I'd wait for the irons, any fitter worth their salt will book you in for a gapping session once they arrived and that can have some impact on wedges as whilst they won't be used all the time for full shots, gapping them and having the right continuation from irons is important.
Yep that's what my main concern is, that and I'd also prefer not to have everything new in my bag at once. I was careful in doing that between driver/fw woods and the irons.

I'll have a chat to the fitter when I pick up the irons and probably book in for a couple of weeks after that, at least gives me some range time and about 3-4 rounds with the irons.

Picked up the first of the new clubs yesterday, the 2 iron and the 3 wood. Immediately hit them on the range and am in love with them. Can't wait to get them out on course. Just the driver to wait for now.

New set looking good mate, finally got my original shaft in my driver and found some form, but now the swing has gone away from me, overdue for some driver practice which is really holding back my game 😂😂😂

Anyone here recommend a brand in particular for a launch monitor? Looking to get one for when I go to the range once or twice a week
Did you end up looking into this mate?
I didn't comment at the time as I couldn't give any advice (still can't) but could be interested in looking at one myself.

@Stavingo @Shaun

Rapsodo and Garmin are solid launch monitors for that sort of thing. Easily portable and not crazy in terms of price.

If you have an iPhone, Rapsodo MLM is a solid affordable and good performing option. Seen a few people using it, uses the fancy front camera on the iPhone, has radar, shot tracing, video capability etc along with all the usual launch monitor stuff.

If you don't have an iPhone. Garmin R10 is solid for the money or for a slightly more budget option the Garmin G80, functionality is a little more basic as a launch monitor but it also doubles up as an on course GPS/Range finder with full course mapping.

Also, I did another thing.

After telling myself I wouldn't, I ended up going for an iron fitting. They are doing free fittings in September as a Ryder Cup promo so figured it wouldn't hurt to find out, iron fittings are usually £50.

We hit Mizuno JPX925 forged and pro, Srixon ZXi5 and Callaway Apex Ai200. As you can tell by the teaser pic above, it was Callaway that won out, and quite comprehensively as well. Handily, my phone accidentally connected to their trackman and linked to my app so I have all the shots from the fitting saved to my app and could see clearly where the Ai200 improved on my Aerojets.

Spin rates, descent angles both improved as well and my miss strikes performances much better as well (they were removed from the numbers just to get a consistent baseline).

I didn't initially intend to buy there and then, and duly didn't. I got home and had a look at Callaways website and found that they had the Ai200 in the set makeup I was fitted for (5-AW) in the shaft I was fitted for (Dynamic Gold Mid 100 stiff) but they had them in an amazing looking finish exclusive to Callaway direct, and they had 20% off on their exclusives range which made it cheaper than I was quoted. So I pulled the trigger.

Callaway Apex Ai200 brushed copper. 1 of just 50 sets of brushed copper Apex available in Europe across all models. They look stunning, the finish is outrageous in person, retro Callaway logo on the toe, retro style Golf Pride Victory swing rite grips in a black and copper finish.

Hit the range with them yesterday, not my favourite range, quite the opposite but it is the closest (the balls are awful and feels like hitting rocks). Still felt great, if they can make those balls feel great and fly well then they'll be amazing on course, as I'd expect having been fitted for them.

So I've accidentally revamped my entire bag, except putter and wedges which have no need to change.

Excellent stuff @MagpieRacer , always enjoyable getting new gear.
The irons look stunning, enjoy.

My irons were supposed to be with me about now but got a call from the golf shop to say they are delayed. Apparently, there has been a big run for the new Titleist T series irons and Titleist are saying now it will be the 13th of October. Golf shop thinks it should be earlier, disappointing but it is what it is. At least I have clubs to play with so not all bad.
Lots been happening for me with golf, I'll put a post together later when I have the time.

Ah that's disappointing to hear, also not surprising in some ways as the new T series stuff really does seem to have hit the ground running. Especially the 250 and 350 models.

Look forward to reading what you've been up to.

New iron kit looks good @MagpieRacer

The dispersion chart based on your fitting made the callaways the most logical choice and everything aligned with the purchase, I would put that down to fate 😂

I did have a look but I’ve held off for the time being, may look to nab one near Christmas and hope a company phases one out on the cheap, I think the ones that caught my eye were the Rapsodo MLM2 and the Voice Caddie SC4 pro, but from my memory that’s more mid-high range depending on where you’re from 👍🏼

27 holes in the bag with the new clubs. 9 on Monday walking with my wife and then 18 yesterday. Too early for definitive iron data, they feel incredible though and the strikes have been solid and tight dispersion Vs the Aerojets. The longer clubs however have been sensational. Some highlights from the last few days:

Drive to the fringe of the green on a tight uphill par 4 with the 3 wood.

Nice straight bomb into wind with the 2 iron. Sadly ruined with awful short game skills.

Near 300 yard drive on one of my personal worst driving holes.

