It's only a first glimpse.

I think they will show the design en have a video presentation or something.

As for when it will be for sale, i think a year later (or even more).

I will get one for sure, let´s then see if the next-gen consoles can move us further in gaming experience. I´m patiently waiting. But hey! GT4 will do just fine for a while.

Theres no glimpse, its more like just talking about sales. I don't even want to read it until I see what its gonna have instore for their customers.

Which I see this thread is in the wrong forum. Someone needs to move it.

I just read the news on another site and it said that the Playstation 3 will be at E3 2005.Sony will be showing it's capabillities to the public for the first time and i personally can't wait.If the info i read about 'Cell' is true then the PS3 will be an awesome piece of technology. It very likely that Nintendo and Microsoft will be there will their new consoles. The Nintendo Revolution and the Microsoft Xenon(both names are codenames and may not represent the final product ID).

ps.
This topic belongs in the Playstation 2 or the General Gaming forum.

Uh, last I hear a few days ago was Q1 06

If that is true, that is rubbish planning by Sony. I would have thought q4 05 might have been a better time to release, after all there is some kind of holiday around then ;)

Cheers

They had said at the E3 Press confererence which was around 1 hour long, that the new architecture of the upcoming technologies will incorporate a new form of chip called "THE CELL" and that it could be implmetted into the design of Playstation 3.

The chip is co-engineered in a collabaration with Toshiba and IBM.

CELL Chip Info

👍

Nope.
Sony will be concentrating on the PSP in 2005. Guaranteed.
The "Cel" technology is being developed by Sony and, of all things, IBM.
PlayStation3....middle of '06 at the earliest.
XBox2? Recent words indicate it may be out 8-9 months from now.(Q2 '05)
Bad move on the part of MS if you ask me.
XBox is just now beginning to have some really great games come out.
And they claim it will not be backward compatible.
Another bad move.
PD confirms that GT4 will be the last in the series for the PS2.
MS should wait a couple years and let the developers really begin to push
the XBox and establish a library of quality games before they are forced to create games for a whole new system. Otherwise, a lot of XBox owners won't be able to play the best new games.

Xbox never claimed to not be backwards compatible I have no idea where you read that. The only thing they are thinking about removing from xbox is the standard HDD.

So what are the specs on this "cell" thing? According to the lates Xbox info, XBox 2 will be powered by three 3.5+ GHz IBM PowerPC cores, built onto one silicon die and a 500+ MHz ATI graphics processor. XBox 2 will have 256+ MB of unified memory and run a custom operating system based on Microsoft Windows NT, similar to the Xbox operating system.

So far there have been no confirmed specs for the Playstation 3,so i'm just going to post some other information regarding the Playstation 3.

Introduction

The PlayStation 3 (also known as the PS3) is the upcoming gaming console from videogame manufacturer Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) which is a department of Sony. Similar to it’s predecessor, the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation 3 will move closer towards Sony’s goal of presenting an entertainment system available to the general masses. This goal will not be met, however, during this generation of gaming hardware. This is mostly due to the fact that the cost to Sony would be too great and those costs would then be reflected onto the consumer. In order to design the PlayStation 3 such entertainment system qualities as a TV tuner or DVD burner, the price of the console would skyrocket out of the reach of a great majority of the intended audience. A more likely scenario is that the PlayStation 3 will have the ability to physically upgrade to include these devices or even releasing a new entertainment system with these components further into production (i.e. PSX).

Processor

In order to design the most powerful processor possible with current technology, Sony formed a partnership with electronics giant Toshiba and supercomputer expert IBM. Together, the companies have assigned a team 300 engineers and are spending (an estimated) $500 Million to develop a new type of processor which has been nick-named the Cell. The processor is actually a collection of smaller processors. Software packets, called “cells”, are then sent to each of the smaller processors in order to give instructions on what tasks to perform. When implemented optimally, the processor will be able to calculate up to 1 trillion floating point calculations per second, which as you would imagine, is better than any standard computer processor.

The PlayStation 3 is not the only application that will use the Cell, however. Sony and Toshiba plan to make use of the chip in many common electronics, including household appliances. This combined with the possibility of shared computing could result other PlayStation 3’s, or even your toaster providing extra computing power to your PlayStation 3 through a broadband connection. The chip has been designed in such a way to provide opportunities for such innovation.

