ONLY.

I'm sure everyone knows that GT5 does not hold at 60FPS as well as its older siblings, which is disappointing (although easy to get over), but when PD removed Grid starts and positioned grid placements by performance points in order to avoid the AI from getting to clustered (which is very unrealistic considering real races have clusters all the time!) which both will drop the FPS (see license text S-1 for a perfect example), it makes the game less exciting (especially if you don't have a choice).

I understand these decisions made at the time, but they haven't done anything to make it better in over a year. Still can't decide how you want the race to start, how many AI to go up against, what cars to be apart of the race, and you can't adjust the AI's driver options. Incredibly BORING!

I'm tired of the race grid being set by highest PP to lowest (and you're always set last or in the middle), which degrades the chances for actual position battles between you and AI alike. The race always plays out as the race dog trying to catch the speeding rabbit while weaving through the turtles in between.

I got the idea to make this thread from the latest A-Spec online event set in the Nurburgring where the top one or two cars are given an unbelievable lead and have proven very hard to catch up to (for me so far).

What do you guys think about this?

You are spot on, and it's a travesty that PD has not realized how boring the game gets when all races are exactly the same.

You bring up a great point. There comes a point where refining the game to much hurts it.

That is correct. This speeding rabbit format we have right now is terrible. There is no real racing. I want qualification, standing start and many laps with equal cars and AI drivers that can prove to be a challenge. This is in my opinion the biggest problem in GT5 by far. The rest of the problems are way less significant than that!

I'm going to guess that PD have been so caught up in developing online for GT5 that they forgot to make offline. And then probably at some point they were so caught up in developing offline mode after realizing it was crap that they forgot to have the same physics engine for online as well.

I really don't see the problem here. If I were to qualify against AI I would always be on pole and would never have to make one pass. Yes even with lower PP and lower tyre choice. Improving the AI would make things better.

So I rather start at the back and work my way through the field as I atleast get to overtake cars. With the AI we do have it wont make it a race by try make it race like with qualify. That would only be a time trail.

And that physics online aren't the same as offline.. well maybe not, but if you set up a room with fuel and tyre depletion off and the physics are pretty similar in my opinion. But it should be the other way around, because with this off makes the car 100liter of fuel lighter and no tyre wear is just not real.

Regarding the AI...

It's not really a race (or even a challenge for that matter) if all you need to do is weave through some traffic to get to first in my opinion. But then again this is much better than starting at pole, where the AI will have no chance of catching up to the human racer whatsoever.

So yes, improving the AI will make offline much better. :)

I don't understand why Console sims don't do what many PC sims have done for ages. Let us decide how many Ai cars are displayed. I love GTR2 on PC and race a field of 30-40 cars (or even more, track permitting) but due to my CPU being old and slow I only display 20 cars at a time. Personally I'd rather be able to set displayed cars in GT5 to 10 and race a full 20-30 grid (including qualifying and proper race rules regarding starts). Those who don't like that could just continue to do what we currently have. GT5 Offline is the poorest GT in the series.

This is the problem. To win the race you need to have a car that can catch the rabbit, which makes the rest of the grid a bunch of moving road blocks. A more even field would be way more fun.

There should just be tyre and PP limits in every race with tuning disallowed apart from the tuned car championship and race cars obviously, or the computer should auto match your car for upgrades, tyres and PP.

The first would be easy to implement!

This. It has been done before with Shift 2. It matches your upgrades to the A.I., and it works fine.

F1 2011 has great AI, fierce, fast and closely packed. So IMO PD have NO excuse for the terrible level of competition. I play GT5 more than any other game in my collection by a long way and that's thanks to the great online competition available. The physics and graphics are fantastic but when I put F1 2011 in the ps3 on the weekend for a few laps around Albert park I realized how good the AI competition can be and it basically comes down to 1 simple feature... Difficulty !!! Set the difficulty to expert and BAM wheel to wheel racing. I just wish I could do that in GT5 instead of playing in beginner all the time.

Was it GT2 that had weight and power limits for a lot fo the races. So much better in my opinion, this is how it is controlled in real racing so why not the game.

You could then have a range of AI opponents ranging from a basic car up to the rabbit, which will be hard up against the Weight and Power limit, much like the car any beginner will be using.

GT2 had power and drivetrain limits. That was def nice to use. 591HP was the magic number in GT2.

yea i agree with just about everyone on this topic but i think its a lil too late in gt5s life to be fixing these problems... We know there working on gt6 already so lets push all this stuff for gt6

I'm so glad its not just me who finds the races where you hunt down the first 2 cars, while the rest of the field holds you up. Always catch the lead near the end of the last lap.. always programmed that way.
Its madness!

Single player/ASpec is terrible for experienced players but I understand it may present some challenge for the newer or less experienced drivers. It really needs two major changes:

1. AI's that drive like real drivers with appropriate braking points, hitting apexes and powering out, and the ability to run laptimes and racing lines that are competitive with good real world drivers. This should be easy enough to do.

2. Difficulty adjustments. 1-10 would be nice, 1-100 would be better, with 1 being a level of speed that most noobs can attain, and 100 being a world class, Time Trial kind of time, achievable, but only by the very best.

This would go a long way to making single player fun and competitive, instead of an incredibly boring grind.

I don't know how much you want from the AI. In my opinion every racing game AI sucks. If I want real competition or excitement I go online with my friends and race.

Forza 4 has the best Ai i've seen in a racing game.

Please tell me your joking? GT5 Arcade mode with the AI set to 10 on professional is way better than FM4 AI. GT5 A spec should have a level adjuster, but when I am looking for real competition I race with my friends online. 👍

Forza is my favorite game, but I disagree.

Especially when they leave the track at random moments and stick to the racing line so well that they ignore that your there.

Without turning this into a debate, one thing "the other game" did do right is allow you to pick all of the AI cars. On top of that you can have multiclass racing with them, set seperate difficulties per car, staggered starts, etc. If we had those options I would be in love with offline GT5.

There are other perks to that method as well besides pure racing. I used to have alot fun getting a slow hatchback, make the rest of the field Ford GTs or some supercar, delay their start by 30 seconds, then try to finish the lap without getting passed. Throw a friend in with you and you can have some good times.

This! I miss GT2 :(
