I use it often. I was planning on selling the PS3 to fund the PS4 when the time came. Unless this changes, I might have to keep it.

Yep, PS4 won't support external hard drives.

One of the Sony main guys said they'll look into mp3s and DLNA but really, no external drives is a bigger issue. I mean media sever came after launch on PS3 I think, stuff like that I expect to get patched in over time.

Again I can only see it being a tight deadline, and getting the system out is the priority. Security implications that they still have to figure out for these features, so its a closed ship until later I guess.
they did away with streaming media on the ps3 with the last update. This no CD reading, no MP3 and no streaming could only be so that you have to subscribe to their music service and get your movies from them. With the ps3 losing the ability to stream it seems obvious that they don't want you doing it.

I assume AAC will always be there :)
I hope so, I barely have any MP3 files anyway.

And seriously, converting music doesn't take thaaaaat long. It's really not that hard to do.

It also states you can't connect a USB device to back up your saves on IGN.
You can upload savegames to IGN?

No, I meant IGN stated that but I don't know where they got it from. It's only stated in a headline and the only reference seems to be the FAQ.

Would make things inconvenient. I don't like cloud (PS+) services that much.

It also would hardly protect anything, you'll still get the files if you know what you're doing. But maybe the average "hacker" aka I NED HELB TON'T UNDRSTAND TOOTORIALL!!! will be stopped for the beginning. Untill they start to bring CFWs...

No MP3 playback is an absolute joke.
I mean what a pathetic attempt from Sony to get people to subscribe to music unlimited.
I'm sure Sony can patch it etc but didn't they think this would annoy people.
No external HDD is silly too.

Yes, because converting MP3 to AAC is near impossible.

EDIT:
*So far they've only said MP3 is not possible. Why they specifically mentioned MP3 and not audio codecs in general...

We don't know.

Yeah very funny.
I'm not saying that,I'm saying it's a joke because the PS3 supported that straightaway and CD playback too.
Sure converting to AAC(if PS4 supports it) isn't a big deal but what about all those people who don't or won't want to do that?
It's still strange anyway and it sounds like you're justifying it or defending Sony.

Currently it's not such a big deal. It will be a big deal on the other hand as soon as we see that no audio files at all are supported.

I'm really unsure why they specifically mentioned MP3 and not just audio files in general. Seriously, if AAC and maybe WMA, ALS or even (unlikely though) FLAC, Ogg, ATRAC gets supported, I don't see the problem.

If that works then I also don't see the problem with audio CDs. Grab the sounds from the CD on a PC and put them on a USB stick. IF it will be supported of course.

We don't know.

I can understand the save games (since pretty much either goes to the HD or the cloud now).

But no mp3 file playback, that's ... ridiculous.

Well no external hard drives are supported, USB/HDD except for firmware. You won't get any music or video file on to the PS4 or play it from the external drive. I don't mind what file I have to use.

I'd like some more info regarding how connecting a usb stick/hdd works. If its like the Xbox 360 where you can play stuff from your external drive but not copy it over, that's not too bad but what is understood is at launch and the near future you can't connect an external drive.

DVD and Bluray playback need the day one patch to function apparently, out the box it doesn't work.

So you won't mind explaining how you could connect an external hard drive in a way that is useful but doesn't expand storage.
Useful? Maybe if you want to copy some movies, etc onto your PS4.

We're making quite a bunch of assumptions here, aren't we?

Quite a bunch? No.

One I'm making is possibly we won't be able to play from external storage.

Which the news that external storage is not supported I'd go with its logical conclusion.

Is the extra wording "expand your storage" throwing you off? Are you assuming that you'll be able to put some AAC files on to your USB stick and play them on the PS4 as it stands today?

"
Will I be able to watch Blu-ray movies on PS4?
Yes, you will need to download and install PS4’s day-one system software update 1.50, and then activate your Blu-ray Disc video capability with a one-time activation through the internet in order to play Blu-ray Disc films and DVD video content"

No assumption there.

Anyhow, not actually getting a PS4 or Xbox One at launch and will look into the features or lack of much later.

It make more sense than you think. It's not a joke either. You have many devices that can play CD's and music and mp3 files, your phone, tablet, mp3 player, ipod. So there is no reason for PS4 to play cd's and mp3 files. It's just stupid for such advance machine like PS4 do so backward things. More time goes by and i understand how backward compatibility is now an advantage. Sony Should never make PS2 and PS3 backward compatible. Prices of those devices would be much lower and satisfy large group of customers/ players. PS4 clearly is going right way with this.

Usually after you came back from work first thing you want to do is relax, maybe shower firs, then listen to some music, yest mp3 would be great. But instead turning on your PS4 and entire home theater system with all 5 speakers ON you just put your iphone into receiver turn it on and there you have favorite music.

