from what i saw on discovery channel this should be the perfect line correct me if i'm wrong
when you go in a turn go as close with your ass to the wall and the next turn as close as you can with your nose against the wall

there is no perfect line in drifting.. show drifting anywayz.. fast/speed drifts have the same line as grip perfect line, only sideways..

i heard about that too; i think it was a coverage of D1 competition, and the usual discovery-style explanation of drifting (history/tech).. if i know discovery, they are gonna replay it at least 3 more times.. sty tooned. =)

i dont know whats going on in the picture..

edit: nm i see it now.. i was looking from top to bottom :dunce:
the theory doesnt sound right tho..

i recorded it on my pc its a little big to put it on the net  1 gig its called drive or sommething but thats in belgium i dont know how it is in othere countries :)
but they said that was the perfect line to get as close as you can get with the rear of your car against the outside of the turn and then as close as you can get with your nose against the inside of the turn

The proper line is a racing line... Whether you are grip driving or drifting...

;)

Yep, it's all about tracing the corner. The racing line is the same for drift and grip. But appears different since when drifting the car is at an angle.

Hmmm... THIS is the line I would take If I was to grip those corners....

The quickest way to a point is a straight line....

I think it all depends. Some people like to take wide lines and others like to take Out-IN-Out(Grip line) lines with the apex.

The diagram does not represent a proper line for grip or drift... The proper line for drift/grip is much closer to what you have shown...

Also, the line changes slightly depending on what you are linking into...

perfect line..? for drift?

maybe for grip... not drifts..

Nah, there can be a perfect line. More so in speed drifting then exhibition drifting, unless your talking about mulitple links(3 corners or more) But I think it applies more to a specific situation rather then just racing line as in most grip driving.

That line is for show drifting I think.. look at the angle of the car..

No... The diagram is not a good representation of a good line for drifting... In fact, it is a poor line to take...

The line does not change much from race drifting to exhibition drifting...

;)

Hmm.. I'd be more in the middle for a safety margin if you know what I mean.

LOL I also looked from top to bottom and thought WTF?!

As for the perfect line, there isn't one! It depends on setup, the car you are driving, etc. What the perfect line is varies depending on the situation.

I wouldn't even say there is a 'very very good' line. There are lots of ways to take corners fast. If there was only one way, all fast drivers would take the same line. But they don't.

Yes, there is an ideal line on any given track for any given corner on that track. It's foolishness to think anything else. If that wasn't true, then why is it on every corner all the racer come within inches of each other trying to take the ideal line?

Yes there are different ways to take corner fast, but there is an ideal line. This line does depend on the car but there will always be an ideal line to follow on any given track and corner.

Maybe people drive within inches of each other in GT4 but they don't always in real life.

I was talking about real life. And you're right...but it's certainly less then a foot in many cases. If you don't believe that there is an ideal line to take for every car in every corner then what's the point of a racing line?

I hate to be a jerk, but it sounds like you don't understand the point of the racing line. That or I'm really missing it myself.

I thought showy drifting was to push the limits of the car... so pushing the uh... safety margin would be pretty nice looking. =P

As far as GT goes I totally agree. But if you're drifitng for real, it's always smart to have a margine of safety.
