In 1971 Herb Adams entered his wife's 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO in the prestigious Trans Am Championship - race goers were shocked to see the huge old car start from the back of the grid and work its way through the field, at a rain lashed Lime Rock, to second place before retiring with head gasket problems. This was no backyard special - Adams was a Senior General Motors Engineer who worked on the Pontiac Super Duty Programme. Together with a few other GM employees they put the car together in their spare time as a hobby and persuaded the great Bob Tullius to drive. It featured a 389 motor destroked to 303 cubic inches and a special solid rear axle with a small amount of negative camber. The weak link proved to be the motor as the car retired from several races with engine trouble, but it did score 3 top 5 finishes in the 1971 season. The car still exists and was restored to original, as raced condition - it was a crowd pleaser then and I'm sure it would be now if PD added it to the game.
