Poll: For those players who have never driven IRL...

I have a theory that playing GT5 will either:

1). Cause you to have great respect for high HP cars, increase your understanding of vehicle control and capabilities, and give you an advantage the first time you find yourself behind the wheel of one, or

2). Cause you to inflict serious injury on countless helpless pedestrians, small pets, and probably yourself... since all powerful street cars come with race tires, have grip like an F1, and feel like a walk to the kitchen. (And WTF is "damage"?)

So which are you? :lol:

I'm going to be taking my driving test soon so I'll find out but I think it will be the latter ;). I'll probably fail for the reason "sorry I thought damage was turned off"!

I tried turning damage off, my RL is stuck on max damage. Wish I could change that.
 
Tbh I do think GT5 can help a little bit with IRL driving (if you use a wheel)

I've had my permit for 4 or 5 months and still pretty green with driving, but i was doing donuts in my dads truck the other day and it feels just like drifting in gt5. I was able to feather the gas and countersteer just like i do in GT5 and it felt pretty accurate. So yes i think it can help a little bit IRL (if you come into a situation were you lose traction or the like)
 
I feel driving game's have helped me understand car control. Tho i race something irl with 4 wheels (Quads) There similar in some aspects. I don't think any game can give a true representation of all the feelings you get IRL if your car starts sliding or whatever.. I do think tho it helps with muscle memory and knowing what to do in the situation.
 
most likely #2. when ever i step in a car i always feel like it is GT5. just sitting in the passenger seat i'm picturing things that i would i see in GT5. :drool:
my first and so far only time driving a car i went a little overboard.. :indiff: i was accelerating and steering like a maniac :guilty: needless to say, i don't think my parents want me to get my permit soon... it doesn't seem like they trust me with a car yet :nervous::nervous:
 
I didn't have a wheel when I first started my driving lesson, I was still able to pass every test on the first go, after having learnt how to drive, I found the transition from DS3 to wheel rather easy.

I haven't actually DONE this yet, but I notice the urge being there. Which is weird, because I play games to DE-stress!

I have had my license for 11 years now and i remember back when i used to play Grand Theft Auto a lot of PS2, i would instinctively brake and look around when i saw a cop car while driving in real life.

I am insane at driving in a game, and frankly dont care (ofc against actual people ill race fair but I stilll wanna win) Ill thrash the crap outta my car.

IRL Im a massive pussy, unless ive been high speed cruising then I get all jumpy in the 30mph zones.

I'm just waiting for some kid who thinks he is the driving god to pass his test and then first time driving solo to end up in twisted wreck because he thinks he can drive at speed or just drift round that corner.
 
Well, I drove in real life not too long after starting sim racing (Papyrus' Indy Car Racing) - where I was taught the hard lessons of being smooth with all the controls...
Needless to say, I was more than cautious the first time out, aged 8 (on a deserted airfield), positively timid, even. Not much has changed since then, there're some 🤬 lunatics / idiots out there :eek:

Start 'em young, I say - it worked for me... :lol:

Driving IRL compared to GT5 is a huge difference.

EDIT: But, to those who are taking their driving test in the future, I'd like to say keep cool, relaxed, and listen to your instructor. You should do great. I've seen a guy fail on the spot for not signaling before pulling out into the street.

17, first real drive was a few weeks ago (REALLY LATE to get my license and the like)

was playing gtpsp about an hour before.

walked into the maxima with my dad, and drove around to my friends place (15 min. drive?)

besides my dad scaring me ****less, i found gt5 taught me a decent bit about pedal control and clean passes and such. but the wheel handling? oh HELL NO. xD

but thankfully, gt5 taught me to be a cleaner driver (well, as well as a racing SIMULATOR can).

and sorry about the mess of up there, i can hardly write atm xD
 
I think GT5 is more helpful to people that know how to drive a car...then hop into GT5 to teach themselves how to drive a little faster by using a racing line etc, then properly apply that to their real car.

Going straight from video game to real car will take a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it GT teaches you enough about the racing line to be useful in real life.

Honestly GT5 has given me great respect for powerful cars. I had the Opportunity to drive a C6 ZO6. . . At the time I was only 19. . . You're average American 19yo guy would hop in before you could blink and just as quickly wrap the car around a tree, even if you were in the Mohave. I've learned how much work and repsct a higher HP car requires to drive at a decent pace. personally I look at it realistcally, and even with playing GT since GT2 and racing GT5 with the hel, I'd say I'm still not confident in my skills to drive a real higher HP car. Even though the Viper, Speed 12 and CLK-GTR are one's I love to drive, not to mention twitchy as all hell.

If your theory is correct that explains a lot. when I was younger I wouldv're been a danger to anyone and everyone. Now, I use GT as a baseline for basic car control skill at race speed. (race Speed for say a stock Miata). The skills I've learned though have indeed saved me though.

I would change 2 to "causing you to think your a race driver when your not and getting into accidents." I think you were playing GTA and not GT when you wrote that part.
 
No matter how good you do in GT5, GT5 still doesn't fully replicate real life. For one, 95% of people drive on racing softs, which are not street legal, so you will always be using inferior tires (and my a great margin) in real life. Second, people bump and grind all the time, only without significant consequence, and the real life isn;t as forgiving.

Controlling a vehicle in real life at the posted speed limits is easy (in dry conditions). Roads are designed for cars and vehicles to travel at those speeds. However, the main challenge of driving is the traffic. I live in a city so there is always cars moving on the freeways and roads. It's not just your own driving that you have to consider, but also the other drivers around you. If you have to aware of the cars around and at the same time you have to be alert. There are always people who aren't paying attention when changing lanes, there are pedestrians and children in residential areas, and there are other drivers who are just aggressive. You can always argue afterwards that you had the right of way, but realistically the goal is to avoid collisions.

GT5 puts you inside the driver's seat of a race car driver. It's more challenging to control the vehicles effectively but at the same time you don't have to worry about others or your own safety.

Realistically, it's a comparison of two drastically different things. In real life, a good driver is someone who keeps themselves and others safe. If you play a game and decide to attempt to be wreckless, then you're an idiot.
 
I started driving last September with little experience besides GT. I honestly think it helped me know the way car's handle, and helped me with concepts like understeer. One thing I find though, is when I was driving a few weeks ago, I tried to press the "look back" button on my steering wheel in the car when I was going to glance at the rear view mirror :p


Although to be frank, GT has probably given me a fairly decent foundation to work from if I were to try race driving, but it doesn't help a ton with driving on public roads.
 
The thing with GT is most of the driving you do is between 70 MPH and 120 MPH, in real life driving, you only go above 60 MPH on high ways, and even then its just straight driving mostly. Slow speed driving is fairly different than high speed driving.
 
It does not matter what you vote. It does not matter whether you have driven IRL or not. Nothing prepares you for the fhe first time you get to drive a real performance car.

The first time I floored the throttle in a TVR I nearly cr@pped myself :crazy::nervous::sick: and that was on a straight, dry road.
 
When I drive on the road, I'll drive safely.
But when I race, I'll race.
The cost of fuel has gone up so conservative driving is necessary.
 
I do believe Gran turismo 5 will hone your skills at it finest without such expense. However overlooking the limit of the game itself can cause bad habits to yourself in the way you drive or worse can spread a like a disease on your daily public driving. So i advised, people don't apply psychologically the game itself to your daily driving basis as it may cause death or injury.
