IGN
May 12, 2005 - In a surprising twist on the next generation hardware race, a Sony representative has stated that a year 2005 release for the next generation PlayStation is a possibility. Responding to questions from Jiji news service, Sony Chief Financial Officer Takao Yuhara states, "For the year end sales season, simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have."

Most industry speculation calls for a next generation PlayStation release in 2006. Sony's third party developers have backed this assumption up with a strong list of PlayStation 2 titles planned for the rest of the year and early next.

The state of the next generation PlayStation software shown at next week's E3 show should reveal if a 2005 release is a possibility for the new system, or if Yuhara's comments were designed to take some steam out of Microsoft's Xbox 360 unveiling later today.

I don´t think so....

You should know, if you don't already, that IGN is full of crap. Never trust a thing they say.

Sony have said late 2005 was possible but highly unlikely. I'm guessing February to March 2006 for Japan, and early June to July 2006 for US.

Some other websites have posted the same news about this. Actually I saw this on a Brazilian forum at first, quoting GameFront.

Not to mention the new blu-ray format (if I got the name right)... isn't ready yet...

The first that come out will probably be extremely expensive if they don't nail the blu-ray thing... (Sorta like the DVD when it was introduced)

Blu-ray is pretty much ready. What Sony is doing still is talking with Toshiba to make Blu-ray compatible with HD-DVD. That way, we can either purchase mega storage spaced Blu-ray movies or the HD-DVDs for our players. But, Sony denies that is what they're doing even though many have said for weeks that is what's going on. I hope it's true. I don't want to be stuck with Blu-ray discs for my computer and PS3, then needing to buy a HD-DVD player just for watching movies.

Uh later... I am still enjoying my PS2 and I um... don't have $. :indiff:
Actually, earlier they come out, we can hold off until the price drop......... then again, this is not possible. As soon as GT5 comes out, we'll all give in. Just like how we did with the GT3 & PS2. :guilty:

If Sony camp and Toshiba camp doesn't work something out, it's us the consumers who'll lose. 👎

duh... yeah that's true! 💡👍

I thought they came to an agreement? They are using Blu-ray disks with Toshiba programing or something (it should be somewhere on IGN I believe)

Eitherway new formats always come with expensive hardware to read em so I'm a bit worried... (I bet I'll have the money... Just reluctant to use so much!!)

I hope it comes out before 2006 April... I have a exchange policy in Bestbuy that last till then... I was planning on returning my PS2 to pay for the PS3 but I don't think I have a chance.... :yuck:

As soon as it comes I'll import it, no matter if 2005 or 2006.... I'm really excited about the E3 ... hope to see a lot of PS3 footage.... Personally I also think the PS3 will be released in Japan in the first quarter of 2006...

I rather see they take some more time to make their new machine perfect instead of making it a rush job to get it out together with the new X-Box.

I'm fairly sure they've been working on it since before the launch of the PS2... I'd hardly call that a "rushed job" ;)

Judging by the speed at which the next gen xbox has been pumped out I would hope that sony would be quick to react but with loads of info comming in about the 360 and not even one picture of the PS3 you start to wonder if the PS3 will come out even in the next year! :indiff:

I haven't set my mind on a PS3 though, if both are out and the X-Box 360 is better I won't hesitate to buy that console. Hell, maybe even the nintendo one might get me interested.

Yeah me too. I´ll wait for all of them to be released before chosing the right one for me. I´ll have to wait some time anyway because the price here will be too high on the release date.

Hardware is nothing without software. Zero real world PS3 games have been seen so far. If there are at least 6-10 games ready by December then it can happen.

I'm not really concerned when either ... errr, any (assuming Nintendo will actually contribute this round) of their launch dates. There is absolutely no need to waste an extra $150 for the inital release of a console. Generally the games are pretty crappy and the hardware is buggy. Like everything else in the technology world, I like to wait for everyone else to go through revision releases until they finally make a product that doesn't suck and then I buy it.

I doubt the ps3 will appear just yet. Afterall, the slim ps2 hasn't been around that long yet, and we're still waiting for the psp.

Where do you live? PSP was released months ago.

Europe probably :(

The PS3 will be released around Xmas, and I doubt it will be this one... Major disadvantage in the console market if you ask me, but I'l never buy a Microsft, because it'll mean I 'l have to buy a few games as soon as I buy it.