And an absolutely nutted 5 iron on a downhill par 3.
Screenshot_20250917-111201.webp

So far, so good. The 3 wood in particular is an absolute weapon, easy to launch, straight and sounds phenomenal. I also don't feel like I can hit a bad shot with the driver, despite my best efforts, bad strikes still work out well.

Glad to see the new clubs are working out well for you @MagpieRacer

Shot 5 over at the local track last Sunday, despite not hitting the driver well, having a solid back up plan in a 3 wood is really underrated in today’s game, I’ll take having a fairway ball losing 30 metres than slicing one into the trees punching out and trying to save par 😂👍🏼

@MagpieRacer awesome to hear the new gear is working out so well mate.

@Stavingo nice one mate on shooting 5 over, I don't think I'll ever get to that standard again. On occasion when I was playing 20 odd years ago I could but alas as I get older, I don't think it will happen again. Well done.

So a bit of an update on where I'm at. I'll break it down into sections.

I'm in deep.

Membership: Ok I've joined another club here, to supplement what I'll now call my home course. Cost was fine as it's a $150 joining fee then you just pay $17.50 a week, the sort of money you don't even notice gone really. What I wanted was somewhere close enough that on a whim I could just nip down and play either 9 or 18. This place fits the bill perfectly, years ago it was a pretty exclusive club that to gain membership you pretty much needed to be a doctor or lawyer. That became their demise and now it's a 9 hole course within a housing development. Thing is it's still very well maintained and a great little course for iron play. There are 4 par three's on the nine and you literally can play irons on the whole course if you want. More on this later.

Equipment: When I found out about the delay on my incoming irons from my fitter I asked since that's the case would I be able to fit for wedges? He said sure, we have a PW here in your incoming set to use also for distance as I explained I wanted the initial wedges to be an extension of the irons. So off I went and after once again hitting around 100 balls I ordered Vokey's in 48 and 52 in F grind along with a 56 in S grind. To my surprise because they were pretty much standard, I got a call 3 days later to say there had arrived.
When my irons arrive, I'll have room for one more club in my bag but not in any rush to fill it, after quite a few more rounds at my home club if I feel I need something I'll address it then. In all my years of previous playing I don't recall ever having 14 clubs in my bag.

General Play: I feel like it's starting to come back to me, still hit some terrible shots as to be expected but they are becoming less and less. To touch on my new course I played with my new wedges for the first time a little while back. I made to conscious decision to play 'smart golf' on the first nine and have a crack on the second. The first hole is a short par 4 which doesn't really, for me anyway benefit smashing a driver to leave it just short if hit very well. Took a 5 iron off the tee, followed by the 48 wedge to the green which hit the green and spun back off it. Next shot I chipped in for a birdie with the 48 so my first shots with the new wedges were an impressive strike with crazy spin and a chip in, instant fall in love with them and the subsequent play with them confirms it.
In the end the 'smart golf' first 9 netted me a 41 followed by the grip it and rip second 9 netting me a 47 .

Handicap: Still trying to fully get my head around this but it makes sense. As to be expected it's high and after submitting my three cards was given 23. Turns out as I'm sure you all know that's dependant on course and which tee. Back in my day you were at the whim of the grumpy old bastard you would hand your signed card into after each round.
Now I can be playing off of 27 at my home course (slope rating 132) on the black tees down to 22 off the front tees. The new course gives me 20 with a slope rating of 122. Seems to be a much fairer system compared to years gone by.
Only played the one comp since getting my handicap and they hacked .9 off to put me at 22.1, I didn't even play to my handicap scoring 34 points in Stableford and finishing 4th on the day, bastards .
I'm playing again at my home course tomorrow in the daily comp so I'll see how that goes.

That's cracking value, works out to about £8 a week here which would be incredible! £32 a month, man, if I had something of that value here I would be a member in a heartbeat, "cheapest" full membership around me is about £55 per month and that's a below average quality 9 hole course. Otherwise it's around £70 per month for a decent 9 or 18 hole course within 30 minutes drive. Currently I have 38 points left from the 100 I bought earlier this year for my current course, each point effectively has a value of £4.50, 18 holes in the afternoon works out to £9 and in the morning it's £13.50. So even compared to that, which I thought was good value, your course has even that beaten.

You know, I never got the hype around Vokey's, I did everything in my power not to get lured in by them, various Cobra and Cleveland 'forgiving' wedges over the last 3 years or so, then a couple months back found myself with an SM10 56 degree in my hand and discovered why Vokey's are so good/popular. I have a 56 with the D grind currently, at some point I may add the 60 degree with the 14.K bounce/grind setup, good for the soft UK conditions and bunkers. Need to really work on my 100 yard and in game first though. Brilliant that they have clicked immediately for you though.

Not sure I'll ever understand the handicap system properly🤣. 23 is solid for a starting point though. Mine has crept up through the summer as minor swing changes and comprehensive bag refresh have disrupted me somewhat. Currently at 21.4 having been down as low as 17.5 earlier this year.
