I used to have a dual boot WinXP / MandrakeLinux10 system, but I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and I can't boot to Mandrakelinux anymore. There may be some way of reinstalling Lilo on the boot sector so I can reboot to it, but I don't care. I only had Linux installed so I could muck around with it and see what it's like. It was also useful for practicing some command line Unix stuff I was learning at college.

I had about 40Gb currently dedicated to Linux and I'm thinking of trying a new version of Linux.

What do any Linux users here recommend?

edit: I'm looking for a distro which is easy to install, which will sit alongside Windows nicely and which doesn't have a steep learning curve and which is pretty newbie friendly.

I had no troubles whatsoever running dual-boot with XP Pro and Mandrake 10. Installation was a breeze. I would've used it more, but all the commands I had to learn turned me off to linux. Ask rjensen11. he helped me a lot with linux.

The only Linux distro I've ever used was Knoppix and that was on a Live CD. I've got a copy of Linspire 4.5 laying around that I've yet to install. I'm thinking of reformatting my drive anyway so when I do I'm probably going to do a dual boot. 👍

I might go ahead and reinstall Mandrake 10. As you said, it was a breeze to install and it sat alongside an existing Windows XP installation without any problems.

I was just curious to see what experiences people had with other versions of Linux and if there was something better than Mandrake out there.
