Jordan-Can you allow us to have pictures in the signature? I'd like to put a couple of small animations in my sig that won't fit in the avatar. You could make a size limit and stuff. So, what do you say?

I think thats a cool idea MazKid, I hope it goes through!!

Just think of all the Pic's we could have then... :D

It wouldn't be bad if there were limitations on Size, like your avatar.

I'll consider it, but it will only come with size limitations. Forums that do allow images in signatures are always a real pain for 56k users like myself.

I'm a 56K user too, but my connection only goes to 28.8k for some reason. I have some loading time slowdown, but if you limit the size to like 150pixels or something, it wouldn't be bad.

well, still not able to put a pic in the sig, I hope you're still thinking about it.

Its always about you! Like your the webmaster or something! :smilewink

I turn off signatures anway. Also, there is an option for viewing threads with the images as links instead of inline images. There could be a seperate option for people who want to view signatures, but not the images.

Personally, I think signatures are a bit hoaky. I'm not really sure why I made my own. Most people make some gaudy signature with huge text and ugly colors. It's quite a turn-off for new members who don't really give a rip about what's in the signatures, and are only looking for information about GT3. I've gotten used to scanning through all my configuration options for ways to turn that sort of thing off, but most people don't even think to look.

My $0.02

The way I view threads also gives GTPlanet a very consistant, clean, attractive look. Which, I imagine, is the way Jordan intended. When the webmaster gives the viewers the option to essentially edit their website without limitations, the common 'look and feel' gets throw to the wind.

My other $0.02

Man, this is starting to get expensive ...

The thing with signatures on a site like GTP is that if you're positng a really brief message, the sign is often much bigger than the message itself, which isn't good. This is one of the reasons why I changed mine recently, although it's still not exactly svelte! I'll be changing it again in the near future. I think it's something that people should watch out for, and so I suppose I'm not really into having images in the sig.

Yes, but as a webmaster sometimes you need to let these things go, because it's all personal, and what rocks to you might look crappy to someone else. By including config options, you're saying to your audience "This is what I think looks good, you may disagree". And it's all to do with setup as well - I would wager that some have difficulty reading the text at its standard size here, so an option to configure the text size would be welcome for them.

For the webmaster it's about welcoming in as many different people as possible, and making the site as accessible as possible.

But I'm rambling now, so I'll shut up!

True, and that's partly what I was hinting toward. As I've stated in other threads requesting changes to GTPlanet ... the more -options- we have, the happier we are, but everything should be an option. I'm happy with GTPlanet just the way it is. If we were forced to view signatures (or something similar ...), I'd probably stop coming back. Working at an advertising agency with 25 creative types for nearly 3 years has made me much more aware of the asthetic value of things. Also, being the system administrator of said agency has made me realize the diversity in opinion over just 60 people. They like to customize the heck out of everything! It's amazing .... So, it needs to look good to the new people, and offer them option to improve the way they view it. The initial look and feel need to remain fairly consistant, which is not possible when you're allowing a couple thousand people to make changes. The proof I have is the website for the university I work for, http://www.uca.edu

The consistant look and feel doesn't reach beyond what the webteam created. Each department makes their own website, and thus their own look and feel.
Examples:
http://www.uca.edu/divisions/student/postoffice/
http://faculty.uca.edu/bearmail/
http://www.uca.edu/divisions/academic/graduate/

I mean, where do they get this crap from? There needs to be some kind of enforced 'quality of service', which we are currently working on.

Heh heh! Good luck getting that one through! I've tried in my current company, and in my last company, and the people who have contributed to the relevant intranets aren't interested in the content, more in injecting their own personal 'style' into the presentation.

If I had my way, the whole thing would be PHP/SQL based, and they'd have to enter plain text!

My sig is ok isn't it? I mean, the colors are good, and it looks nice. I've seen some sigs at other forums, and they are terrible. Big pics, too much text......I don't mind the sigs.

I wouldn't know, I've never seen it! HA HA!

That's too funny, it's EXACTLY what we're working on (: There are lots of software packages to do what we're thinking about, and since we're a government University we'll be getting cool discounts. They're refered to as "content management systems". Supposedly there is a big market ... gee, I wonder why ...
