Cross-platform play between PS3 and PS4 is 'technically possible'

Uh oh, looks like they've taken tips from Kaz for writing their press information.

Forcing you to need Music Unlimited to do something the Xbox 360 has been doing since 2005 is really poor.

Some interesting choices. The omission of MP3 playback and DLNA client seems a strange one. The only logical reason I can think of why this is, is so they focused on the gamer first aspects of the PS4 and getting those features built into the system at launch, with the media side of things coming later. PS3 never launched with DLNA, and although MP3 does seem basic, having dropped CD playback and therefore CD ripping, I can see MP3 playback as taking a back seat. It also has the benefit (for Sony) of some Music Unlimited advertising in the mean time.

I would think that most of these issues get resolved within the first year. I would guess that, in their minds, launch consumers are more interested in the latest hardware to play games on, rather than media streaming or mp3 playback. For example, I am far more interested in remote play capability than MP3 playback at this stage. And more than likely, those first day buyers have a multitude of devices that already have those features. As in TV's, Home Theatre, DVD/BD players etc. It would have to be at least 4 or 5 years since the majority of TV's didn't feature DLNA or MP3 playback.

Not that I'm saying it's ok, I would rather the PS4 have those features, or at least confirmed as an update down the road. I'm just trying to think of reasons why they would omit such features on a box which integrates into your home entertainment so neatly.

On the bright side of things, I found this tidbit interesting...

Is it possible to output all game audio through DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s 3.5mm headset jack?
Yes, you can select the Output to Headsets option to either ‘Chat Audio’ or “All Audio.”

I think that is very cool.

How hard can it be to allow your New console to play simple MP3 tracks though :indiff:

It's a letdown for me, If Wheel support is up to developers then Hope PD and SM are kind with CARS and the future GT.

I still can't believe it doesn't even support PS1 games. How hard can it be for them to include a software emulator in there? Surely even a PS2 emualtor would also be possible.

It has to be for licensing reasons rather than a technical one although I don't see how it can be an issue to someone like Sony, licensing the format from Thomson Multimedia and Fraunhofer IIS-A.

The MP3 thing is bizarre. That's standard tech for every electronic device even moderately capable of outputting audio for like the last ten years.

But surely when you can buy pocket MP3 players for sub-$10, the license can't cost much.

Even if nobody would have used it, all they've done here is open themselves up to bad press.

The mp3 thing is not about technical capabilities or mp3 licensing. All of that is peanuts.

It's about wanting to introduce a music source monopoly for the PS4 by forcing users to pay $60 a year for Sony's own "Music Unlimited" streaming service.

I'd rather call it "Music Limited".......

This sucks to such a high degree that I might boycott Sony altogether. I simply refuse to support corporate anti-customer dictatorship politics like that.

I'm shocked, no mp3, no external drive, no streaming. No external is a killer for me.

I often use my PS3 as a media player and also use external drives to copy music and video to it. Also
the music I listen to is not on this service plus I do my own music and mixes.

I'd rather think Sony is trying to close the PS4 from hackers? The music field is so vast I can't see the logic.

Unless you upload your own to this Music Unlimited? Which is silly becasue it would require an internet connection.

No external drive for expanding storage was the answer. I don't believe it was stated that external hdd's won't be recognizedunless I have missed something. But the question and answer was not 100% clear cut.

I still think that mp3's and dlna will come via an update. No other Sony product restricts you from using your mp3's in favour of music unlimited.

Maybe I jumped the gun, seems no external hard drive supported from what I read.

I wonder how screenshots for example GT5 photos can be transported? Are we being forced to use cloud service?

From http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/ps4-the-ultimate-faq-north-america/

Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on PS4?
No, this feature is not supported on PS4.

Yep, PS4 won't support external hard drives.

One of the Sony main guys said they'll look into mp3s and DLNA but really, no external drives is a bigger issue. I mean media sever came after launch on PS3 I think, stuff like that I expect to get patched in over time.

Again I can only see it being a tight deadline, and getting the system out is the priority. Security implications that they still have to figure out for these features, so its a closed ship until later I guess.

I was referring to that.

^^ specifically referring to the word expand. That question and answer doesn't say to me that the ps4 won't recognize am external hdd. Just the fact you won't be able to expand the storage of the ps4, such as to install games on.

That's just how I read it.

The conspiracy theorist inside me thinks PS4 requires a patch at launch to play blurays and DVDs because originally it didnt have bluray and DVD playback. Sony wanted to force people to stream movies on its service, similiar to how they're trying to force people to stream music instead of listening to their own collection.

Do you have a source for that? I'd be surprised if it was true as Blu Ray, like DVD, sold a lot of units for them. Now that their biggest rivals will also offer Blu Ray playback, it seems incredibly unlikely.

Hope things go well for Sony and MS. As it stands now, I think there will be many issues with these two system launches. To me, both don't seem ready for launch. Of course, I could be wrong and for the sake of the early adopters (beta testers?) I hope I am.

To me, the PS4 is more ready than the Xbox One is. Look at the list of removed features on the Xbox One and compare it to the PS4, MS are rushing.

It's only a matter of simple code implemented into Firmware. So it's a matter of update. I don't know why sony is not realizing that. Headsets from PS3 and video pilot should work without any problems with PS4. And i think in the future they will. If sony won't decide to make new Pulse Head Set especially for PS4. Sony already did Two of those. So ....

Hmmm, I'm glad I haven't preodered the ps4 after this latest bit of news. It certainly seems Sony are hoping to catch a lot of early buyers with their online services. I will give it 6 months to a year before I look into getting one, especially as the games I'm interested in have been delayed or scheduled for next year.

If mp3 playback is still a no no, is AAC on their yes list? Or does the Ps4 have no music playback function at all?

Is it safe to assume the PS4 will in fact support 3D? I don't see t in the vague spec sheet. With the latest nonsense, I can't help but to question it.

On the IGN article I read, it says that it is supported but there are currently no 3d games due for release at launch. I would link it but it's hard work with this new site on my phone.

No media server function?
What the, seriously considering cancelling my pre-order. Was hoping for that especially.
Oh well maybe down the track I'll have a look at it again.

Oh, right. I suppose that's one way to read it.

I read it as a verbose version of "Will users be able to connect an external hard drive? No."

Any external hard drive is by definition expanding the storage available to the PS4, even if it's limited in what you can save to it. Unless it's some bizarre deal where the PS4 will read from the external hard drive but not write to it. Which would be a whole other kettle of fish, and an almost completely useless feature.

Exactly, very weird decisions. Will agree with what was stated above they're just releasing the console ASAP then complaints will be patched in time.

One of the reasons I'll wait before buying the PS4.