And we won't, I'm not referring to this.

Where is that official news? I've read the FAQ and other stuff multiple times, but maybe my eyes are no longer the best.

The video is only based on the FAQ.

Expanding system storage is not done by using a partial mirror, theoretical backup or similar. If direct file access is not supported, copying/partial mirroring is a required and absolutely necessary step. This does as result not lead to any direct expansion of the actual storage the system is using.

Is the extra wording "expand your storage" throwing you off? Are you assuming that you'll be able to put some AAC files on to your USB stick and play them on the PS4 as it stands today?
Perhaps it's extremely bad wording on their side. I still assume based on their words, which do in no way exclude this possibility, that we'll be able to copy certain stuff onto the PS4.

There's hasn't been an absolute negation of the usage of any storage device to copy certain data onto the PS4.

Yeah I know, wasn't referring to that either.

Sure I was pretty harsh by saying "you're making quite a bunch of assumptions". In my eyes at that moment "no music or video and external HDD not connectable" was enough for saying bunch.

I actually only meant one topic, sorry for that.

I think the main reason why people aren't too happy is that, if you have a few friends over for a party and they bring music on a memory stick or hard drive, you could just plug it into the PS4 and play all the music in one playlist instead of fighting over one iPod speaker system. Plus being able to listen to your own music whilst playing a game.

As for backwards compatibility, a lot of people might have to trade in PS3s to get a PS4 rendering their PS3 games useless so they'd have to sell them. I'm sure there'll be quite a few PS3 games people will still want to play this time next year. GT6, GTA 5, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Black Ops 2 etc. Plus I'm sure there's people out there who still have PS1 and 2 games they'd play, me included and it's a little disappointing that I can't play it on the 4. It would save me wiring up an old console I have stored away somewhere just to play it.

I do see where you're coming from though.

I couldn't care less about mp3s not being played it the lossless audio that will bother me not being able to be streamed to my ps4. I'm not sure how small of files you save your music as but using lossless audio takes a bunch of storage and your phone or tablet isn't going to work for that. Any one who has a nice stereo needs massive storage for their music so by the ps4 not allowing streaming or playback from an external hdd it's going to make people go buy another media server to add to their home theater system.

And for the turning on all 5 speakers comment, you will turn on everything anyway to listen to music or watch a movie. The only difference will be instead of turning on your ps4 you will have to turn on whatever media server you had to install and place in your entertainment center to take the ps4s place.

The majority of people
I know in real life ended up using their ps3 for strictly movies and music with the streaming feature and really didn't even play games on it that much. I don't think sony realizes that the streaming feature sold consoles. When my first ps3 broke the only reason I bought another was for the streaming and blu ray. If it didn't do the streaming I would have just bought a dedicated blue ray player and not had a ps3 any longer.

By this logic, I fully expect Sony to strip all media functionality from the system because of how common those features are in tablets, phones and the like. After all, it's not as if anyone ever used them. Hell. Blu Ray is hardly a new technology either. Might as well pull that too.

More time goes by and i understand how backward compatibility is now an advantage. Sony Should never make PS2 and PS3 backward compatible. Prices of those devices would be much lower and satisfy large group of customers/ players. PS4 clearly is going right way with this.

Tell me: How much money is Sony saving by not supporting nearly any local multimedia functionality? How many more people does having significantly less functionality satisfy? Or, hell, how much money did Sony lose making the PS2 backwards compatible? You've made these arguments before, so how about some backing to them.

What does this even mean?

It's funny how some people will go to any length to defend a piece of hardware by a company they have absolutely no affiliation with.

@ussr
Do you work for Sony or Apple?
Why are you justifying why the PS4 doesn't play MP3's from day one?
I don't get it,an advanced piece of hardware should be able to play CD's ans MP3's or at least PS1 games for goodness sake.
From your opinion you make the PS4 sound as if it's too good to play MP3's and CD's,it's beneath it.:D
But anyway it looks as though Sony will patch it.
BTW not everyone has ipods,I'd like to think my PS3 as an all round entertainment system that isn't a PC but that's another thing.

I could care less about MP3's and especial backward compatibility in PS4. And don't tell me that your PS3 is all round entertainment system because it isn't You would have to use CFW on your PS3 to fully enjoy PS3 multimedia capabilities. But since you using PS3 OFW your console is handicapped. I know because i had it for some time and i missed much.

Since PS4 is next generation it should do more than just play old CD mp3 files no one really uses and backward compatibility that is unnecessary taking into this equation the fact we all already have PS3, so why do we need another one? That's the most ridicules customers demand of all time. Keep your PS3 and Buy PS4, you spend less money on new system in this case.
