What exactly makes it a mess? Most cars are designed in such a way. They start with a radical concept that slowly filters down to a useable road car, even lame models such as Astras and Mondeos have had radical design studies that eventualy get watered down. If it wasn't for designers experimenting like this we'd all still be driving around in box shaped cars with draylon trim and hard plastic interiors! So i'm interested to hear what makes you think it's a such a mess. Can you do better?
I see your point here, but I think you'll find that most designs don't start out as a totally aesthetic concept, there is at least a little concession to practicality before it is honed down (sometimes a little too much!) else it would be a slightly pointless and expensive exercise.
Personally (and of course this is just one subjective opinion of many) it looks like a bit of a mess of ideas to me too. Perhaps I need to read the whole thread but how does one see where they are going? And even if there is some radical solution to this, the visibility still looks terrible.
Covered front wheels massively restrict steering unless they are greatly recessed, which would lead to other stability issues. Yet the rear wheels aren't covered. The whole thing looks like a high school design project to me, and looks plasticy and bland in some respects, but too fussy with too many tacked on apparently arbitrary parts in others.
Perhaps I need to look into this a little more, perhaps all of these things are addressed in some way and there are reasons for each part, and some concept behind how such a car would be engineered, but without that, to me it looks like something out of a bad 90s sci-fi movie.
EDIT: Watched the first video again and it's clear that this was never intended as a realistic concept vehicle. The model and presentation is more about blurring the lines between fantasy (in the form of gaming) and reality, putting the gamer inside a virtual vehicle rather than steering it behind a screen. It's a little like
Tron in that respect, and done very well. Also I see how the steering works now. Kinda. =)
