Anyone else here doing a full system backup every few days to keep their GT5 save incase their system dies or am I just crazy?

My PS3 YLod yesterday iImanaged to dismantle it to rescue GT5, then re assemble it and use the hairdryer trick long enough to get it to backup he HDD, but it says that when restoring on another console some copy protecte ditems will not be transferd, i guess this means my Gt5 save ? i had got up to day 230 in the game and driven almost 1500 miles !!!!!

Put My name on that petition !!!!

When m first PS3 died I had a 60+ hr Dragon Age save I wanted to keep (it was copy protected) and I did a lot of research into how I could keep this save. I am led to believe, that doing a system backup will not allow you to use the copy protected save on another system.

Sucks for me cos Dragon Age2 let's you import your Dragon Age 1 save and I have lost it :( I don't want to lose my GT5 save the same way, cos I think losing the save would put me off playing the game.

You see guys, people are falling victim to this horrendous misjudgment already. Let's keep pushing for freedom!

Starte suffering this problem with STAR OCEAN THE LAST HOPE -INTERNATIONAL-. E-mailed SQUARE ENIX and they told me they had no plans for a patch...

I didn't sell the game because it was a gift (a Promotional White Blu Ray disc from SONY, I won a copy on a competition). After that... HEAVY RAIN had copy protection but with that game I didn't care: I finished the 100% of the trophies in 4 full days of playing so I finished all of the game and saw everything, I think I won't use it so much more.

But when talking about GRAN TURISMO 5... if I lost my golds on the licences... oh god... I can't believe they did this thing with GT5 too..

I have multiple consoles (work/home) and this really posses me off. I started at work and now can only play there as I don't want to start over. The thought of losing all of my data from a dead/stolen systems terrifying.

SIGNED!!

this needs removing soon, i back up my saves regular since a HDD crash, not to mention the 3 YLOD's i've had and i also have 4 ps3's which i use all of them and im not prepared to hae 4 careers on the go. I understand they dont want people cheating and thats fair enough, but why not just lock the game save to a psnID its been done before so is possible.

+1, I already had a PS3 fat that died with backups, but GT5 backups cannot be restored on a different system.... Boooh!

If it's not the case then why put protection on in the first place?
That is the moot point and what we are all asking.

PD would probably state something generic like 'it is to stop cheating'. I can think of a few minor 'abuses' that you can do with a backup save (please no-one respond to that and I am not going to discuss) but there will always be abuses in any game eg GT5 birthdays, and I can think of a few using online/community if all you want is credits and cars.

However I will not do that, it just does not interest me, but the thought of lots of work going down the drain when my PS3 dies... (eg gold licences, gold mission events) it is just is not right.

What is more important, someone working out how to get a little something for free, or many people losing hours and hours of work that cannot easily be re-done.

Tie saves to a PSN ID and remove copy protection so that when my PS3 dies I can carry on.

If you read everything I have posted about this issue you would know that i'm all for backing up saves. I'm currently on my 14th ps3 and I would be less than happy if I lost my gt save data.

I was simply stating that the reason pd/sony have put copy protection on the save is to stop cheating, there is no other reason why they have put it in.

The perfect outcome would be that we have either a cloud save system or that the save is locked to psn id. Both would allow for backing up saves and also stop cheating.

Sign me in. Wow I hadn't thought about this. Been so busy playing. I can't imagine my ps3 dying and having to start all over again. I could care less about my other games. But gt takes too much time to collect and modify your favorite cars.

"Cloud Saves" are just as stupid, as that woul dmean there would be NO offline game.

Keep the save encryted, just dont tie it to the PS3 hardware.

Simple solution to a slef-made problem that Sony/PD brought on themsleves.

I got to the extreme series and have stopped plaaying the games progress and just drive laps now as there is no point in building up a "career" that should be around for 5 years (the time it may take for GT6 to be released) if the career has no ability to be kept after the console dies.

GT5 ceased to be "the game to play" as of yesterday for us.

Can you use the backup utility to backup the save file? I have a flash drive that I would like to use for this purpose. Are you saying the backup utility won't work?

The PS3 manual clearly says:

"Back up data saved on the hard disk to storage media or a USB mass storage device, or restore data that has been backed up."

and

"Data can be backed up on Memory Stick™, SD Memory Card, CompactFlash®, and USB mass storage devices."

You can use the backup utility, but remember it is backing up all the PS3 so the device will need to have plenty of space. The problem with copy-protection is that the backup will only work on that PS3.

You can't select which files you want backed up? That stinks especially considering I don't want to backup demos and the 8GB install for GT5. Oh well.

I heard that people said it's tied to the PSN account, not the PS3. Can anyone confirm?

The GT5 Save Game is tied to the PS3 not the PSN account. Confirmed.

I'm talking about the backup utility, not the save game per se.

Restoring the backup to another PS3 will not restore the GT5 save (nor any other locked save). The only way to move the save is to transfer, which needs 2 working PS3s and it removes everything from the source console.

Oh so the only thing that the backup utility give you is peace of mind on a HDD failure?

Now I understand the problem. They really need to fix this.

Yes, just peace of mind in case of an HDD failure. If your whole PS3 goes, so does your GT5 save.

And for the record, we have had 2 PS3's fail but never a hard drive - go figure ;) hehe

Awesome. Hopefully it won't take long now.

Agree. Lets have that removed.

Although there is a solution: If you are suspicious that your PS3 is going to crash and buy a new one, you can still use the data transfer option in the XMB. It will let you transfer even the copy-protected files.