Memory

Memory is an extremely important component to any computer system, and Sony has already ensured that the PlayStation 3 will contain some of the best memory on the market. Sony has licensed XDR DRAM for use will all of their Cell applications, including those of the PlayStation 3. XDR DRAM was developed through a joint effort by Elpida, Toshiba, and Rambus and will offer a bandwidth of at least 3.2 GHz (which is eight times that of today’s best-in-class PC memory). The architecture allows the memory to be expanded up to 6.4GHz, so it is unclear as to which bandwidth Sony will choose. There has also been no mention of how much memory Sony will choose, as that strongly depends on how much on-chip memory they decide to delegate.

Broadband Connection

The next incarnation in the PlayStation series will most likely feature a broadband modem. Broadband internet service is spreading rapidly over the United States, Japan, and parts of Europe with a minimum of 50% coverage by the time the PlayStation 3 is released. Online console gaming is becoming more popular by the day and Sony has already shown support for such gaming on the current PlayStation 2. If shared computing is implemented, a broadband connection will be necessary to benefit from other systems in standby. A dial-up modem will most likely not be included as the demand for such a device is rapidly declining and in all likelihood, games will not be able to transfer data quick enough over a phone line for online gaming.

Hard Drive

With the recent trend towards downloadable content and online gaming, it is almost certain that Sony will include a hard drive in the PlayStation 3. Upcoming games like SOCOM 2 and GT4 will make use of the PlayStation 2 HDD (hard disk drive) and games like Final Fantasy XI require such use. Sony is making an effort to get PlayStation 2 owners to adapt to using a hard drive, and it is reasonable to assume that they will continue with this mentality to include a hard drive in the PlayStation 3. Combined with a broadband connection, the hard drive could be used to download music, movies, and even game demos. By including a hard drive, Sony will be opening up an entirely new avenue for gamers and media enthusiast alike.

Memory cards will most likely be a thing of the past in favor of the more versatile Memory Sticks. Already designed into the upcoming portable gaming unit, PlayStation Portable (PSP), memory sticks allow for data to be transferred from a wide variety of electronic devices. By using memory sticks instead of memory cards, the PlayStation 3 will be able to share data with computers, digital cameras, and any other devices which uses memory sticks. The main use of the memory sticks will be to transfer data between devices rather than data storage. The majority of storage, including game saves, will be done on the hard drive.

Controllers

For the past 8 years, the PlayStation’s controller hasn’t had any significant design changes. The controller is comfortable, the buttons are well placed and it adapts successfully to many different styles of games. We think, and most of you would agree, that Sony hit the nail on the head the first time. Personally, we don’t want any changes to the PlayStation controller and judging by our recent controller poll, neither does anyone else. There could be some small cosmetic modifications – soft grip pads, molded handles – but other then that, we really don’t see the need to change the controller at all. From a technical point of view, their might be some changes that need to be done internally in regards to wiring or the mechanical composition, but we can hardly comment on information we are not privy to. A majority of gamers refer to the Dual Shock controllers as the best in the business which is why, in this case, change might not be a good thing.

Release Date

Possibly the most talked about and controversial topics on the PlayStation 3 involve the expected release date. Some analyst predicted the release to be this year in order to get a head start on the competition; we laughed. Others concluded that the Cell chip would not be ready until 2007, and therefore neither would the PlayStation 3; we laughed again. The fact of the matter is that no one really knows, but we can make an estimated guess using what we do know. There will be a demo of the Cell in March 2004 and mass production of the Cell by Sony will begin the second half of 2005 (Toshiba predicts their mass production to begin early 2005). All these facts point to a release date of either late 2005 or early 2006.

A few companies have made it public that they have yet to receive any next-next-generation development kits from any of the big three. They also commented that they expect to receive these kits soon if a 2005 release is to occur. Sony has begun a test line of Cell manufacturing which could lead to the manufacturing of development kits very shortly. As the hardware development continues, a better idea of a possible release will emerge.''

Just found this.
Sony to unveil PlayStation 3 early next year
By Tony Smith
Published Tuesday 13th July 2004 10:46 GMT
Sony will unveil the PlayStation 3 early next year shortly after its PlayStation Portable (PSP) goes on a sale in Japan and just before the handheld console ships in the US and Europe, the consumer electronics giant revealed yesterday.

While most press reports have centred on Sony Computer Entertainment chief Ken Kutaragi's comment that PS3 will make a public appearance at next May's E3 games industry show, it's clear from the Sony roadmap that the console - simply dubbed 'next system' will debut well into the second half of Sony's financial year.

