Pilgrimage to Nürburgring

Renting for 4 weeks will likely still wind up to be cheaper. I know for a fact that several major companies have month long rental periods. You just have to find one that has a car you like. Over here, it costs under 2 grand for a full size suv... of course, that's straight from Alamo without discussing terms and asking for discounts. Shop around, you'll find it cheaper. Keep shopping around and you'll find yourself a nice, sporty car available to rent for a long period of time.

Between taxes, insurance, and all that fun stuff, you'll wind up paying a **** ton more to buy the car in the UK and resell it.

I reckon if you could find someone in the UK you trust, you could sort this no problem.

Send them the money. Get them to buy the car before you arrive and sell it after you leave - making sure it's got tax and MoT. Get them to insure it, with you as a named driver. This gets around every single possible aspect of needing a UK address/driving licence.

WIsh you lots of luck in your pilgrimage, somone has too much money to spend :D

Be sure to keep us updated.

i'd rent a 'normal' car from Avis, Hertz etc, then rent a proper 'ring' car for your time at The Ring.

No need to bother with buying and selling or sorting out insurance - all of which i suspect you'll find hard with no fixed UK address.

A car set up specifically to be used at the Ring is always going to be safer and more enjoyable then trying to thrash around in some softly sprung general hire car.

We have given up on buying a car in the UK as it was going to work out far more expensive than we had anticipated. The Brits get owned when it comes to second hand car prices!

Instead we are renting a car (Golf GTI or similar from Europcar) when we arrive in Berlin and will use that to cart us around Germany and also do a few laps around the 'Ring. We have also booked a ride in the Ring Taxi so we can see how it can be done!

I can't wait now!

I would love to, but I already had to put it back because of work commitments. But if I win the lottery between then and now you can guarantee that I'll be on the phone to the travel agent! Swiftly followed by the Porsche dealership. :D

I'm not sure if that's adviseable. I think someone said it before, so I'll repeat: Some car-rental services in Germany specifically forbid the Nurburgring, even if not specifically - unrestricted tollroads or other workarounds - but I'd double-check their policy. Some companies are even known to have photographers catching their cars on track, then billing the customers for stuff like increased wear on the car.

Hmm thanks for the tip. I asked the travel agent about it when we booked the trip and she said that it was ok as it was classed as a toll road. But then she was probably just interested in getting my money.

You're a NZer! Do it the Kiwi way:

Take the car on the 'ring, and say: "She'll be right. ;)"

If you crash, regret it and feel sorry for yourself. If not, no harm done. :D

That's how we roll. :sly:

+1 (if it still existed) Common sense tends to fly out the window when my friend and I go on holiday so I can see it going down like that. :D

You have enough money to just "buy" a car that is worth taking around the 'ring?

Dammit you, buy me a flywheel or something.

I suggest some kind miata-type.

Or an old m3 if you can afford it.

He has to. Rental companies in Germany are very strict about folks taking their cars to the 'Ring. The only other choice is to get a ride with someone or take his own car.

BTW Gash, bring some dough for the 'Ring Taxis. 👍

Own car is a no go, based on the purchase price and hassle associated with it. We are definitely doing the Ring Taxis, but I might have to look at renting a Ring Car when we get to Europe. The travel agents in New Zealand aren't very good at that sort of thing.I'm sure the Golf will still get a good seeing too on the Autobahns though :sly:

It's been a couple years since my adventure, but there might be Rental Companies who let folks rent cars for the 'Ring by now. If there are, that would be your best bet. And always keep a look out in the parking lot. Lots of rare vehicles have been spotted there that the cameras never caught on the track such as a 512BBi racer.

There are a few "clubs" around the 'Ring, I recall reading, that offer cars for hire - from MkII Golf GTis to Porsche 944s and back to track-prepped MkIV GTis with a diesel. Would be expensive, but I guess that'd be better than paying Avis a few grand.

Kia Ora Gashlycrumb. :)

I’ve made the pilgrimage to the ‘Ring, twice.

You’re getting some good advice from the guys here. TheCracker’s suggestion is one well worth considering:

In the past, I’ve rented a car in a neighbouring country and used it on the track. I chose SiXT as they have some rather nice examples of, arrrh, ummm, cars that will lap the ‘Ring at a healthy pace.

The place I stayed, called the The Ringhaus is not only 400 metres from the track entrance, but also rents track cars at a pretty decent rate.

And if you want to make you you catch a ride on the RingTaxi, contact BMW NZ before you leave to see if they can help you out. I've not been succesful getting a ride in the M5 yest, but there's always next time. :)

Don't forget to take some paint. Check my sig and you'll get my drift. ;)

yep that is true rental company are sending people to the nurburgring to see if thier cars end up there.also iirc you can only ride in the taxi if you book in advance (ive heard its something like a year in advance?) but if see someone going out with some spare seats you can offer them the money for the seats.

going this year taking a belguim bmw 120d hire car :)