FY 2004 ends on 31 March 2005, putting PS3's unveiling sometime in the January/February 2005 timeframe - well ahead of E3, which takes place in the second month of Sony's 2005 financial year. There

As expected, PSP will ship in Japan mid-H2 of FY 2004, ie. next December. The roadmap puts the US and European release in March 2005, again as anticipated.

While the PSP's sale dates are on the map, no such date is provided for PS3. Interestingly, version one of the PS3 software development kit (SDK), doesn't appear to be scheduled to arrive until April 2005, followed by version two early in the second half of Sony's 2005 financial year (ie. October 2005).

Sony's roadmap reaches to the end of FY 2006 - March 2007 - and we expect the PS3 to be launched well before then, probably March/April 2006 in Japan and December 2006 for US/Europe.

Sony has already begun sampling its 65nm Cell micro-processor, which will power the PS2, and has pledged to ship workstations based on the wonder chip by the end of the year.

The E3 showing will take place alongside the first appearance of 'Revolution', Nintendo's next-generation console, a move Sony's rival has already confirmed. Microsoft may be planning to unveil Xbox 2 later this year, at September's X04 European industry event, according to some reports, with working models showing at next January's Consumer Electronics Show or possibly Games Developer Conference, a few months later. Either way, it's a good bet Xbox 2 will also be on display at E3. ®

Actually I beleive that I must apologise, slightly... your info is new... therefore I was a little harsh... however it could be added to the existing topic that I gave you...

Hopefully a MOD will merge the two and remove these three useless posts!!

Lucky for you, yeti is mild in manner ;) Others would have got stuck into you like a beggar eating a rare steak.

Two threads on the same topic = a no-no though.

Thank you for doing a search, we all appreciate it ;)

But what does this have to do with GT4? There's a whole forum on gaming and playstations....:dunce:

OK then... now the mod has to remove 6 useless posts...

OK we know... it's in the wrong place with the wrong info... it's gonna be sorted as soon as a Mod gets online... now leave it alone.

Sony announced that size of XDR DRAM chips to be placed in the PS3 has been cut in half, from the previously announced 512Mbit to 256Mbit which would mean 4x256 Mbits instead of 4x512 Mbits. They are still planning to use 4 XDR memory chips: two chips per memory channel making for a 64 bits Memory Controller with 32 bits per Memory Channel.

This could mean one of many possible scenarios. The first scenario is that system memory has simply been slashed in half. Another possible scenario is that memory speed has been doubled from 25.6 GB/sec to 51.2 GB/sec. A third possibility is that on-chip memory has been increased. Until more details are released about PS3 specifications, it is impossible to know which scenario, or possible other scenario, has been fulfilled.

It was also mentioned in the article that a goal of the PS3 will be to render currently pre-rendered material in real time. It was not mentioned as to what material this would include. Sony did mention how current CG movies are rendered with computers prior to playing them, so that they are not interactive with the gamer. The goal of making such movies interactive, rendered by the PS3 in real-time, is something they are confident in achieving with the PS3.

I don't think ps3 isn't coming out in 2005 (i can be wrong, don't yell at me >.<)
since PSP (PlayStation Portable) is coming out March 2005, i don't really think PS3 is gonna come out in may...

what do you all think?

It's most likely to appear at the end of 2005 or the first quarter of 2006.That IMO would be the ideal release date as Microsoft are probably release their new console around that time aswell.

Currently there has been no official statement as to what the PS3 specifications are. However Sony Computer Entertainment International filed a patent with the US patent office detailing the Cell Architecture to be used in the next generation playstation (Playstation 3). This patent has detailed the specifications of what was entitled the "preferred embodiment" which throughout the patent had heavy references to the PlayStation 3.

The specs out lined in the "preferred embodiment"- read PS3 - called for 1 trillion floating point calculations per second.Which by the way would rank it as the 45th most powerful computer in the WORLD. By todays standards I should note.

Outlined herein are the specifications for the "preferred embodiment" as detailed in the Cell Patent. Remember that these specifications have yet to be confirmed by Sony nor are they likely to be final. However the specs of the PS3 will un-doubtly be very close, if not more advanced, than the following.

I've heard from PSM Magazine they're supposed to have biotechnology in PS3? Or maybe that's a rumor and they might apply that in there future consoles like maybe PS4?
